Eat, Drink, Swim, Repeat (plus an optional nap on the beach)
We have stayed twice (2018, 2019) at the RIU Republica in the Dominican Republica. Both times we were celebrating my birthday. RIU really knows how to celebrate...balloons in the room and the restaurant, live music supplied by talented waiters, chocolate cake, plus a small painting of a native scene! We stayed for a week this year and enjoyed every day. I swam twice a day every day in one of the large, open-air pools. We enjoyed eating in the main restaurant (Altagracia), the Italian restaurant, the Asian restaurant, and the Spanish restaurant, and the Steakhouse. We had champagne at every meal plus wine at several. I had a relaxing massage at the Renova Spa. The bartenders at all the bars do a great job and appear to be having a great time doing so. We tried and enjoyed several drinks that were new to us (Doctor Funk, Mango Daiquiri) in addition to our nightly brandy served in a steamed snifter. The nightly entertainment was hit or miss, but most people seemed to enjoy it. The grounds are immaculately groomed and the cleaning crew does a superb job. Our room was comfortable and had a nice partial view of the ocean. I spent every afternoon napping on a chaise longue, under a palm frond umbrella, listening to the surf...paradise! We have now stayed in three RIU properties (DR, Cancun, and NYC) and have enjoyed them all.
Mixed feelings, won’t return
I have mixed feelings about this resort. This is a long one so I’ll break this down into categories below: Service: 5/5 The staff here are amazing. So friendly, great service, always smiling. I wish people tipped them more because they truly deserve it. The mini bar was refilled every 2 days with water, beer and pop. We initially had two single beds and the room was missing an iron and on both occasions the front desk sent someone within 15 mins. They knew it was our anniversary and had truffles and a nice letter in the room for us with balloons - very thoughtful! Resort/Pools/Beach: 3/5 The resort is new (2017), modern and the beach is well taken care of. Personally I did not like how huge the resort is as it takes 7-10 minutes to walk from the lobby to the beach. There are about 1500 rooms and 3500 capacity. Request a room closer to the beach if you have the choice. The resort had great events such as two pool foam parties at Riu Macao (transfer included) which were awesome. They even brought the Cocobongo DJ on the resort for a “neon party” one of the nights! This is definitely a party resort with lots of bachelor/bachelorettes and singles, not great for couples looking for a romantic getaway. There are many pools, some with a party-filled atmosphere and some away from the noise if you just want to relax. There are 4-5 water slides closer to the lobby which our party enjoyed but they were very fast and emptied into a shallow pool so be careful. As for the pools, the most active ones were those closest to the beach near the bar.**Beware of the pool with the swim up bar. On our 7-night stay they caution-taped the swim-up bar pool on 5 different occasions due to someone puking in it. It was always open the next day but one has to wonder how they’re cleaning these so well overnight. Even looking at the water in this pool vs the other ones, it was noticeably cloudier so we avoided it for the most part. The beach was huge with tons of palapas and beach chairs. We had no issues getting a chair even if we went later in the afternoon, it just won’t be in the front row. There are a few vendors on the beach and people asking you to take pictures with monkeys or iguanas. They come around a few times but once you make it clear you are really not interested they leave you alone. Food: 2/5 Here is where the resort fell short for me. NO ROOM SERVICE! While the buffet had a ton of options, I didn’t enjoy anything. The food was very heavy or deep fried and very salty. Needs more fresh vegetable options. Generally, there was a lot of pizza, pastas, fried chicken and nachos in the buffet. A ton of desserts too but nothing to write home about. I avoided all of the fruit as the general rule is if you don’t peel it don’t eat it. Both mine and my husbands stomach was off for the last 5 days of the trip. Lots of “speciality” restaurants, but most of these are also buffet! The only true a la carte restaurants are the steakhouse and kulinarium (gourmet). The steakhouse was my favourite restaurant with rib eye as the steak. Good flavour and the cut is huge! The Italian (buffet), kulinarium (a la carte) and Ole (Spanish food-mixed buffet/a la carte) was also good. Avoid the Japanese restaurant (Kaori). This buffet made everyone in our party sick. The jerk chicken near the beach is more “bbq” than “jerk”. Make sure you ask for the bbq sauce (they don’t usually keep the bottle out you gotta ask for it). It is not spicy at all but great flavour. We mixed the bbq sauce with sriracha and ate this almost every day. Excursions: 4/5 We did 2 excursions. The first was dune buggies thru a beach vendor for $40 US pp. Let’s just say “you get what you pay for”. If you are okay with no health and safety - this is for you. No helmets, no seat belts and the buggies were rusted. Almost as if they bought old buggies from the reputable tour companies and fixed them up. We had several break downs on our tour that caused us to stop and wait a lot. They replaced the battery on our friends cart right before we took off and they still broke down 3 times! Saving the $20 per person is not worth the headaches and the safety concerns. DEFINITELY don’t do a beach vendor if you have children! The other dune buggy tours we passed all had nicer buggies, helmets and seat belts so it’s really because we booked through a cheaper company. We booked the Saona Island tour through Sunwing (Nexxus tours) for $95 US pp. It is a 1.5 hour bus ride where you hop on a catamaran and do an hour sail to the island. Sunwing has an agreement with the island to have a special part only accessible to them with 75 beach chairs, a buffet and bathroom facilities. No other tour company has exclusive access to this part of the island. The water was beautiful, crystal clear and the atmosphere was so relaxing. Buffet food was chicken, fish, pastas and rice which was okay. The drinks were flowing from the catamaran until the bus ride back. To get from the island back to the bus you take a speed boat and stop off at the natural pool- beautiful, warm and relaxing. This tour was the highlight of our trip and needs to be done at least once. All in all good trip but won’t go back to this resort.
Not a 5 star
Don't get me wrong a very good hotel, definitely not a 5 star though. Rooms very clean and spacious, but ask for a quiet room. Foreign visitors can be very noisy, this is geared towards the younger generation. Hardly any staff speak English those that do don't understand it very well, they do try to be helpful and are always smiling. The swim up bar pools can be messy with scum on the water due to sunscreen and drinks being spilt. The regular pools don't have this problem. Tables around the pool we're only cleaned once in the 2 weeks we were there, also spillages weren't wiped very quickly, this could be because there weren't enough staff due to being low season, hotel was only half full. Gourmet restaurants we're not open every day, they swapped them about, check the menu boards for opening nights, this caused problems on our holiday as they closed at 9 and refused people entry, therefore a lot of people were eating in the buffet restaurant that is open every day. Only two of the gourmet were waiter service, the others were buffet, which is ok but does not make it special. Food is ok but gets cold quick due to aircon. We enjoyed the relaxation and the friendliness, but would not rush back. Can highly recommend the Twilight Terracross, this was good, we enjoyed the cenote swim and the meal was excellent, also Saona Supreme trip, take plenty of sunscreen though, both through TUI.
Honeymoon in paradise
We stayed 9 nights in Riu Republica for our honeymoon from september 25 to oct 5. From the monent we arrived everything was amazing. They greeted us with cocktails at the reception. Check-in was about 5-10 minutes, after that we found our room very easily. Room 114 on ground floor, amazing view of the garden and close to everything, even to the sports bar which 24/7 open, and after the parties we always needed a few burgers. The restaurants are all very good, but we liked the main buffet the best. It has a little bit of everything. The themed restaurants are also good, we loved the asian, we both like sushi. The angus burger in the steakhouse is sooo good. Keep in mind that it is a 5 star hotel, not a restaurant, so if your used to eating fancy stuff I'm sure you will find flaws, but we loved everything, and I'd say 99% of people love it. One day they had beef ribs, that was my favourite in the main buffet. The jerk chicken hut was good too, you don't have to dress up for it, it is right on the beach. We mostly stayed at the beach and in the pool bar during the day. The pool bars are great, all the bartenders are very nice and fast. There are all kinds of drinks, cocktails, soft drinks, beer etc. The beach is like a dream, the sand is unbelievably soft, the water was warm. The waves are pretty big, it is a lot of fun. We also went to the riu pool parties, which are held at the main riu resort. They take you there with on old school bus. It's a 10 min drive. The drinks and snack and everything there is included in the all inclusive. We really enjoyed these parties, mostly the jungle party. We tried the slides at hotel too, they are VERY fast. I would go back to this hotel anytime our honeymoon was perfect there. It is like paradise the garden is amazing, there are so many palm trees. I would recommend it.
Amazing, especially La Ola Bar and Yajaira
This is our second time at Riu Republica (September/October 2019). We have requested the reception to give us a room in a quiet area, which request was immediately satisfied. Most of our time we spent in the Latin swimming pool and in "La Ola" bar. Yajaira, working at this bar, made the best cocktails and was very kind and attentive to us during the whole stay. The entertainment program was very diverse and interesting.
