Restaurants & service is spot on!
So far our stay at Sandos Playacar has been a dream! The beach, our room, the grounds - all so beautiful and such great service at every restaurant we went. Cupcake Cafe was has been our nightly spot for coffee & treats. Ruperta was super sweet & helpful, and customized my drink to be dairy-free. They work super hard to treat each guest promptly & with care. We've loved our time and will be so sad to leave!
My paradise away from home!
Once again Sandos Playacar amazes me! Love the location love the staff and absolutely love the beach! Staff kept up with the cleanliness on it and maintain it pristine. Last night here we experienced a power outage and the way they handled this emergency was first class service. Management here dealt with the herd of rude, demanding and insensitive clients very professional. Hats off to Gerardo the manager in charge who did so much more than burn out fires and steam coming from the irrate clients. We were affected by this outage and within 2 hours we were located in a new room for a night. It was awesome despite everything we love Sandos! Not crazy about the new family pool in the new section due to the lack of shade I ended up with massive heat and sun stroke. The original pools in the family section were kept clean and the Riviera Blue snack bar was kept in tip top shape. Good job Minerva and her team!!!! Last but not least the reasons why we come back are for these fine bartenders who never fail to please us with their service and smiles, Luis Hernandez, Fabian and Gustavo(who I wish they kept him at the Avenue bar) are what makes Sandos feel like I am at the Comfort of my own home!!!!!
Great amenities, with some issues
We arrived and checked in but were not given most of the pieces of information that we found out later were important to know. For example, we were given gold wristbands but didn’t know what that meant. Didn’t know there were different colors until the next day when we were told we couldn’t be at one of the pools. We were also about a mile away from our rooms after checking in, no one told us that or offered a shuttle. By the time we made it to our room we were drenched in sweat. That was our first introduction to the place. Evidently there were also “towel cards”. No one told us that and we had to figure it out on our own. Air conditioner broke, had to have it repaired. Power went out twice during the day. The food at the restaurants was decent, especially the main buffet. The Brazilian restaurant was something we were excited about, but very much let down. We’re used to the staff walking around with various meats and giving you different cuts. This one was different, we needed our waitress to bring it, and she only did it when asked. Very odd. The last issue was the internet. It was horrendous everywhere. It’s 2019. They need to fix that. We would go all day without service and it was rather annoying trying to link up with family at the resort without being able to send messages. There were some positives. We were there for a wedding and it was very well done. We had a great time with friends and family and the service overall was great. The beach was also very well maintained. They manage the seaweed very well. No issues at all. We would like to come back to the area, but don’t think we’ll be going to this resort again.
Beautiful location, family with teen boys, lots of food and drink
This is our second time at Sandos, we went with Virgin 2 years ago, Thomas Cook this time, from the UK. I booked the family suite but had been emailing the hotel direct and upgraded both times to a Hacienda, 1 bedroom, 1 king size bed, 3 sofa beds/singles, with a pool, patio and escape from the gentle hustle and bustle of the resort. We stayed for 2 weeks and were truly at home. Ok so its a bit slow here and there unless you tip a lot. I had to call a few times to get the mini bar filled up, but it was sorted as soon as I called reception. The restaurants are nice, a change from the buffet, good portions, and had no issue just turning up to get a table. The burrito and crepes were a great late night or mid afternoon snack, and theres always somewhere to get a drink. The Festival buffet is so varied with fresh and tasty food for all, so much choice, never bored after 2 weeks there. We used it for lunch or breakfast, but preferred the restaurants for a change at night. The new resort pool and buffet are fab too, but we didn't go to the pools at all, the beach is just heaven and we had a pool at the hacienda. This is a resort where you can be private, or not, and considering its so big that's a result. I see reviews where people complain about the size of the resort, getting trolleys is hard etc. But I have multiple sclerosis and didn't struggle really. The staff work hard at the bars, ground staff, room service, entertainment, reception, restaurants, pool, and always say hola and smile. There is a manmade reef down to the right a hundred yards or so, we saw puffer fish, barracuda, stingrays, dozens of multi coloured fish including parrot fish....for free and less than 75 foot from the shore. You can use free snorkel kit from the hotel as well as kayak and paddleboard, for free! Its not a typical Brit abroad holiday, I could count the British accents on one hand I heard, and this was end of July, so its an interesting multicultural resort, much more enjoyable and respectful. I'm not a snob, but I didn't go to Mexico to experience Benidorm! That being said, tips are a vital part of the employees lives. I'm not great at tipping...usually dollars...$3-$5 for room service, bell boy or local taxi, $5-$8 for waiters at night, occasional dollars for drinks and breakfast coffee but I noticed when I got a tip out then asked for the drink/crepe/burrito...I got larger servings! fair enough, so the choice was mine then. Only niggles for us were...teenage boys a bit bored at night, its better for adults or young kids really...but they weren't unhappy or complaining. Its not really had any updating since we were there 2 years ago, but maybe the new hotel will help with that and bring a little class (the pool, venue and buffet is already a bonus) The beach beds have to be bagged early or there are no umbrellas left...lots of beds but more umbrellas needed to cover them....many families take 4 umbrellas for 5 beds, so you need spare! Otherwise, I cant complain one bit and will go back one day100%. As a footnote on seaweed, we were there for 14 days, and only 1 days did I think the sea was too yeuk to go in....but I found a spot a bit further down to enjoy, just yards. The staff clear the seaweed up daily and do a great job. Most days were crystal clear so it didn't put a damper on the holidays at all.

Hotel was nice but definitely needs updating. All the restaurants are scattered throughout the property which is large. Have to wait for trolley to get anywhere. Most restaurants are ok but none were exceptional. The service was excellent in all the restaurants and bars. Edguardo was excellent in helping us with everything from reservations for dinner to getting us a taxi or transportation wherever we needed to go. The beach here was the best part of our trip. It was so beautiful and crystal clear water. Loved it! The people are always friendly and ready to help. Love this about going to Mexico! Don’t think we will be back to this hotel until it gets updated. But we will definitely be back to the Riviera Maya!
