Wonderful & Amazing holiday in Punta Cana!
We had a great stay in this fantastic RIU PALACE hotel in Punta Cana. Everything was just great. Please note we had this holiday in 2016, before the refurbishment. We certainly recommend this hotel. Even the kids loved it, food was super, beach was amazing. Staff super!
Punta Cana Paradise, Practically Perfect Place
Wow! Just back from this place, and can honestly say I've never had a holiday like that before. I must temper this review with the fact I have never been to the Caribbean before, so may have rose tinted spectacles on. We arrived on a Sunday, after a rather pleasurable 8 hour flight with Tui on a 787 dreamliner. Plane was clean and modern, but i guess that doesnt really relate to this hotel. Anyway I digress... It was a 45 minute transfer here from the airport, and we arrived at check in around 7pm. There were 3 couples in front of us so i was a little surprised it took best part of 30 minutes to check in which is not typical of the RIUs we have stayed in before. We were checked into a room, but when we opened the door the room had not been cleaned or made up from the previous guests which was a shock. After a long walk back to reception we were allocated another room, this time it was clean and made at around 8pm. Room was clean and made every day, fridge stocked with that oh-so-delicious 'Presidente' beer that I started a love affair with while out there. The air conditioning was pretty good too and we even got a limited view of the sea which we were not expecting. Now, onto the hotel itself. The hotel is presented well. It is clean, modern and well kept. With a nice selection of pools- one has a volleyball net and football (soccer) goals in and balls supplied. There is an old ping pong table for you to use, and the swim up bar is good. Beware the swim up bar- we happily say in the water drinking Gordons and Lemonade (my favourite) and didnt realise wuite how drunk we were until we went to get out! There are 5 'a la Carte' restaurants to choose from, varying in quality from the fusion restaurant which we found to be good, to the japanese (just not to our taste but pretty good if you like that sort of thing) to the steakhouse who cant cook steak anything other than blue, or well done, and ruined the lobster by overcooking it. The room service was terrible. the menu was very limited and sandwiches were stale, croutons in the salad soggy, but the fruit platter was nice. The buffet was great morning and night, and the BBQ chicken by the pool is to die for! The beach was clean and we did not see much seaweed which is mentioned in the other reviews. If you fancy a treat get up early and watch the sun rise in the mornings. again there are volleyball courts and football goals on the beach to use, and there weren't too many people pestering you to buy things from them. NB if you face the sea and walk to your right along the beach, you will come across the bent palm tree (in the above pictures) and the PUNTA CANA sign (again pictured) which make for great photo opportunities. The sea seemed a little rough while we were there so I wouldn't advise allowing very small children in, and there wasn't a lot to see with the snorkels we brought with us. If you sit near the bar, sometimes they will take orders and bring you drinks to the beach, don't forget to tip! ICE CREAM! although they advertised there was ice cream available, it took 3 days to figure out you have to ask in the coffee shop for it because it is hidden in a chest freezer, but it was pretty good. You have to pay for the pool table and football table in the sports bar which i wasn't really prepared to pay $3 a game for (£1 if that in England) but otherwise Sports bar was good and had a decent enough atmosphere. Staff were all very helpful and polite- something which wasn't emulated on the excursions so much so big thumbs up for that. Dont forget to tip people!!!!! entertainment was OK but we found the Bamboo to be more lively and the shots they made were way better. Drinks- Drinks were very good if you asked for the genuine brands. Smirnoff, Gordons, Imperial rum, and Jack daniels all available, but if you don't ask you will get 'classico' gut rot. Most of the cocktails were slush with alcohol in which got sickly after a while. As mentioned previously, the Gordons and Lemonade was a particular favourite. Would have loved to give 5* but there were just a few bit that let it down. Very good holiday, and would stay here again if i ever came back. Special shoutout to the hotel manager, who i saw all around the hotel sorting issues which was nice to see. I didnt get his name but he was very tanned thin white bloke with, black hair- so if you read this good effort!
As RIU Class diamond members we were upgraded to a sea view room on the third floor on arrival, which proved to be absolutely perfect for our three week stay. The only disappointment with its location was that in order to reach ground level we had to negotiate 72 steps. There was a lift one block away (around 100 meters) but this proved to be out of order several times. However, it proved to be good exercise in order to work off the extra kilos put on consuming the excellent selection of food and drink. There were also two more lifts three blocks away which took you down to reception and the main alcohol and coffee bars. The theme and main restaurants were situated one floor down from these, whilst the sports bar was on the same level. The beach restaurant doubled as the steak restaurant after 1800. The spa could only be reached by passing out of the main entrance down stone steps to ground level. Care has to be taken on the steps down to reception from the rooms as these are completed in highly polished marble as is the reception and bar areas. There are three pools one swimming one drinking and one sports, water was warm in them all. The sea was reasonably safe and warm, although there was a distinct undertow at times. The animation team in general were excellent and kept guests entertained throughout the day. Our thanks go to Miguel in particular who more or less adopted us for his yoga and dancing classes. The RIU Party entertainment program was awesome with two afternoon sessions and two evening sessions each week. Don’t miss any of them. The main buffet restaurant had a large selection of different cuisines which even after three weeks proved to be really good, thank you chefs. There are also Spanish, Japanese, and Italian as well as the Steak house for Turf and Surf. Of these the Italian proved to be our favourite. Alcoholic drinks are to international standard, with wines served from the bottle during meals., whilst soft drinks or beer can also be ordered. Our thanks must go to the waiting staff for their dedication and constant attention, especially Marco. Finally our thanks go to the under manager Alejandro Moran for his kind attention throughout our stay. He can be seen from early morning till late at night keeping his finger on the pulse so to speak, nothing seemed to escape his attention.
We stayed at Riu Palace Punta Cana April 2017 so we are a little delayed with our review but better late than never I guess! We’ve also looked this up more recently for another trip and can see that it has been refurbished so probably even more better now than when we stayed. The staff were amazing and so accommodating! Especially the entertainment team, they were non stop the whole two weeks we were there and pool activities and the nightly entertainment never did disappoint. We have since been to many different Caribbean islands including The Bahamas and Bavaro beach is the most beautiful beach we have ever seen. It’s also better having access to this beach for the whole two weeks we were there. Food here was great and there was such a wide variety at the buffet, something for everyone. Definitely recommend this hotel for everyone!
We my wife and I went from Feb.5 to 12 for a week. The weather was great at about 30 degrees Celsius every day. The hotel was very clean and beautiful. The bartenders were very good and didn't stand with there hands out for tips. We did give some tips. The dining room staff were very good. They jumped to serve us without us asking. If your water or wine glass was half empty they would come to fill it. The food was very good with lots of variety. All kinds of meats. We did not like the steak house restaurant at all. The service was horrible. We had to wait very long for everything. The lobster was over cooked. I think it was more the fault of the manager. The workers were good but the manager or head guy didn't have a clue. People who came last were helped right away and many couples who were first were left waiting forever. Many walked out before being done as we did. We also went to the Japanese restaurant. It was very good. The service was very good. Over all the hotel is very good. However if you go you should probably bring your own face cloths for in the shower. As a 5 star hotel they act less than 1 star hotel by us. We started out with 2 face cloths the first night and they took them away. We didn't get any back till 3 days later after complaining to the office for 2 days. Then they took them away again and left1. If we go again I will cut a hand towel in fourths to solve that. Over all the hotel and staff are very good. We would go again.
