Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.
Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.
Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).
Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

Amazing vacation. Beautiful resort
First off a shout out to Santos at the lobby bar. Great service and attitude. The lady and I went there for her 30th birthday and we had a great week. The resort is very clean, the rooms are cute, there is a mini bar in the room and you can get refills for the fridge any time. The food was good, the buffet especially, but there could have been a couple theme nights to add some variety. Otherwise, delicious. The rest of the staff was nice but not in your face all the time which could have been annoying. The beach: HUGE beach, plenty of space to chill! One thing: We went in early January so it was very windy, therefore lots of big waves. To a point where our last 2 days they nearly closed the beach (red flags were up all the time). But the sand is nice, and actually the nicest on the stretch from this hotel to the other Riu hotel on the same beach. That one was rocky and not the same quality for sure. One thing we disliked: Some of the beach vendors were pretty much... let's say real gangsta... Like in your face almost trying to threaten you gangsta... Otherwise, everything was great there too. Definitely would return and even bring the family.
We spent our family moon at the hotel over Christmas. Room was a good size but probably more suited to a couple than a family. We didn't have an issue with the open plan bathroom but we had a shower curtain over the shower door which helped. We mainly used the main pool area which was a good size pool was slightly chilly but much needed to refresh after siting in the sun. The location was fantastic and the beach is beautiful we watched the sunrise a couple of mornings and it was lovely to experience the peace at this time of day. We enjoyed the food and found there was enough choice. We tried all the restaurants and the Steakhouse was our favourite. We booked the snorkelling trip with Scuba Caribe on Christmas Day and swam with Turtles and Stingrays. We booked a trip to Tulum and Coba at the shopping area just down the road as we had read he was good value. We also went to Xel Ha - which was good but I would advise getting there early to avoid the crowds. We took taxis to Puerto Moleros and Akumal for the day too. I would recommend Puerto Moleros but Akumal was a bit of a tourist trap.
Me and my partner went on the 27/12/2019 for 2 weeks. On arrival it was nice but the rooms are a bit dated and the toilets and the showers are small. Didn’t have a nice view but I don’t think many of the rooms do which was a bit disappointing as stayed in riu caribe last year and had a beautiful view of the ocean. There are a lot of wildlife there (which I love) so it’s good to watch. The safe didn’t work on arrival and had 2 power cuts while we were there which wasn’t ideal, think it’s due to the hairdryer having too much power. The pool area itself is clean and the staff are always working hard to keep it that way. Bars can be busy during the day and can be waiting a while on drinks. The food is lovely however you do get a bit bored of it. We went to the Asian restaurant which was nice but didn’t try any of the other ones as been to a few riu’s and they are all the same. It’s about an hours walk to 5th Avenue but it’s only about 150 pasos which is about £6 and worth it. We enjoyed 5th Avenue from a break from the hotel especially after new year. New year was good but they catered a lot for the Spanish, there was hardly an English song which was disappointing but can’t complain waking up to sunshine in 2020. We took a walk to the other hotels which we could use (tequila an playa car). They were ok but preferred this one to the other 2. Beach is amazing and location is good but all in all a good hotel but will probably not be back as there are better ones out there.
Awesome location and beach but beware of smokers
Traveled as a family in early January. We were initially given a room on ground floor but the musky smell was unbearable. Requested a room on the third floor – much better! The rooms are dated as many reviewers said before but this didn’t bother us since everything in the room worked as it should (hot water, ac etc.). Layout of the room with open bathroom area was ok for us (but will not work for all) – there is a glass block wall on one side which provides a bit of separation but not much. When we first arrived on Jan 1, the hotel was at capacity and really crowded. I would avoid peak times. Food was surprisingly good compared to what we expected (better than more expensive places we have stayed in). I like to eat light and always look for fish/seafood/veg options while the rest of the family likes the typical selection from the grill – lots to choose from to suit all tastes. Service was good. People work really hard. Location is great with about a 10-15 minute walk to the 5th avenue and a very short walk to the mall in the Playacar area (prices are about the same if you plan on buying some souvenirs). Beach is beautiful and there are lots of chairs (no need to race to the beach and reserve), no seaweed during our stay. Pool is on the smaller side (compared to other hotels) but water was ok temperature in both the pool and ocean. The only real issue for us was the smoking. I am used to being around smokers especially in places like this, but I have never seen it on this scale. People smoking in the rooms (smoke seeping through the ventilation system), on balconies, at the bar, in the theater, everywhere on the beach and around the pool, lighting a new one from the one they are about to put out. Crazy, but it should provide a perspective of who to expect as far as fellow hotel guests are concerned. We had to move on the beach, leave the show – it was that bad. Cigarette butts everywhere. We have also noticed that people left a huge mess around the pool and on the beach on daily basis, leaving all sorts of garbage behind including plastic bottles, some of which was carried away by the breeze (staff couldn’t keep up with cleaning it). Again, very different from our previous experiences. Sad! All in all, we will likely not return to this hotel but will take a look at other properties in this area because the location is great. If it wouldn’t be for the smoking and the mess people make, we would consider going back.
Good resort, friendly staff
Had a broken stay here as had to travel to Monterrey for a couple of days. Overall enjoyable stay, stayed in the sister hotel 2 doors down last year Riu Playacar, that is a little quieter TBH. In the Yucatan there were plenty of beds but did find to get the best spots on the beach or the pool had to get up that little earlier and claim a place before going for breakfast. The resort it's self is a fair size but not alarming, plenty going on day and night. If you want a bit of piece and quiet I recommend to saty by the top pool, very relaxing. The rooms were basic but clean and tidy with a great mini bar. Housekeeping everyday worked very hard evreywhere and done a great job. Entertainment was OK something to look at when having a few, it got better the more you drunk. The bars were busy but the staff worked hard there to serve as quick as possible. Overall would return, as the location on the beach is something that we like and every morning was fab to work the length of the beach. Also the use of the other 2 hotels was a bonus make sure you do the white or neon night in the Tequila good fun and everything included.
