Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.
Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.
Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).
Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

My girlfriend and I we for 7 days to Playacar. I’ve stayed in these Riu’s in Playacar a couple times and they never cease to amaze me. It’s hard to read the bad reviews just cuz I understand some of them but those don’t necessarily ruin ones trip (or ours to say the least). Rooms were super clean and kept up daily. Also, mini bar with big 1.5litres waters, pop, and of course a liquor dispenser above. I understand the glass shower door with no privacy. I could see if you were travelling with your children you would want to fix that. We didn’t have to but did think (I have a daughter) if we had kids with us we would just use or towel clips and towel- easy fix. The restaurants are amazing and have everything for all diet restrictions- keto, vegan, vegetarian, and even have halal meats. Margarita was the best place. It was the lunch buffet by the beach and pools. BEACH- wow 🤩 Absolutely amazing. Best beach in Mexico 🇲🇽. Big waves, clean, low seaweed, and the white fine sand we all love. We did the beach everyday. Weather was amazing. On my birthday they decorated our room with balloons and streamers and I got a letter from head office. That night we also did CoCo Bongo which I highly recommend- separate review for them coming. Sure the rooms are a little outdated but we didn’t go to Mexico 🇲🇽 to spend all the time in the room. We love Playacar for it’s safe fun environment and with the Riu brand you have access to other resorts- bars, sports bar, disco, and pools.
Lovely holiday shame about rooms
First time to Mexico been to a Rui hotel a few times in cape vide canaries all 5***** so expecting the same result here. Let’s start with the positives spot on right on the beach beautiful clean beach never saw any seaweed that I noticed in a few reviews said was bad pool lovely although one pool was closed towards end of holiday due to tiling going on in pool also swim up bar was closed for half a day again due to tiling going on so pools were well maintained Entertainment staff superb around the pool got you motivated with the water aerobics also the gym on the beach with the Pilates every morning and gym exercise in afternoon bar at both pools staff were excellent service especially with the cocktails food was very good. A good selection throughout the day I am a very fussey eater yet I surprised myself just how much I eat. Now for the negative Hotel is spread out but in blocks with three floors to each block no lifts in blocks so if you have mobility issues you are restricted to ground floor only the block we were in block 8 very dated in regards to painting. Paint peeling of the railings along the corridors and on building itself you could see where they have been touched up In our room there was a constant damp smell the furniture was dated and damp all our clothes on packing to leave felt wet. Our bed sheets were not.changed the whole 2 weeks we were there even after asking at desk for fresh sheets it never happened the pillows were like cushions uncomfortable and damp like the sheets 3 times we had to request for fresh hand towels 2 occasions we returned to find no towel in room. The fridge is supposed to be checked and replenished when required again had to ask at front desk for stuff for fridge. The shower door was a full sheet of glass no privacy to wash without be looked at no door from room through to dressing area If you booked for a view the only views we saw was trees so when you got up In the morning opened your door all you saw was trees no view of pool or sea The air conditioning was so noisy we left it off ceiling fan did not work after 5 days of damp musty smell we spoke to our tui rep.Luke had only been there for a few months he was amazing I told him all the problems he spoke to the management team most got resolved we were offered another room but we felt if we moved it could be worse somewhere else so stuck it out the air conditioning got sorted the ceiling fan got repaired the fridge replishment was a bit hit and miss the fungi on walls both sides of shower door was painted over with white paint the glass mirror in dressing area nothing was done about that still badly marked sheets still felt damp and wet got proper pillows with pillowcases. When we got home had to wash all clothes as all stank of damp The management did apologise for our little problems with a bottle of champagne even that was very dry!!!!. Would I go back yes to Mexico but no to the hotel maybe another Rui next door Rui palace or cancum
OK, but bad glitch in "free" shuttle transportation
This was our 3rd stay at this hotel. We found that the quality of the food had gone down a bit. The Asian restaurant was a mishmash of Japanese sushi, Indian dishes, and Chinese dishes. There were surprising offerings at the buffet, such as red cabbage and apple. A lot of the hotel customers seem to come from Germany and Northern and Eastern Europe, hence the cabbage. Riu offers a free shuttle to and from Cancun airport. The trip from Cancun was fine. We ordered the shuttle back. The driver went to the wrong hotel in Cancun rather than in Playa del Carmen. We had to take a taxi to the airport ($50). We wrote to the hotel with supporting materials. The reply was that "the driver indeed went to the wrong hotel, but so what." We are still waiting to be reimbursed seven weeks later. We have stayed at many Riu hotels in Playa over the years. Never had a bad experience before. How disappointing that such a small detail can leave a vacation on a sour taste.
Visited this hotel from 13th jan till 27th jan .check in was really fast and easy, reception staff very friendly and helpful .bags taken upto room for you , room was nice , my only gripe was the balcony was shaded by the trees . The food was really nice in the buffet restaurant are here mostly as couldn't fault it,tried the steak house was lovely , you was very spoilt here the staff was very friendly and couldn't do enough for you.there was plenty off different restaurants to choose from, they had a little bar by the pools you get snacks from too for lunch. The beach was lovely and clean spent most days there the staff worked so hard on the beach .loved getting my coffee in morning from the bar next to the buffet restaurant , the staff never forgot what drinks you drank . It was my birthday while we was away, came back from a day trip and the tui reps had put balloons and banners on the room it was a really nice touch . The animals at this hotel was great , really enjoyed my time here will definatly be back .
The hotel and staff are awesome. The food was good, rooms are clean, entertainment good, and a neat little shopping area within walking distance. Pools were good although had some closures on the big pool a couple of times and the ocean and beach were really amazing. The bar tending staff are fast, friendly and a shout out to Leonardo who appeared to always enjoy his job and the people no matter how busy. Had a fun time, saw the howler monkeys and a huge iguana, all in the resort. Hope to do a repeat some day.
