I went there for my honeymoon for 11 nights and I was sure I would get board but that was not the case:) Amazing place !!! Such lovely people and kind .. the food was great, a lot of variety.. I really enjoyed it, I would definitely go back 💗
Don’t keep this secret — Secrets is wonderful!
This was, by far, the best resort we’ve ever visited! Phenomenal staff, delicious food, good drinks, in a gorgeous location! We snorkeled, swam (including to the swim up bar), ate, drank, and enjoyed all of the entertainment activities. To quote the staff, everything was excellente!
What a lovely property and almost every person we encountered seems to really care about providing excellent service. The pool service and waiters are outstanding! Ivan always made sure we had chairs and an umbrella, Felipe kept the drinks full!!! I do think they should start heating the pool in November, a tad chilly but refreshing!
Simply the best
My wife and I have traveled for twenty some years and have become fans of Secrets resorts . This one could be the best of all we've been to. Yes it takes a little over one hour to get there but well worth it. It is beautiful and tropical with a beautiful beach with great snorkeling and some of the best service around. Hats off to Louis the nicest and hardest working beach waiter in all of Mexico. Agustin in the preferred club lounge also stood out. Had no wait getting in any restaurants all week and excellent meals and service in all of them with the Bordeaux our favorite. Been home for two weeks and still can't stop thinking about it and would go back at the drop of a hat.
Great concept, made better by genuinely friendly & helpful staff
This was our second stay at a Secrets resort (previous was Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun) and we were excited and apprehensive at the same time. Maroma Beach was a brilliant resort and is the dream for those who like body-boarding in the waves, kite-surfing and feeling powder sand in your toes. (Having lived in Bermuda, I know a good beach when I see one). We hoped that Akumal could offer the same experience. We were also nervous as it was Thanksgiving week; would it be too busy and “Oh My God!” loud? We had chosen a connecting flight via Miami, so didn’t arrive at the resort until 8pm, after an 18-hour journey. Great welcome, beautiful atmosphere, super rooms; but no hot water. OK, we’ve probably arrived just after guests had used it all – that happens. We were SO ready for a meal and to start the entertainment, it really didn’t matter. Dinner in the Seaside Grill, wonderful staff, decent steaks, eyes propped open on sticks, we finally hit the sack at 4am body-clock time (and the beds are GREAT). Woke early due to the time-change, but still no hot water – so called for help, which arrived within 5 minutes and we sheepishly found the bath was just about OK and probably needed to run the water for longer than we had done in the basins and shower – but it still wasn’t right. The shower was tepid at best. Eventually, and despite more visits from maintenance, we suggested that management come and join us in the shower. Patience and persistence finally won and the following day we were moved to a new room. It turned out to be an upgrade, (which I wasn’t after: I still just wanted a hot shower) and shared a lovely discrete pool with other ground floor rooms. This block had NO issues and provided the normal comforts you would expect. The resort is only 4 years old, but the design is exceptional. Winding paths take you on a circuitous route to the beach, bars, restaurants and reception. It takes a while to orientate yourself. The landscaping is fabulous, with beautiful flowers, potato vines and plenty of bird and wildlife to see. Really well thought out. The Coco Café (24 hours) surrounded by pools with fountains, trees covered newly with Christmas decorations is pretty much central to the resort and is close to the sports bar, the Market Café (breakfast and lunch buffet) and also Desires nightclub. Our holiday intention was to provide an environment to unwind, relax and indulge following a family bereavement for my wife as well as an end of project celebration for me and an opportunity to spend precious time with some of the family. This resort provides the perfect antidote, but what makes it special is the genuine warmth from all the staff. Our attempts to converse in Spanish were always greeted with joy and we particularly want to note the exceptional service provided by Javier (concierge sorting the rooms), Consuelo in the Market Café (and Angelique the busy omelette lady), Carlos & team (Sports and Entertainment), Milca and Alberto (Seaside Grill), Simon (Oceana restaurant), Jorge, Lucia and Michelle (Lobby/Martini Bars) and finally America and Lizbeth in the Pool bars. Sunrise on the beach can be a wonderful experience; the views here are no exception. Plenty of people came down before 7am each morning to capture the silent beauty of the sun rising on the horizon. I managed to capture some lovely shots. I could have stayed on the beach all day, but my family wanted to try different pools, so each day we sat somewhere different. A word of caution. When the resort was super busy, there were plenty of people bagging their spots very early in the morning. Some would not appear until lunchtime or later to claim them (several were swapping between the pool and beach all day too). It’s so difficult to get this right, but we also felt we had to bag the place we wanted early too. I did see some good management when pool staff removed belongings from orphaned loungers to allow those who were actually present to enjoy the space available. The resort should make it clear that long absences will not be tolerated and sun loungers could be shared more optimally during the day. The good bits: • Amazing staff in all areas doing their utmost to make you feel welcome. 10/10 • Wonderful layout, with something for all tastes (gardens, pools, bars, food) 10/10 • Tastefully designed rooms, comfy beds and good concierge/housekeeping staff; loses a point as there is just a curtain separating the bathroom from the bedroom. • Great for exercise, with long beach walks, tennis and a decent gym – 8/10 • Great to be able to swim (not too close!) to the turtles. There are 4 protected areas that you can swim around, probably better early morning or later in the day (especially if you bring your own equipment). There are turtle nests dotted around the next bay. 10/10 • Free entertainment provided both during the day and nightly; some great sets, skilled acrobats combined with great sound and lighting 7/10 • Sitting on a lounger, under a palm-thatched beach canopy (designed like a palapa), with a gentle sea breeze listening to the small waves breaking on the sand. With a cocktail never far away. 10/10 The niggles: • The beach is fine, but compared to Maroma it’s only 2/10; many non-residents also use the beach (up to the high-water line) from the neighbouring resort and also day-trippers coming to see the turtles. And there were CHILDREN! 6/10 • The food is OK and plenty of it; plenty of BBQ/grill options (especially in the Market Café at lunch and several outdoors at night). We’ve been spoilt with amazing food in Asia and the Caribbean. 6/10 • The music: hidden speakers provide a decent mix depending on the time of day. But you can’t get away from it apart from on the beach. The infinity pool by the beach can get rowdy by the swim-up bar at one end or with volley-ball at the other, with various other activities in the middle. It’s also adjacent to the beach volley-ball court, so you won’t get any peace here all day. The middle “social” pool probably offers the best compromise between action and tranquillity. 6/10 The opportunities: • With a little bit of work, good lighting and sound, the beach area could be an amazing night spot. The bars shut at 5pm as the beach area is well in the shady zone by then (sunset is 6pm). But what a cool spot it would be to see the waves breaking on the reef/sandbar at night with some appropriate chill music? Both the Seaside Grill and Oceana would benefit from a fabulous enhanced view of the ocean at night. • The gardeners do an amazing job from early in the morning sweeping up the Sargasso seaweed. Maroma has a great contraption behind a tractor that sieves the sand several times a day. As we all become more eco-friendly, I am sure that many would be happy to help on beach cleaning excursions – there is a huge amount of plastic and other rubbish beyond the resort limits. When all is said and done, this is a great resort for unlimited indulgence, probably best shared with a group of friends. The Secrets concept really works well and we look forward to new openings in Mexico as well as Europe in the future. We are big fans.
