    Secrets Huatulco

The weather and the views are outstanding. Expect a 3.5 star experience...definitely not a 5 star resort. On check-in the Vacation Club reps are relentless...and do not identify themselves readily...so be prepared...awful way to start a vacation dealing with these idiots...they beg and beg and beg. Our swim out came with preferred club but I would not recommend anyone buying it separately. The preferred lounge is gross, can't imagine eating any of the food left out there. Often it's unattended so anybody can walk in and take what they want. One time I went in for a glass of wine and they didn't even have wine glasses...so they poured it into a large tumbler...how's that for 5 star class. The mixed drinks are made with artificial sweeteners, since I don't typically have that I did not enjoy the drinks. I'd suggest going into town and buying your own beer...unless you enjoy Amstel Ultra. Apparently anyone can go to Castaways for breakfast...not just preferred. Beautiful views and far better food than the buffet. A la carte's were fine...just check the Mexican menu before you go...I'm not a fan of beef tongue, beef head, or crickets but you may be. The resort is quite "sterile" with little decor and poor lighting. Swim outs are accessible from either end so you have people walking by your room...no steps in front of the room, also they are not infinity so bird poop does build up in the water which is not always circulated. We loved the location but understand that this is not really a Secrets experience...think 5 star in Cuba.

    Lacks Consistency!

Our room was clean and housekeeping was good. Turndown service was missed numerous times and even when we spoke to the concierge they stated it was because the red light was on; the light was not on! As preferred club guests, we went for breakfast at castaways on our first morning, it was terrible. My husband was served raw eggs, so we stuck with marketplace for breakfast the rest of the week. In speaking with other guests that were not preferred club, they received better service than we did! For example, turndown service handful of pillow mints and flower petals on bed. Preferred club bar was supposed to have top shelf alcohol, but in reality you could get it at almost every bar. Therefore, I do not know exactly what the additional cost was for! Club space is very small too. Overall our stay was okay. Our week was made brighter after we met Isai (bar tender at preferred club and sky bar). He remembered us by name, greeted us each time he saw us even if it was passing in a hallway. Also want to acknowledge Daniel, Josue, and Mario servers (in Marketplace) and Astrid (hostess in Marketplace), they were all warm and welcoming; Daniel especially. Other exceptional staff were Mardonio bar tender (Rendezvous bar) and Ismael bar tender (sky bar). Food at Ocean and the Teppanyaki experience was superb! The fire show and International show were fabulous!

    A fun March Break

This was my second visit to this Secrets, my first was 2017, and my third visit to Huatulco, I stayed at Dreams last Christmas. I travelled with my three girlfriends this time and I think we were the only non-couple at the resort (which didn’t matter to us). Pros: Food was surprisingly excellent, loved Castaways for lunch, but we ate at all the restaurants and never had a disappointing meal…and no tummy issues! I was happy to be able to get beer in a can—even though it’s Amstel Ultra. The service was top notch. We were happy with all of the staff—friendly and efficient!! Loved the pool yoga and aerobics. Loved the pickleball. Shout out to Ximena—you got us in the Perfect Couple game at night and it was a riot!😜 The beach and views are unmatched. I usually don’t like to spend time at a spa when I could be on a beach instead but I was getting fried in the sun so I did a spa that afternoon—might have been the best spa experience I have ever had!! And they offer all kinds of deals so it was a 2.5 hour experience for $105 USD—cheap!! We took a cab to Playa Entrega and Playa Maguey to go snorkelling as it was rough and cloudy at the resort. The snorkelling was amazing—turtles, manta rays, and thousands of fish. The lunch at Las Hamancas on Playa Maguey was phenomenal and cheap!! We also went into La Crucecita one evening and had a great time shopping and eating and drinking at La Crema and Tequila Taberna. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Cons: The rooms are run down, but comfortable and clean, and we were only in them to sleep. The chair game is real. But I’m an early bird so it didn’t matter to me. The pool is showing its age, but perfect temperature.

Poor greeting and day 1 impression

Poor arrival. No welcome drink. Food is below average so far. Only thing is beautiful property so far. Sad we booked here. Missing items in room. Had to request an additional house robe after my buddy was done showering. Shocked , I know it’s. Low grade secrets but this has been even worse than we expected. Feeling home sick 😔

Amazing Friendly Staff But Not a 5 Star Resort

This was our first visit to beautiful Huatulco and third stay at a Secrets Resort. We booked a 2-week trip through West Jet Vacations -Deal of the Day Room Feb 19 to March 5. The resort was secluded being the only one in the Conejos Bay. All 6 of the three-story buildings with rooms faced the ocean. Many of the 1st floor rooms had swim outs or jacuzzi, while the 2nd & 3rd floors had better ocean views. Our King room had a beautiful ocean view from the 2nd floor of Building 1. Yessica, our maid, always did an excellent job cleaning our room. She was wonderful and often left us flower petals at the sink area and bed. All the staff at this resort were the most friendly, genuine and extremely hard working we have ever met in Mexico. I can understand why so many guests we met had been returning every year. It is an older crowd and mostly Canadian with direct flights from several Canadian cities. We had dinner at all the a-la-carte restaurants at least twice. At the Japanese, Steakhouse, French, Mexican and Seafood we had good to very good meals and excellent service. However, the Italian Restaurant was sub-par with tasteless entrees, poorly cooked pasta, and no air conditioning both nights we went there. We did book one evening at the Dreams resort through the concierge and our dinner at Portofino (Italian) was excellent. The cab fare was around 100 pesos each way, but confirm the price with the driver upfront. For lunch we usually went up to the Steakhouse, which had a gorgeous ocean view, for calamari, grilled fish taco or a grilled fish of the day entrée. A few times we enjoyed the freshly baked wood fired pizza down by the pool. I only ate lunch once at the Market Café, a few bites of a partly uncooked hamburger, and was violently ill for 24 hours followed by 5 days of being unwell. We ordered lunch once through room service using the Hyatt App which I highly recommend installing. The App was very handy to see the daily activities, restaurant info and menus, as well as housekeeping requests or extra water bottles if you missed the restock. We used it often when I was unwell for housekeeping requests and water. For breakfast we preferred the quieter Mexican Restaurant, although less options than Market Café buffet, they had a less busy omelet station. Every morning, we were greeted with friendly service by Carmen who knew our routine of a mimosa and a cappuccino. Our West Jet Rep, Deva with Maxi Travel, was a great guy and very helpful with excursion info and hotel guidance. He was available in the lobby every day to book tours and I highly recommend the city tour, waterfalls and snorkeling cruises. As well he can even arrange for a customized private tour for your small group. My husband really enjoyed tennis every morning with Alejandro and Daniel. They were awesome for tennis and other activities! I enjoyed the free 30-minute spa service, called Take A Breath, which was offered once a week at the spa. Although Secrets offered a lot of daily activities, we were extremely disappointed that during our entire two week stay there was a black flag for all ocean activities due to a crocodile sighting in our bay. We could not snorkel, sail, kayak or paddleboard. Unfortunately, even after speaking to the concierge a few times, there was nothing they could offer such as moving the equipment to Dreams for use by Secrets guests. Overall Secrets Huatulco could use some improvements as it is not what we expected for a Secrets 5 star. It was maintained but in need of some décor updates and some colour in the French, Seafood and Italian restaurants. Stark white walls with no ambiance. Some dishes needed more flavour and better presentation. In most restaurants, visibly dirty tablecloths were not changed between seating's. Drinks were average, they need to make a better margarita and mojito. My husband’s Micheladas and banana daquiris were hit or miss depending on the bartender. Several areas of the pool were also in need of repair with missing tiles. More shade in the pool and at the lounge chairs would be great as it was 30-33 C when we were there Feb/March. Getting a lounge chair with shade at the pool was impossible due to people reserving them all day with a towel and a random book. I really wish they would resolve that issue as it seems to be a common complaint. In all we would consider returning if price was reasonable as the staff were 5 star.
