    Vacation Palace Dec31 to Jan 14 2020

In general we were satisfied with our 14 night stay at this hotel Palace Riviera Maya. The service was excellent throughout their facilities. Appreciated very much the drink service at the beach chairs, and reception area. Dining experience was always good. Food plentiful with many options to choose from. A lot of the food was prepared in advance so if you went later in the evening several plates were cold.Lunch buffet was also cold on many occasions. Beach was clean, more than enough chairs, no need to reserve early. Only big problem we found was that there was no-where on the beach for shade! All the palm trees on the property had their heads chopped off, and leaves all tied together.Don’t know what they were thinking when they did this. They Were also no sun umbrellas on the beach. Entertainment lacked , as nothing special for a 5 star resort except the normal all inclusive evening entertainment you can find everywhere.Would have expected much better from a 5 star resort. Also there was no beach entertainment, only pool entertainment.Wi-fi service was very good.Room was clean and updated.Open concept bathroom No privacy Hotel staff all very welcoming and ready to give their best! Although we were satisfied with our stay we dont think we would return to this hotel.

    Nice hotel and beach

Only disappointment was the food. The theme restaurants were worse than the buffet. It was consistently below par for most all inclusives, The Riu palace in Cancun was nicer. that said we did have a great time. They had good entertainment and great service. I would consider returning. I did like playa del Carmen better than hotel row in Cancun

    Never a 5 star!

Stayed here for 11 nights as part of a Tui package holiday. Well I say stayed 11 nights we opted to leave after 5 nights. We disliked it so much we opted to pay an extra £2k to change hotels and checked out early. In essence adding 50% again to the price of the holiday eye watering but worth it to not stay at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya any longer than needed. Firstly the staff are great as ever in Mexico it seems. Cannot do enough for you. But the hotel is far from 5 star. We left and went to Breathless Xhale section. In comparison was only slight more per night but in a completely different league on every level Riu is truly poor. Drinks, service, food, amenities, entertainment, quality of fit and finish. Check in: Took some time with only 2 checking staff for about 30 people but did offer a cold beer or fruit juice. Not a WOW lobby just looks and feels tacky. Rooms: Rooms are very small for the price 35sqm is very little also the furniture used is very cheap and nasty (think cheap ikea). Again direct comparison to the new hotel we went to can only be a 1 star for the price. Some may not like the bath in room. It didn’t bother us as a couple but it’s not just privacy but water on floor etc some may not like. Definitely not a 5 star room. No luxury touches and poor quality linens and fittings etc. Cooky cutter mass brand hotel with items mass purchased as cheaply as possible rather than any sort of 5 star luxury. Cleaners do a good job cleaning daily so make sure you leave them a daily tip as they work hard and leave the rooms immaculately clean. Mini bar and drinks replenishment patchy (so may need to ask as we did a few times). Bottle of Bacardi was empty on arrival and never replenished. A few points of note are no dressing gown or slippers as you may expect from a 5 star. Toilets don’t seem to flush well (so check number 2s to avoid next person having a nasty surprise). Poor quality soaps etc so bring your own is advised. Very noisy (thin walls and noisy walk ways and can hear people above). Woken at 6:30am by trolleys crashing in halls could hear every conversation as people walked past. So suggest getting a room at end of buildings. In comparison we went to a hotel with party sections and it was blissfully quiet in comparison when in the room - go figure! Gym: Small and not much kit. Food: Worst AI food we have had by some margin and limited choice. Small menus and only 5 restaurants (plus buffet). Not a single meal I would go back and eat again which is rare. Also 2 points of note restaurants have no bar service so wine, cava (nasty!), beer or soda only. No spirits, cocktails, after dinner liquors etc. Also you DO NOT have access to the other resorts restaurants for dinner (just for lunch). Drinks: No top shelf available just usual Smirnoff / Absolute for Vodka etc. They also use locally branded in pool bars so be sure to ask by brand. Beach: Not sure what all the fuss is about here. For us both the TRS / Palladium, Breathless and GBP Akumal better beaches by comparison much more picture perfect. Worst of all as it’s public / easily accessible it’s full (and I mean full) of sellers. Sellers of all sorts, hats, fake cigars, jewellery. Be prepared to be approached about 20 times and hour. Literally once every 2-3 minutes at some points, no joke. We did the beach 2 days for a few hours and got fed up in the end as this makes this the least relaxing beach we have ever been on in Mexico. Also it’s very exposed so seems to suffer with lots of winds. We were hoping to Kayak but didn’t get the chance. So we stayed by the pools mostly. Which are also poor. Poor quality loungers etc. Not 5 star pool areas at all. Location: A point I wasn’t aware of before travel is Playacar isn’t really ‘gated’ in true sense of the word and therefore not as secure as it first may seem. More a false sense of security. There are simply security barriers on the road in that check cars. Pedestrians (locals and tourists alike) are free to walk in and out in with 0 challenges through the ‘security’ checkpoint, through other walkways. So anyone can really get in and out as long as on foot. Entertainment: White party was good fun. Nightclub very small, the size of 2 regular front (living) rooms in a house. Rest of the entertainment really poor. As with the food by far the worst we have seen at a Mexican AI. Hotel General: I normally like the clean / clinical Vegas look but it’s very cheaply done here (as in poor quality). Not sure where the reported $million went. I would imagine remodelling the pool areas. They do lots of stuff on the cheap to, towel cards for 1 towel per person. In the room you have 2 towels also. As for sharing other hotels you are a 10 min walk along paths with no street lights. So you walk or pay the 100 pesos each way. The hotel only offer transport on a Friday for neon and white parties. Wouldn’t surprise me if they had a deal with taxi drivers given the 100 pesos charge for 1km. Overall very disappointed by the hotel. Completely over hyped and over priced for the quality of rooms, amenities, food and drink. I think most people who give it 5 stars are repeat Riu fan customers / haven’t visited some of the truly star 5 hotels so little to compare to. In terms of age ranges - allot of 60 plus Americans and Germans here give it a retirement home vibe. Sadly despite being one of the more expensive hotels we have stayed at by far the worst hotel we have stayed at on holiday. As I said we abandoned it for another and in comparison it’s a 1 vs a 5 hence the brutal rating. You can’t charge £200+ a night for such a poor overall level of quality in every department. The Tequilla is the best value in the area I think given the difference between this hotel and that one for our stay was about £1200 so if you must travel to this area and must stay at a Riu I would chose that. Although personally I think there are many better options in the area. If you are over 60 and like cheap decor, 0 luxury, poor quality food and drink it’s probably perfect otherwise I would give it a wide berth.

    Beautiful remodel

This was our 3rd time staying at the RIU Palace Riviera Maya in Playacar. We returned this year to see the remodel that was just completed at the hotel. Wow! what a transformation. The look is totally different. We liked how it was more open and the colors of very nice. It was great to see a lot of the same employees as over time, they are all like family. The added pools made it less crowded, the beach was free of seaweed and the new Italian restaurant was fabulous. I personally enjoyed the bath tub in the center of the room. Had mixed reactions from other people.

    Excellent stay, twice!!

We stayed at this resort twice in two years and it is just perfect. We are beach people and this resort has the best beach. Fantastic customer service and excellent food. Wifi works everywhere in the resort and you are walking distance to town. Highly suggest this resort. We will be back!
