Four Star Resort with Five Star Service
We have been to seven Secrets/Breathless resorts in the Cancun area and Jamaica as well as many other five star adult resorts, therefore, this review is noting our opinion of pros and cons relative to our personal previous experiences. Capri was nice but because of it's age and need to be renovated as well as lesser dining options, it is a different class compared to other Secrets. We would rate it as a solid four star resort that excels primarily because of their staff and excellent service. PROS :We selected Secrets Capri primarily since it was significantly lesser priced than the Secrets at Maroma, Akumal, The Vine, Playa Mujeres and Breathless (also an adult AM Resort). - 30 minutes from the airport - we use Canada Transfers - very reliable, reasonable and always private - Secrets always recommend Amstar which is one of their affiliates and much more expensive. - Very small campus, short walk to everything, easy to meet new people and then continue to run into them again. - Large pool with a quiet side and a slightly heated active side with a swim up bar. Water felt cold when first getting in but very comfortable once you get used to it. Contrary to many reviews about the condition of the pool, there was no sign of any missing pool tiles. We also did not witness nor hear of anyone slipping or falling on slippery surfaces. -Lots of pool loungers available without playing the early morning reserving game - Zero seaweed on the beach the entire time we were there. - Beach and pool servers came around every 5 to 10 minutes. - As many have said, most of the staff are phenomenal - Raul at check in was especially helpful for a reservation problem created by our travel company. - Visually, very well maintained (beautifully decorated for Christmas). For a 16 year old resort that has yet to experience any significant refurbishment, our room was comfortable with good plumbing, ice cold A/C and a comfortable bed with quality linens. - All Playa del Carmen weather forecasts prior to our trip indicated some rain every day, yet we only had a 30 minute shower one evening during our seven night stay. Do not fear the weather forecasts before travelling. CONS: - You must say no to the 90 minute vacation club presentation offered at check in unless you are a glutton for punishment and are prepared to be held captive for a minimum of 3 hours. You are taken to the upscale Secrets Maroma resort (15 minutes away) and progressively passed to different sales closers that don't take NO for an answer. The starting point for the pitch in the Capri lobby after checking in is a $200 resort credit booklet with $10 coupons for bottles of wine that start at $65, $20 off a $70 beach cabana rentals, $40 off a $195 massage (you can get a 50 minute massage on the beach for $50). The concierge will still give you the booklet if you refuse the presentation. If they don't nab you at check in, they will phone your room to lure you down to the concierge desk to sign that you have received your resort credits. -of course some people may be curious and wealthy enough to join the vacation club and will want to attend the presentation. - There are about 25 no charge palapas on the beach that are usually all reserved by early risers before 7 AM. - Some reviews we read before travelling had reported a musty smell at Capri - we were concerned since we experienced this at Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. That was so bad that when we returned home, we were unable to wash the smell out of our clothing. We were somewhat pleased upon arrival to Secrets Capri that the lobby smelled good. Our room initially smelled of cleaning bleach, but we brought scented candles, deodorizer spray and the room had incense sticks to burn. That seemed to do the trick. - The lower lobby when you enter from the pool area had a huge turtle pond that had a distinct stink to it. They should eliminate this feature. Often upon entering from the pool area it would initially smell great since they perfumed that space regularly, but eventually you would smell what they were trying to mask. - After arriving home and unpacking, all of our clothes had a musty smell (my spouse has a good nose). Fortunately the smell came out with laundering.-Some people will argue that musty smell is to be expected in a tropical climate, but this is only the second of approximately 15 tropical five star resorts that we have experienced that have had this problem.- possibly because the rooms do not have ceiling fans to circulate the air. - Our room was on the top floor above the buffet restaurant. On a few evenings we were inclined to not use our balcony since a coatimundi (like a Mexican version of a raccoon) would walk the railings. One of them left a "present" on our balcony as well as the one next door. I believe some of the guests would leave food out for them. - This resort is not suitable for people with mobility issues. No access to Oceana restaurant (about 15 stairs), Fewer, but still stairs for Seaside Grill. Also there's about 20 stairs from the pool area up to the main lobby. -Large TV but very frustrating to flip through the channels to find English speaking shows. The channel numbering was unusual. RESTAURANTS: - A positive for some and a negative for others is that the only restaurants that have a dress code are Himitsu and Portofino If you prefer to dine in a T-shirt, shorts, ball cap and flip flops this may be your kind of resort. - Portofino is their signature restaurant which we ate at three times. Our final evening the restaurant Manager, Irais set us up with a special table. She is a real credit to the resort with her welcoming smile and bubbly personality. Raul was our excellent waiter and Chef Genaro helped deliver our delicious and beautifully presented entree of mini lobster tails that were an added special that evening. - Be on guard at the Cactus Gril at either breakfast or lunch, the blackbirds are stalking your food for a chance to steal something from your plate. - We had the good fortune to enjoy dinner one night at Secrets Maroma's French restaurant. This was fantastic and a subtle reminder why it costs so much more to stay at that incredible resort. - Breakfast and lunch at the Riviera buffet restaurant were not as extensive as most other Secrets but more than adequate. - Most dinners were just OK. -Fewer restaurants than other Secrets resorts - most of them also have an evening Mexican restaurant called El Patio and a French restaurant called Bordeaux. Capri tries to compensate for this by having three outdoor buffet dinner shows per week and by having access to dinner buffets in the Riviera restaurant the other four days of the week. ENTERTAINMENT: The current weekly cycle of evening entertainment.(obviously this may change). Monday - Il Divo Tribute show outside by the pool - just OK if you like operatic music - they promote private small tables for the buffet dinner show if you buy a bottle of wine. If not, you sit at larger tables but you get the same visual experience. Later in the theater an Argentinian Gaucho performs with some pretty funny comedy. Tuesday - Country show in the disco/sports bar. Wednesday - Beatles tribute dinner show - again by the pool. Thursday - Queen tribute in the theater - don't miss this one. Friday - Mexican dinner show in the pool area followed by Elements (a unique light show) n the theater Saturday - Elvis tribute in the theater Sunday - Newlywed Game in the Theater followed by Jersey Boys tribute in the disco. Overall, there were many more positives than negatives, especially meeting new people and the efforts of the hardworking staff. For the price point and being at an adults only compact resort with premium drinks, great service and not having to make restaurant reservations (except Teppanyaki at Himitsu) we would consider returning as long as we are able to get the musty smell out of our clothes when we return home.
My latest visit to Secrets Capri
I find this resort perfect for guests who are more comfortable with a smaller , more intimate resort. Secrets Capri is the one for you. This boutique resort has it all with just a few steps. The food, service and entertainment variety are sure to please guests of all ages. I always enjoy my stay there .
One great resort
The best small, all inclusive, adults only resort we have visited. The bars, restaurants and pools are all located for easy access. The staff are very friendly and go above their individual positions.
Our honeymoon was amazing at Secrets Capri! They had great food selections, plenty of activities, amazing staff, and wonderful pool and beach. We had the one bedroom honeymoon suite that was ocean side... did not disappoint!!
SUPERB ANNIVERSARY HOLIDAY
Having visited another lovely hotel in Mexico my wife and I decided to book our Golden Wedding holiday at the Secrets Capri Riviera. As our previous holidays had been great we wondered how this would compare.Well we needn’t have worried as the Secrets Capri Riviera was everything we wanted. So where do I begin? Hotel - the hotel is spotlessly clean and the room (we had an ocean view room) was excellent and spacious with lovely toiletries, sun cream and mosquito repellent(we never needed it) replenished at regular intervals. Pool - the pool is excellent with an abundance of sun beds (I think there were more beds than guests). The pool service was unbelievable with friendly pool staff always available and obliging with a vast array of drinks. Staff - there were so many staff to meet all our needs and always with a friendly smile. Whilst it might be unfair to single people out, I must mention a few. First there was our concierge Andres who went out of his way to make our holiday so special. This even included decorating our room for Las Pasados (look it up)which he had told us about. Then there was Jasmin for organising our special dinner, Annyelli who was so helpful,Juan (Juanito)in the Rendezvous Bar whose beaming smile which could light up Cancun. Finally thank you to Karen in La Riviera who,as well as greeting us most mornings, helped me with my Spanish(with a little laugh when I got it wrong) Entertainment - the shows (inside and round the pool) were really first class and special thanks to Yoshi and Rodrigo and the entire entertainment team. So overall this was one of the best holidays we have had and we certainly won’t hesitate to return as soon as we can.
