Riu Republic
We arrived at this hotel with trepidation after all the poor reviews we had read online regarding noise/cleanliness/ and service. Upon entering our room we were very pleasantly surprised as the room was spacious / spotless and welcoming. The whole complex was well maintained and we constantly saw staff cleaning areas, in particular first thing in the morning when we saw a team sanitizing all the outside chairs before breakfast. the pools were clean and yes if you went to the pool bars there was noise but there were plenty of sunbeams and pool areas which were quiet. food was good and there was a large choice , the staff on the bars were excellent and we never had to wait more than a few minutes. I would suggest a better presence of security on the corridors in the early hours a we had a couple of incidents with people returning after being out all night, one did end up with a altercation and although we randomly reception there was no answer. Apart from that we had a really good break and could not understand the negative comments made in peoples reviews.

Paradise!
Hotel room - we stayed in room 3337 which was above the steak house, our room was always clean no mould. The cleaners came in every day but only changed the bed when you requested so. (There is a card to place on the bed when you would like the bed changing) The mini bar was restocked every two days but if you needed extra you could request more on the TUI app. We used the app to request extras and they brought them up to the room within the hour. The bathroom was spacious and clean and the cleaners changed our towels every day! Hotel room plug socks are also fitted with USB attachments which we found really useful. Entertainment - the entertainment was fab, lots of shows going on at the main theatre every night & the parties at the party venue were amazing. We went to the pink party & the jungle party both at the venue, the transport is completely free and all drinks, food and face painting at the venue is also free. You can find the schedule for the themed parties on the RIU app - this is helpful so you know what stuff to pack. Food - there is plenty of choice at the hotel for food, there’s a number of different restraunts and buffets. For people leaving bad reviews on the buffet areas I think we found it was best to go to the buffets when they first open. This means all the buffet areas are fresh and untouched. We found the small buffet was a better option as not as many people went to this one and it was a lot calmer. We also visited the Italian and the Spanish restraunt which were both really good. The jerk chicken shack on the beach is also free and is really tasty! Drinks - drinks are all fab lots of choice of cocktails, soft drinks, shots, beer and spirits. We bought cups from the shop on the resort which keep your drinks cold. The bar staff are more than happy to wash and refill these for you - I would definitely reccomend taking some with you. Pools and water slides - there’s lots of different pool areas, the main pool is abit crazy but is good to try for one day. Lots of people partying in the pool & loud music playing. There’s also a number of other pools which are more relaxed if you prefer that. The water slides are really fun and completely free! Abit of fun to break up the day. Beach area - lots of beds available, as you are walking onto the beach they hand out free cocktails and also have waiters coming onto the beach area to bring you drinks if you want them. Theres also a security guard, which I thought was a great touch. Towels - we didn’t have an issue with towels, we used to have breakfast and go straight to the towel collection point and there was always towels available. Tips - we tipped most staff members 1 dollar notes, unless they really went over the top with their service and we would tip 5 dollars. We also tipped the cleaner as she did a great job. You have to remember the staff in the Dominican don’t get paid a lot of money, so tips are appreciated. You will notice they all work super long hours and work very hard. Excursions - we did saona island, which was lovely but please be aware it’s a long journey too and from the island! We also did the adventure park (buggies, horse riding, lazy river & the zip wire) which was very fun! We did a visit to coco bongos on the Saturday night which was amazing we did the gold area, this included all drinks for the whole night and a meal (burger and chips). We also did the dirt buggies and cave swim - which was really good.

You get what you pay for
Room: Double room sea view Room number: 3140 Floor: 3rd Floor Pros: - Room was cleaned properly - Most staff were friendly - Resort greenery was well maintained - Party vibes and entertainment - Great beach Cons: - Check in process - Elevator was out of order for the entire stay - Key cards for the room kept giving trouble - Lack of pool towels - Environment not too hygienic - Food was average at best - Room was dated - Room balcony screen door was a hassle to open and close Hotel transfer was not too bad. RIU Republica is away from the other resorts, it was the last stop after dropping guests at the other RIU locations. We checked in online but it took way longer that those persons who did not check in online. We booked a double room sea view and were expecting better views or at least be placed in a room closer to the beach. You can just about see the sea above the coconut trees; not much of a sea view. The screen door was a hassle to open and close, and you need to open and close it a lot since there's mosquitos around day and night. The shower was functional but a bit rusted. Bed was comfortable, pillows were ridiculous; we requested 2 more, got 1. Fridge was well stocked. The elevator to our part of the hotel was not working for our entire stay. We did not mind taking the stairs, but the issues with the key cards not working almost every day made it a chore to walk up and down 3 flights of stairs and to the lobby and back to get the door open. (key cards weren't even kept next to my phone) The food and drinks were just average and some areas were not too hygienic. The jerk shack, breakfast and the lobby bar were the highlights, but still average. The specialty restaurants weren't anything special, just a rebranded "themed" buffet. There was a sewage smell in some areas of the resort. There was such a lack of pool towels we bought 2 from the boutique. Expensive and not good quality. The beach area was great, enough lounge chairs and the area was well kept. The sea was clear but a bit rough and the current is a bit strong. Beach traders were there, but not pushy. There's a hidden tipping culture here, it's not something we're accustomed to. We noticed persons got "special treatment" from staff when tipping regularly. Staff in general were mostly friendly. The nightlife and parties were great, they did a good job with entertainment. Nightclub was crowded but still enjoyable. The crowd was mixed of all ages, most on the younger side. This resort is tailored to a certain demographic; the partygoers. This is a party resort firstly. In my opinion, R&R comes second here. If you like to party or you come with a group of friends to party, this is the resort for you. Most of the persons looked like they could care less about the food, drinks and cleanliness of the area since they're here to party; there's nothing wrong with that though. R&R can be done, but all the short comings make it had to do so. RIU Republica is an average and somewhat of a good value resort because of the price. We expected a better value for money having stayed at other RIU properties. There are many things that could have made the experience better. Depending what you're looking for for your vacation, it can be the resort for you.

Bad resort. Never going back!
While some of the staff is nice and friendly, some seem to hate their job and if you say “thank you” or “gracias” they just ignore you as if they hate what they are doing. I have been to many Rius, mostly in Cancun, and Riu Republica is the most disorganized resort I’ve been to. They have a daily activities schedule in their app but they don’t follow them. Things like Bingo, Kahoot, never happened while I was there and when I asked some employees they didn’t even know what “Kahoot” was. The entertainment team does some activities when they feel like, at inconsistent times, rarely following a schedule. The evening shows consist of repetitive Spanish music and even when they announced a Vegas Show it was changed to a Tropical Latino show last minute (with the same repetitive Spanish music). My wife enjoys dances but even though the schedule listed dance lessons we didn’t see anything near the pool and when we asked no one from the entertainment team could give us a clear answer as to where it was or whether it was happening or not (and we speak English and Spanish). They had a nice dance activity at the beach and once it was over the entertainment guy said there was going to be another one the next day at 11:30am. We’re still waiting for it. My wife was looking forward and was really disappointed. Riu needs to train their staff better! Room was ok but we could not control our AC. We couldn’t even turn it off and it got pretty cold in our room night. The pools are good but the main party pool plays repetitive Spanish music. They simply can’t “read the room” Food was ok at some restaurants but the steakhouse dinner was terrible. Steak had no seasoning and fries tasted as if they were done the day before. Spanish and Kulinarium restaurants were ok. I’m certainly never going back to this resort!

Unsatisfactory Experience
Resort was advertised as 5 star but more like 3. Badly in need of upgrading which does not have to take away from the resort if it was clean. Public areas dirty, food substandard for a RIU and service was mediocre. Buffet food lukewarm and often lots of empty items. Some wait staff ignored you. Sunwing rep did not provide accurate information for excursion and ended up costing us extra funds we did not expect. When we discussed with him he told us we had misunderstood the information even though we confirmed with others who sat in on the same presentation. He pocketed $10 US from each of us to have the bus stop at a river which was already part of the tour!! Be aware of “Little Sammie” at this resort. The beach is beautiful although there is really no service from staff for drinks. The wifi was excellent! We had great coverage over the whole resort. The website said 1300 rooms but it as a lot larger than that. The area we were in had 500+ rooms and 1 very small elevator!!!
