Customer Ratings & Reviews

Booked this holiday as a last minute deal starting end on May. It had excellent reviews and was very good value. Around 50 minute transfer from airport in a kind of gated community with another 5 Riu Hotels in close proximity. You can use sister hotels Tequila and Yucatan but not for dinner. Open plan large reception area so no air conditioning. The hotel is is not particularly attractive with a series of blocks on either side of a central pathway leading down to the pools and beach. Our room was 3214 with the balcony facing the central pathway. The room was spacious and very modern with a huge double bed. It had an open plan shower room so when you exit the shower you are more or less in the bedroom. It had a door to the toilet. Drinks optics and well stocked mini bar in the room. Free safe and thankfully good air conditioning as it was a pretty constantly 35/36 deg C minimum daytime and didn’t drop much lower in the evening. It was really hot and humid having rain for the first 4 days. This probably accounted for the numerous insect bites we encountered even though we used repellent 3 times a day. Maybe it was the sand flies on the beach as we were there most days. Excellent beach with plenty of beds but as other people reported the horrendous seaweed problem. They really need to up the game a little to dispose of it quickly. There were great heaps of the stuff on the beach waiting to be moved which caused a bad smell and attracted lots of flies. The first 5 metres of the sea was awash with the stuff and it was constantly being washed up on the beach and slowly removed. By the the end of our holiday it was dramatically reduced in the sea which was extremely warm and clear when past the seaweed barrier. There are two pools, one mainly used by families which is left of the pathway and the other on the right mainly used by adults with boom boom music and foam parties. Lots of noisy people at the swim up bar who seemed to spend all day there. There are 5 restaurants which you can use anytime without booking - great. They were all pretty good. They could do with a bar down at the Mexican and steak restaurant as the nearest one is the pool bar which shuts at 6pm. The other 3 bars are all up at the reception end of the hotel as is the entertainment stage. Watch out for the Michael Jackson show, it was excellent. They also had some entertainment in the reception area. The bars do an excellent selection of cocktails and most of the time they are using international brand drinks. The town of Playa del Carmen is around a 30 minute walk from the hotel and there are plenty of everything there. We made a trip to the Chichen Itza village which is well worth seeing but be careful, prices vary dramatically with T Cook charging an enormous amount so we booked via an agent who visited the beach regularly. The hotel is a little unusal in that there are wild animals roaming around which are Government protected. Apparently the hotel complex was built within a jungle area and these animals have remained as residents of the hotels! Overall we enjoyed our stay at this hotel and don’t really have any complaints. The food was good the drinks were good, it was a good standard and there was a good mix of different nationalities. The staff were excellent. We will be back.
anniversary celebration holiday
flew with tui on dreamliner premier class well worth paying extra. you will receive visa card and emigration card to fill out on route make sure you fill out the bottom section aswell of emigration one, lots of people got caught out and had to go back and fill it in then had to rejoin the queue .Arrived at the hotel after an hour transfer greeted with a cocktail got checked in quickly by very friendly reception. Our room was spotless ample hanging space with enough hangers, a few toiletries and even flannels. The food in buffet and al a carte restaurants were superb such a choice of fine fresh hot food. A big praise to the chefs. a big thanks to Freddy and Adrian for keeping us refreshed drink wise around the pool. the beach was stunning yes a little bit of seaweed and after a storm was a bit more. i do think people are exagerating about it, it is so fine, you should visit the south coast of england to see what real seaweed is like! Was pleasantly surprised at the amount of branded drinks that were available as part of all inclusive. On the day of our anniversary our room was decorated with flowers chocolates and strawberries dipped in chocolate such a nice touch. one tiny thing to mention someone spat out chewing gum by the side of the pool which was there for over a week which did surprise me as they are so many cleaners around. we had a fantastic time much better than expected due to all the staff being so warm and friendly definately a holiday to remember
great place to do nothing
had a lovely week here with my daughter. the beach is beautiful and the hotel has all you could possibly need. The staff are fantastic. Everyone we dealt with was professional and charming. They really made it a great trip. As vegetarians we had great food options and unlike many places lots of protein including falafels, veggie burgers and beans as well as great fruit and vegetables. I loved the refried beans and of course all the fabulous avocado dishes. while there was plenty of entertainment for those who want it there was plenty of quiet space to read books and play cards. The bar staff were great and made lots of alcohol free cocktails for my teen while I enjoyed the more traditional drinks. If you want a relaxing sunshine trip this is perfect
Our family loved our stay here. The staff is very friendly and the hotel is very clean. We always choose to stay at riu resorts because of this. We plan to stay at one in Jamaica next year. This was our 3rd stay at riu and i plan on continuing.
Avarage 3star hotel with great food
Riu Playacar is a lovely hotel, but definitely not 4/5 stars in European standard. Rooms are spacious but basic, our one was in block one and was impossible to stay on the balcony due to a construction work next to the hotel. What made me really disappointed is that all (!!) our sheets and towels were stained, asked the reception to change it,but only got the same so gave up. Toilet was leaking non stop too. Staff is nice and smile a lot,but despite tipping every single time we got in touch with them, they only show you the super kindness if you really pull the big notes out, like $5-10 for a cocktail and so on. Entertainment was not the best, guys are working so hard and long hours but honestly it should be different in many ways. Food was absolutely amazing, can't fault it. The swim up bar is a top thing in the hotel, but should be more entertaining with more music and stuff like that. The beach was lovely,we were very lucky with the sea weed, had only one bad day,but it's there every day. If we ever going back to Playa del Carmen (hope the sea weed situation will make it possible), we'll try one of the sister hotel, liked it more.
