Hotel Overview

Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

    LOUD/Not Relaxing/Cute

Such a cute place with nice people. Very LOUD. Not relaxing. I wanted to stay here since our last trip. There is LOUD DRILLING at the pool. Also LOUD MUSIC at night and LOUD garbage cans and buses starting at 6 am!! Our room is really cute. They gave us a corner but it's over the garbage cans. (Room 436 don't do it!). No doubles so they gave us a bed but there is no room for it so we take turns sleeping on the loveseat. The poke bowls are excellent and I would highly recommend if you want to eat here that's enough of a visit. Stay somewhere a bit away. It's not a place to chill. I'm from California but it would inky let me say Ireland.

    Wonderful

Amazing place! They treat you right too. I can’t wait to come back and visit again. I’m from Oahu and my boyfriend and I stayed for a weekend. It was the best. The views and the free drinks and the yummy food made it for us. Love the rooms too. We will be back.

Close to everything, not for hanging out or socializing.

Pros: The resort is close to the heart of Kailua Kona. The beach and everything else is only a walk or a short drive away. The lagoon on the side is a great place to swim in private. The rooms are older but the ocean view rooms give a great glimpse of the ocean and possible sunset. Staff was friendly and kind. Cons: There is no outdoor common space. The pool is closed at sunset. The lagoon even sooner. With the exception of a few lounge benches, there is lilttle outdoor space to just hang out and talk with friends. They have security guards who will usher you if you are standing around too long. The Luau was okay. The bar/food area closes early. If you are looking to mingle and hang out with friends, this is not the place. If you want to swim or hang out a little bit longer at the pool, this not the place. If you just want to be close to everything, this is it. This is disappointing since they do charge a resort fee but there is very little resort amenities to make it worth it.

    Wonderful mini staycation!

Check in was a breeze! We were upgraded to an ocean view room with a lanai to watch the fantastic sunsets each night. We loved the dining area overlooking the ocean. Meals were all top notch and portion sizes are large so we were able to share. Hotel is located right in the heart of Kailua-Kona so shops, restaurants, nightlife, farmers market and even a beach are a short walk away. Tip: ask at desk for monthly event calendar. Thursday nights, there are concerts in the lobby area and performers are renowned Hawai’i musicians and recording artists!

    Living the dreams!!

Super views, impeccable service, friendly staff and reasonable pricing. Couldn’t ask for anything more!! I think service is best I have experienced in USA. If I happen to visit again, I know where to stay. Being in historic city center adds to the experience
