Nice resort, great food, needs a little updating
Secrets Huatulco is located in a secluded area, on a very clean beach with dark, coarse sand, and rough waters. If you walk all the way to the left of the beach the water becomes a lot more calm and the sand is softer. Overall we were told the hotel is newer, but it looks like it needs some updates or perhaps a remodel. There was cracks in walls and the drywall on the ceiling in the hallway leading up to our room started falling down after one day of rain. The lobby lacks any kind of air conditioning or any fans for that matter so it is basically a sweat storm. Elevators that take you up to your building and restaurants didn’t all have working AC and they all had glass doors which provide great views of the ocean, but were extremely dirty. We tried all the restaurants available and found the food to be excellent in French, Asian, Italian and most spectacular was the seafood restaurant but unfortunately was only open once during our seven night stay. The buffet was lacking selection in my option as compared to other Amstar resorts (Secrets the vine and Breathless), but overall the food was good. There was a very kind man working at the buffet named Otilio who always provided exceptional service during our breakfast. The Barefoot Grill and Castaways restaurant were excellent for lunch. There are two kittens living in the shrubs located directly in front of Castaways, they would come out from time to time and we would leave them some food. If you will be eating at Castaways please leave some food for them by the shrubs, they are adorable! We purchased a couples hydrotherapy session from Candy who was very friendly and frequently interacted with the guests at the resort. We also visited the resort’s gym which was small but had very scenic views of the beach. Overall, this resort is not as touristy as other resorts. Large number of the guests there during our stay were visiting from other parts of Mexico. We did encounter an issue with the people at the reception being able to break larger bills. One girl turned us away twice due to the smallest imperfections in two different one hundred dollar bills which we took out from a bank right before coming to Huatulco. We have traveled to many different countries and this is the first time we had an issue with the hotel or resort being able to exchange larger bills into smaller. We had no issues with getting change when we visited downtown Huatulco and also with the Apple vacations representative at the resort. If you are planning on visiting this resort it’s probably best to bring smaller bills with you or have bills straight from the printer (haha).
First all-inclusive resort experience
Secrets Huatulco did not disappoint! The beach is not the best and the water is rough, the food is average and could have some better desserts, but what made the trip for me (a younger person not traveling as a couple) was the activities team. Fransico, Alejandro, Fernando, and Victor were all great, and Agustin was awesome-super fun and full of energy. All of them did a great job of making sure we had a good time!
Everything was great. Hotel is located on the hill so you can see ocean and beach from the top. Beach is nice but waves are big, I’m not sure if it is always like that, but in order to swim in the ocean we had to walk to the side of the bay, like 10 min. Pools are not busy, enough space for everyone. The best breakfast was in Castaway, food was amazing, hostess Laura Lopez was super friendly and helpful. The best restaurant was definitely French. Buffets are closed for diner so you go to any of 3-4 restaurants, the good thing is , you don’t have to make any reservations in advance and if you are really hungry you can go to more than one restaurant at the same night. We really loved this place and will definitely be back.
We have been to many all inclusive resorts. We have just completed our third stay at Secrets Huatulco. We have loved this resort from the first time we stayed and it gets better every time. The service was superb only surpassed by the beautiful environment. We were always greeted with a warm smile and a hello. Often we were greeted by name. We were made to feel as if all of the hard work to make us happy and comfortable was effortless. We were always sincerely told “it’s a pleasure”. The food and beverage service is excellent. The food is delicious and served hot and fresh. Special requests were accommodated as much as possible. There was a woman we became friendly with while there and she was amazed at the extent that the staff wanted to accommodate her dietary restrictions. There was a huge Mexican party on the plaza with most everything you could imagine. The mole chicken was outstanding as was everything else. The activities personal Alejandro and Francisco ensured that we had fun from morning until night. From dancing with us to the music at night and coordinating our afternoon pool volleyball games. The made us laugh and everything enjoyable. We can not include all of the people that went above and beyond to make our days fabulous. We would like to send a special thanks to a few: Katy, for always keeping our room clean and fresh. Miguel, Ivonne, Laura, Edgar and Nemorio always greeted us by name. Willie the “beekeeper” from Market Cafe. He made a special dish for us that was outstanding. He shared his hobby of beekeeping. He brought in an encased honeycomb dripping with the freshest delicious honey to use on our pancakes and breads. He educated us on the hobby and we throughly enjoyed it. Maredonio and Freddie in the lobby bar were always busy and still made special drinks for us. Elvira (Reservations) and Rolando (Concierge) made our stay a home away from home only better. We can not thank you both enough. The leadership the manager of this resort cultivates is outstanding. We are truly impressed by the entire staff to the extent that in our bragging to a friend of how wonderful things were. They have now booked Dreams with their daughter for later this month. They have done so because both properties are managed by the same leader. Thank you Ms. Angon! We will see you soon! Sue and Dave E from Chicago
First Secrets Visit
Overall we had a great time and the hotel is awesome. The staff is friendly and the very responsive to your needs. The pool is much larger than most other resorts and the staff really tries to get you involved in activities, but they are not pushy. We must have went during slow season (May) as several of the restaurants were closed for dinner during the week leaving options limited. And their main café was only open during breakfast and lunch. Other resorts offer their main café as a dinner option. Overall a great place to go for couples if you want to get away from it all.
