Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.
Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.
At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.
Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.
The Royal Kona Resort in compliance with Hawaii State Law is a 100% non-smoking hotel. Smoking is not permitted in any guestrooms or public areas with the exception of the Lagoon Terrace, Sunset Cove and in a designated smoking section by the pool. Great amenities on the grounds and beautiful views
We had 4 nights at this resort and had an absolutely fabulous time. The rooms, especially the bathrooms, could use an update, but they were very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and the staff are very attentive and friendly. We would absolutely stay again if given the chance to do so.
A beautiful place with a great location.
The grounds at the Royal Kona Resort are just as pictured, the plants flowers ,and grounds were absolutely breathtaking. The pool was beautiful,as well, because you could watch the ocean while swimming in the pool. The lagoon was beautiful as well. Our room overlooked the lagoon as well as being oceanfront. The dinning room and bar were exceptional. The food was great, and the whole open air effect was beautiful. The only negative thing I can say was the room w as not pretty. In fact it was old, but the grounds and resort made up for this. What a great location. The location could not have been better.. We had a great time!
Outstanding view and locations
I booked this resort because I felt the location was great and by the pictures it looked really nice. I started worrying when I seen some of the negative reviews, but I am sure glad we stayed there. Let me start by saying the grounds are beautiful and the view of the ocean is fantastic. The staff is super nice and accommodating. Upon arriving I requested a microwave oven for our room. I was asked did I want it that night or the next day. It was very late when we checked and I said it really didn't matter. I was told they would bring it up that night. We no sooner got into our room and a gentleman appear with the over. I seen reviews stating that the rooms were dated. Well the one we had was furnished with wood furniture with bamboo accents. It may have been dated but had that tropical feel. Yes I suppose the bathroom could use some modern fixtures, but the sink, shower and toilet worked and there was always plenty of hot water. Personally I do not go to Hawaii to admire the bathroom fixtures. For the amount of time we spent in the room it was perfect. We had a partial ocean view room, it overlooked the grounds and also had a great view of the ocean. I guess my only negative is that when we checked in we were told they were putting a $200 hold on our credit card. All and all this was the perfect resort for us. If we ever get back to the Big Island I would definitely stay here.
Great Location, but in need of update
Positives Great location-easy walk to shopping, dining Great views from bar area Very friendly staff Good food Negatives Room and entire building in need of repairs/update Not much shade in the small pool area Room was not as clean as expected Not a lot of privacy on our ocean front balcony Have to pay for wifi? Really? Bottom Line I would go here again, but with lowered room expectations
We loved our time here.
Our room was clean & the resort was beautiful. The pool felt great & the ocean pool looked nice, we just didn't use it. We loved being able to walk to breakfast or dinner. It did rain for most of a day but we got a snack at the bar & listed to a singer/songwriter perform for a few hours in the early evening. We saw a great sunset while listening to him & then walked to dinner. We also enjoyed the luau on the premises. It was very convenient & the setting was beautiful. All of the staff seemed very helpful.
