Can't wait to come back!
My wife and I recently visited Secrets for our winter break. This was our 4th year and the experience was every bit as good as previous visits. The physical property has been well maintained – even improved (ie. workout room), and the seven or so restaurants have nicely evolved their menus. Most important though are the staff at Secrets. At each point of contact they are focused on the guest experience. I realize that all-inclusive resorts can, over time, put a strain on the local human resources however the staff at Secrets step up year after year. And the time spent on training was also obvious. Note: special thanks to Ileana Ponce for making our check-in / room location memorable. My only request would be for more local (craft?) beer choices... perhaps next year!
2nd trip here. not disapointed
Very rarely do we travel to the same resort twice, but our initial trip to Secrets Huatulco was really good so we tried it again 6 years later. The area has become more popular it seems. In fact the flight was full and so were the buses to the resort. Check in was done in the theater because there were too many folks for the lobby. Check in was faster than I expected for so many people and since we had to wait at the airport for a bus, our room was ready by the time we got checked in. Our luggage had already been brought to our room which was a nice touch. The resort takes a bit of figuring out. There are 6 buildings arranged in 3 layers on a hillside. A bank of elevators serves the buildings, but it is not immediately apparent when to get off. For example for room 6200 you would get off on the 2nd floor, not the 6th. Secrets advertises that all the rooms are ocean view. Well they all FACE the ocean as opposed to a courtyard or parking lot, but many of the rooms in the lower level buildings do not really have an ocean view. Ours had a view of the pool and the backside of many lounger chairs. Through a palm tree one could see a tiny sliver of ocean. This was disappointing because on our previous visit we were in a room high on the hill with a great ocean view. I had brought binoculars to look for whales and such. Never took em out of the suitcase. One would think a repeat guest would get a better room the second time around. The lower level room WAS more convenient for access to the pool and beach. we could walk down the hall and access the beach without using the elevator at all. The room was fairly large and comfortable. The air conditioner worked well and there was a good ceiling fan although it was off center to the bed. A sliding door opened out onto a small balcony, but during the day it was really too hot to go out there. The bathroom was somewhat odd with a glass door to the toilet. A second door surrounding a huge tub could open toward the bed but I am not sure why. The shower had good pressure except there was no vent fan. The bed was large and comfortable with clean linens and plenty of pillows each day. Maid service was excellent. In addition to daily cleaning there was a turn down service where they brought more towels and such. Nice. Overall the resort was pretty quiet at night. Our building was far from the bars and restaurants so the only noise we heard was the guy next door slamming the door every morning to go out and reserve poolside loungers at 545 each morning. The staff members were all extremely polite and friendly. Several staff members tried to enroll us in the secret unlimited vacation club, but they were not hard sell and left us alone when we indicated we were not interested. There were quite a few bars around the resort. Well placed so it was not too far from any place. Our favorite was the sky bar because of the view. Bartenders were very polite and accommodating. Booze was very high quality. Top shelf brands were included. There was some sort of entertainment each night. Some were shows, some were games and constests, and some were live music. The shows were excellent, but seemed a bit late at 2145 for some folks. The al la carte restaurants were quite good. The favorite was the Hibachi Asian called Spice. That was the only one requiring reservations. Others were walk in and we were almost always able to get a table. There was usually a buffet somewhere as well for those who didn’t want to put on long pants and a collared shirt (required for men). The pools were very clean and large, but not very deep. Only about 3-4 feet. There were restrooms conveniently located on either edge of the pool which was a very smart move. There were volleyball games and water aerobics daily. The beach was somewhat small and one could walk end to end in like 10 minutes. The beach was somewhat coarse sand and it tended to drop off very quickly. Non powered watersports were available on the beach. I was always bugging Alejandro, Victor, and Francisco to take out a kayak or Hobie Cat each day! Snorkel equipment could be checked out too, but since I was diving I didn’t use it. A word on scuba diving here. If you are here for a week and want to see what it is like, go for it. Huatulco dive Center is professional and safe. But it really isn’t a world class dive destination like Cozumel or Belize. In Huatulco in January, the weather is cool in the 70s in the morning but quickly gets quite warm during day and stays warm and somewhat humid at night. At no time during the week did we EVER feel any animosity or ANY threat to our safety. There was no hint at all of any problem with drinks or food (except for the fact that they had too many calories). Check out was quick and easy. Overall Secrets Huatulco was a high end resort with great service. The food is very good and the whole place is clean and pleasant. The staff was excellent. Overall a fun week and maybe I will return in a few years.
I really wanted to love this place, after 17 years of wanting to stay at a Secrets. This was our 11th all-inclusive. I'd say it ranks 5 or 6th. The Hualtulco area is beautiful, much quieter and cleaner than other Mexico areas. The resort is clean, but needs some major updating to be 5 stars. I was expecting great food based on reviews but we did not have this experience. Usually the restaurants are good, but these were far from great. All on all we still had a nice trip, but the resort is just "fine". Definitely did not meet our expectations of what a Secrets would be like.
Can't beat the beauty. It is sunny all the time. The hotels rooms all face the ocean. The staff are humble and friendly, work very hard and always aim to please. The food is fresh and always displayed beautifully. My only negative reaction in two weeks is there's not a change in variety of fruits or nuts. We fell in love with Laura at the front desk, Allan Cruz Rosado and Patricia at Castaways, Ivonne at Oceana and Luis, market cafe. Denise, water aerobics, Alejandra, Tamarind... Abraham with UVC took excellent care of us throughout. The beach sand is very course.
Very fun and relaxing family vacation
We went on this trip as a family but everyone is over 24 and it was very fun and relaxing. The weather was awesome every day sunny and mid to upper 80's. Being in or near the pool is a must. The hotel was in good shape and they were always cleaning something but never bothering or making lots of noise while working. The food for an All-Inclusive was above average and enough choices to satisfy everyone. The drinks were good and they had pretty much all types and brands available. The wait staff by the pool (Leo, Daniel and Jose just to name a few) were very nice and personable and never would just disappear. I would definitely recommend the Hibachi restaurant as we ate there a couple of times and it was very good. You can reserve a table by the chef and watch the show as they cook and it is worth all of it. Since it is an all adult resort it is nice not to have children running around and it makes it very relaxing. Overall I would recommend it and we will return in the future.
