Had a wonderful stay - the hotel staff are amazing.
This was our first trip to Mexico and also our first ever stay at a RIU. We liked the hotel's location in Playacar - it felt very safe. We also liked being able to visit the other RIU hotels along the road. Firstly, what many other people have commented on, is that the hotel is well overdue a refurbishment. This is a very impressive hotel structurally. We loved the colonial feel to the hotel. The rooms were always very clean but you can tell that they need modernising. There was an issue with noise from other rooms to the side and from above also. The pool area wasn't good to be honest - lots of missing tiles, sand on the bottom of the pool, lights hanging out and my son did cut his finger on the edge on one on the pool tiles. Refurbishment works are imminent for the whole hotel and the plans sound impressive - I just hope that they don't make the hotel TOO modern and keep a lot of its existing character. We used to sit on the loungers on the beach so we could sit under the trees - the only problem with this was the constant touting of the beach sellers. On one day I even got offered marijuana and cocaine!! The hotel really does need to stop this from happening. I go there to relax, not to be pestered all the time. Only other point to note was the birds that get into the buffet restaurant and fly around. It didn't happen everyday but I didn't like this when it did happen - it got bird dropping on me twice! Now for the good bits :-). Firstly, the staff in this hotel are absolutely brilliant. From the entertainment staff - to the staff in the bars - to the guys who bring you drinks around the pool/on the beach - and not forgetting the exceptional staff & managers in the restaurant - YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. Nothing was ever too much trouble for any of them and they all go out of their way to make sure your happiness is key. It was our daughter's 18th Birthday whilst we were there and what they provided for our evening dinner that day was top class. Thank you for everything to did for her! The hotel rooms and public areas are spotlessly clean. We loved the reception & piano bar area. The gardens that you walk past down to the pool/beach area are lovely. There is a vast array of food on offer in the buffet restaurant - something for everyone in there. We did try some of the other restaurants in the hotel. The Brazillian was good, the Mexican not so. The steak I had in the in Chillis restaurant on our final night was the best in many, many years (shame we didn't try this restaurant out sooner) - so I give this a huge recommendation! This is a really, really nice hotel but it does cost quite a bit more that the other RIUs in this area. I can only think that after the refurbishment works have been completed in December that it will be even better. I just hope that I get another opportunity to come back.
Excellent Hotel, food, facilities, beverages, fine dining restaurants, polite and kind staff... Nothing lacking. Although very pricey, worth a second visit ! However the excursions were rather expensive, and also the scorching July Sun decided we enjoy the resort to the fullest !
Celebrating wives birthday and vacation
Excellent all around hotel super nice with great pool and activities. Food excellent from breakfast to dinner. Great shows and beach a few feet away, some seaweed but besides that grea. The service excellent from bar to restaurants
Just returned from a our annual family vacation. I can see why this place was closing for remodeling. I chose this hotel because we stayed at the Rui in Puerto Vallarta last summer and it was absolutely gorgeous, service was excellent and the place was spotless. This one was not well kept and the pool was horrible. We were at the pool early each day and the pool sweep was broken on the second day. The pool was never cleaned after that. Tiles were loose and about 2 inches of sand was in one end of the pool our entire trip. The lights were falling out of the side of the pool and then they finally sent a guy with a broom and dust pan to sweep the sand from the bottom of the pool! It didn't work. The only highlight was the bar service by the pool. We also purchased and excursion to Cozumel. There was a problem with the credit card machine, the transaction didn't go thru so another one in our group put it on their credit card which went thru, next thing you know, the original charge went thru, so it was charged on two different credit cards. Still waiting on the credit from AMSTAR.
Good but not Perfect!
I took my family of 5 here in the last week of July 2019 and had a wonderful time despite the drawbacks towards the end of the trip that are still lingering after we've been home for a few days. Service and amenities were exactly what we've always expected from RIU. The cleanliness was a slight step below what we've been used to at RIU Palace resorts. The seaweed on the beach wasn't the best but you can't blame RIU for "Nature" happening and they did an excellent job at keeping it clean daily so we could make the best out of the beach. My complaint is that 2 days before we were scheduled to leave, I fell ill. I had some pretty strong stomach pains and just general discomfort with a horrible case of diarrhea. I couldn't go out and do anything longer than 30-45 minutes without heading to the bathroom for a 20-30 minute stop (I apologize for being too graphic). I thought it was just an isolated case at the time but as we all arrived home, the other 4 family members have come down with the exact same thing (including my young 3 year child). Their cases started 2 full days after mine......however, mine is still going and it's now been 6 days straight. My wife kept mentioning that much of the fruit/food in the buffet tasted and smelled like "chlorine". I didn't think much of it but possibly the hotel discovered their was an issue and attempted to "treat" the food. I would go back to another RIU, but definitely not this one.
