Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.
Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.
Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).
Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

Good hotel but was better a few years ago
I've recently come back from my second stay at Riu Yucatan. Having been here in 2016 I can say that it was much better then however with that being said it's still a great hotel! The rooms are spacious and includes everything that you need. The beach has a seaweed problem however the staff really do try to make it better and even with the seaweed it's still such a lovely beach. Pool side is great but people do reserve sun loungers early! They do various activities on the beach and at the pool throughout the day to keep everyone entertained. They also do a foam party in the pool every Monday afternoon. As for lunch and dinner it is very repetitive. They do have a variety of food however you can sometimes get bored of the food after being their several days. You no longer need to book at the Steakhouse and Asian restaurant. The asian restaurant is quite basic and doesn't have a large variety of food and the steakhouse has also changed e.g.) they don't do wedges and it's potatoe slices instead so in general the food was a bit of a let down. There is a lunch place next to the theatre called Pepes.. this is a nice break from the main lunch buffet as it has BBQ food. Drinks at the bars are branded and unbranded so be sure to ask for the branded drink! Entertainment is pretty standard for a Riu hotel but definitely go over to Tequilla Friday evenings for the neon party and white party. 5th avenue is a quick taxi ride away and it's great to get out for the day! There is a man down 5th avenue who has a baby tiger and a baby jaguar and charges you to have photos with it. Please do not fall for this as they are not rescues and unfortunately it is just animal cruelty! Coco bongos is also a good night and it really is for people of all ages. We don't usually do the whole party scene but so glad we did this time round! Tip- do not rely on the weather forecast on the internet! When we first arrived we kept checking the weather forecast and it kept predicting rain and thunderstorms however we soon realised this wasn't the case as we had one morning with approx a couple hours of rain! There are several cats and a kitten located around the hotel. They are quite nervous and most will not let you touch them, however they really do appreciate any food you can give them! I did take some food for them and fed quite a few of them so if your an animal lover like me please do the same!
Best Riu Yet
Stayed at the Riu Yucatan a few weeks ago cannot fault this wonderful Hotel every need was catered for and all the staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The Hotel was very clean and the food in all the restaurants was very good especially the Steak Restaurant, but the buffet restaurant always had an excellent selection and the waiting staff were fabulous! We never encountered a miserable face from the gardeners to the reception staff all of them made us feel very welcome and must make a special reference to our room maids they were great! It was an absolutley amazing experience seeing all the wildlife especially the monkeys. Yes the sea is not good because of the Sargasso weed but the Hotel tries its very best to keep it as clear as possible. All in all a fabulous holiday, a credit to the Riu chain.
Lovely hotel and grounds, rooms nice, food good, everything you expect from all inclusive holiday. Always something happening around the pool in the day - there also a chill out pool if you fancy something quieter. For me the beach made this holiday - stunning!
First time in Mexico!
Just a week after coming back from Riu Yucatan I can say that I'm already missing it... Me and my partner had a lovely holiday in Mexico! After reading several reviews as most of us I was a bit apprehensive. From the first minute I walked in the hotel there was one thing that stood out: the staff and the top service they provide! Very friendly and hardworking! I would like to mention "mis amigos" Manuel, Vicente and Finisberto. About the food, I've found the buffet a bit repetitive, but when you got 4 other restaurants on site you can go to the others to vary a bit. The bedroom is a good size, with lots of storage and a small balcony. The maids left a different animal made with towels every day :) Although there's no sea view, there's "jungle view" :) very entertaining to see the howler monkeys and the sereques! We didn't use the swimming pool as we prefer the beach, the water has a great temperature and although there was a bit of seaweed, I was expecting it to be a lot worst. On bad days, the staff cleans it ALL day! The sea was a bit wavey for my taste, not really good for snorkeling. There are plenty of sun loungers and vendors too! If you're not interested they don't bother you. Playa del Carmen is a short taxi ride away and is costs 120 pesos each way, about 5£, and it has loads of shops! Overall, we had a great time at Riu Yucatan, we met lovely people, the atmosphere in the hotel is very relaxed and familiar and I will go back there :)
We stayed here four years ago and it was good then and is still a great hotel for a holiday the rooms were good the facilities also good and in general friendly staff. BUT!!! I’m probably being picky but since they have given the Riu Tequila a complete facelift and into a five star hotel Riu have neglected the Yucatan There is an obvious staff shortage from 4 years ago I think staff have defected to the Tequila. The waiter staff in the dining hall are run ragged having to multi task. The bit that spoilt it for me was the appalling bar service sometimes there were only two working at a four sided bar so if you stood in the wrong place you weren’t getting served and our downfall as brits is we use a queuing system this is a concept sadly lost to the eastern europeans who have the manners of a vulture. The reception bar is a nightmare they shouldn’t make coffee at the bar there should be a self service machine because you have to wait too long to get served. My advice is to use the bar by the quiet pool the guy there is brilliant or go to the Riu Tequila which you are able to use their facilities the night entertainment is better and the bar runs like clockwork. The bar issues are more of an annoyance it really doesn’t reflect the rest of the hotel.
