    Amazing stay

Just returned from a week stay with my husband at the Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun and we had a wonderfully relaxing vacation. Our main reason of the vacation was for relaxation only, no excursions or activities. We just wanted to chill on the beach and decompress. I did a lot of research and pieced together a lot of reviews before choosing this hotel so I will try to address as much in my review as possible. This was our first stay with a Riu property and we stayed in the Jacuzzi suite on the far side of the hotel. Due to other reviews, I specifically requested a room on the far side of the adult villas and theater. Although we did not bring our children on the trip, I would not recommend booking the adult villas. They are only three stories high so the views are not the best. Also, you are very close to the theater which is quite loud until 10-11pm and they host a dance party on the beach right outside of the adult villas; if you like loud thumping music and flashing lights in your room then go ahead and book an adult villa. The additional restaurant and adult only pool didn’t sway our decision to stay in one of these rooms. Instead, book a normal room and I highly recommend the Jacuzzi suites with their much larger balconies. We stayed in room 808 and had amazing views. I think the rooms ending in 07 have an ocean and lagoon view; I prefer the rooms ending in 08 with only pool and ocean views. Our room was well maintained by the staff and we had no issues with maintenance or anything breaking. The small refrigerator in the room is not super cold but keeps your beverages at a cool temperature. I wouldn’t use it to store perishables. The AC is adjustable but I was still a little chilly at night; there is a thin blanket provided. We kept the AC on at night and did not leave the balcony door open. The room is tiled so can get condensation (slippery warning) from the humidity if you leave the balcony door open. The bathroom area was plenty spacious for the two of us, a separate room with a toilet and a wonderful rain shower. The water has a slight smell to it but just something you get when traveling abroad (we have had the same type of smell when traveling in Europe). Remember to use bottled water when brushing your teeth. The only issues we had with the room may have been personal as we thought the mattress was a little firm, the pillows and sheets were not to our own personal standards. The towels were big and just fine for us. We used the breakfast room service once; you have to pick a 30 minute window for delivery. We decided it wasn’t worth setting our alarm to make sure we were up. Rather, my husband would just go down when we naturally woke up and would bring up a carafe of coffee instead. We did not use the room service for any other times, the menu is rather limited and we didn’t get hungry other than our normal meal times. You can also access the 24 hour sports bar for a limited number of food options if you get hungry at night. We spent most of our time on the beach near the adult villas and the Tobago bar. This bar didn’t have as much activity as the others so it was always very easy to get quick and friendly service. The other bonus of this bar are the attached bathroom facilities; no need to walk far! There are five pools (one adult only mentioned above) with 2 heated and 2 unheated. We did not use the swim up bar as it was very crowded, loud and kind of gross with people spilling drinks in the water. We also didn’t use the activity pool; as mentioned above, our goal on this trip was relaxation only: not excursions, activities or making friends/small talk with anyone else. The pool we used the most was the infinity pool which is unheated. I spent most of my time going into the ocean which was about the same temperature as the unheated pools. I saw someone complained about seaweed. We saw staff hauling it up from the beach but really people, it is the ocean and there is going to be some seaweed. The staff at the hotel went above and beyond to keep the entire property clean. We were amazed at how much and how often staff was cleaning: bathrooms, hallways, outside paths, pools…everything was spotless. The bar and wait staff are very accommodating and friendly. After a few days, the wait staff would see us come in, greet us with a smile, direct us to the tables we previously used and would remember our drink orders. I think it helps that we were very generous with tips for the cleaning staff as well as the wait staff. Don’t be a jerk, leave a nice size tip for everyone that helps you. It probably also helped that we were not loud and demanding like other customers. Treat others as you wish to be treated and it goes a long way. We tried the steakhouse twice and the Japanese restaurant but otherwise ate at the buffet. There is so much to choose from at the buffet and the specialty restaurants have a very limited menu. I have a very delicate stomach so I mainly ate fruits, vegetables and breads with a few meats here and there while staying away from most dairy. I had no problem finding variety even with a self-imposed restrictive dietary choice. I have noticed others complaining about the quality of the food. Yes, it is a little bland but they have to be very cognizant that people (coming from all over the world) have very different tastes in their seasonings. The only complaint I would say is that the temperature of the food needs to be a bit hotter; by the time I made my way back to the table, the food wasn’t always as hot as I would have preferred. My husband ate all kinds of food, including the meats, and had no stomach issues. The alcoholic drinks are served strong so just be aware….again, we tip generously so we may have received more than the normal amount. Again, we did not take any excursions or activities outside the hotel. We did walk to the OXXO convenience store (take a left from the hotel, about three blocks away) for Diet Coke and Sprite as the hotel is Pepsi only, our own personal choice. A few days later we discovered if you take a right out of the hotel, there is another convenience store a little closer in between the Palace Peninsula and the Caribe. We did not bring our children so I can’t speak to how this hotel would be for kids. There seem to be plenty of activities for the under 12 crowd. I don’t think our children who are in their early teens would have much to do except go in the pool or the ocean; we probably would have done more outside the hotel if we had brought them on vacation. They may have liked the night beach party or the pool foam party; however, that wasn’t what we came on our trip for. Am I happy with our stay and recommend? Most definitely, especially for anyone who wants to relax and chill. Would I return? Yes, if we were to go to Cancun again; however, we like to travel to different places so it isn’t very likely that we will be back in Cancun anytime soon. I am giving the property a four star only because I can’t give a 4.5 star and a 5 star would be nearly impossible to obtain as that means there is NO room for improvement.

    Adult Villas, Alcohol, Vegan Food

The adult villas are separate three-story buildings from the main high-rise with its own pool, private bar, members only restaurant and close proximity to the beach, definitely worth staying there versus the main building! Although they had a lot of fun drinks, we didn’t like the beer (no US domestics) and the lack of premium liquor brands. Tons of vegan food options at the buffet day and night. The Japanese restaurant made me a special bowl with rice, tons of sautéed veggies and tofu, really delicious! The private restaurant at the adult villas called Kulinarium had a quinoa veggie dish that I ordered without cheese, very bland. Attached are some pictures of the vegan food. The first one is from the Japanese restaurant and the others are from the buffets.

Time to take a break from the Riu

We stayed at the Riu starting Nov. 21/2019 our first few days were okay nothing exceptional and a few incidents ie. Our fridge and Safe not working but repaired in both cases. On the 27th after supper we went up to our room rather then go to the show and decided to listen to the show for a short while from our balcony prior to bed. During this time we had our sliding glass door open slightly and after a few minutes decided to go to bed all we had on for lighting was the lights above our bed so did not notice any condensation on our floor. Once in bed my wife wanted to double check she has locked the door on her way their she slipped and fractured her Femur in 4 places. She was in terrible pain and when I turned the lights on the floor was wet as if someone had mopped it and it hadn't dried. I immediately went to the front desk as I needed a Manager level and someone who coukd speak relatively good English. They tracked down a assistant manager and she came up and before calling a ambulance apparently you need to call a Doctor his first words when he arrived were it will be $150.US she also called housekeeping to come up and DRY the floor. The Doctor looked at my wife who was in terrific pain saying yes she needs to go so an ambulance was called and off to a private hospital where she ended up having a 10 inch plate with 10 screws and 4 plus days spent in the Hospital frankly ruining our vacation. While in the Hospital I spent 2 nights with her and back and forth to the Hotel I asked about a courtesy vehicle or ride was told to take the bus. Buses aren't below me however it was quite a distance and no direct bus. When we did arrive back we were told they were going to charge us for the wheelchair which honestly should have been condemned it was old and the leg would not elevate. Our Sunwing Rep. Managed to talk to someone and we weren't billed. While back at the Hotel you think we would have been visited by the General Manager or Hotel Manager to see how my wife was and or even a bouquet of flowers to show they cared but nothing, I should say many of the staff below mgmt. Seemed to care more and were helpful. Anyway day 14 after my wife suffering for the last 8 Sunwing were kind enough to arrange Special Transportation and assisted us through the Airport and assisted us back in Edmonton to our car. Once back I honestly thought after a couple of weeks she would maybe have someone reach out to see how she was doing not a PEEP from Riu or their Customer Service/Care Dept... SAD! This was our 4th stay at Riu Hotels so quite disappointed about their lack of caring. I rec'd a Survey about a month after with 3 faces so I clicked on the Unhappy Face and wrote why we were not Happy. Weeks went by and after 4 email requests nothing so I sent a note to Complaints at Riu. Wow the response was condescending to say the least the lady said they don't respond to ratings so my question is why have them just for show? I clearly rated unsatisfactorily you think someone would care enough to try to find out why and maybe try to resolve. She further stared that all staff warn customers to not have the air on if the sliding glass door is open this was NOT the case nor did we notice any posting in the room. She further insulted us by saying if we want compensation we should go to our Travel Medical Insurance what kind of response is that? Thankfully we did have Medical Insurance Coverage but does RIU not know how to apologize, care and respond to emails in a less blunt way. I do not even open emails anymore from Riu and have unsubscribed. Very disappointed in the accusations that we were told and it was our fault. We are seniors and responsible I assure you if we were told we would have adhered too. Interesting our Sunwing Rep that visited us everyday at the Hospital indicated that over 50 percent of tourists visiting the Hospital were a result of slips and falls. Hotels need to do a better job of informing and posting this information. My wife was told the other day that her road to recovery will be at least 12 to 18 months. We have a 2 storey and she has yet to be able to get upstairs to sleep or shower she sleeps in a lift chair we bought her and fortunately her mother lives in a condo with a elevator so she can shower their. I worked in retail for over 35 years last 25 as a Manager a big part of Customer Service was taking care of Customer Concerns RIU YOU GET A FAILING GRADE!

    Riu Palace Peninsula

My clients ( husband and wife) went to the resort and because there is no warning about floors will become slippery when balcony door is open. My one client fell and broke her leg in four places. Not only did the hotel tell her when they asked for a shuttle to take her to the hospital to take a bus, they did not care at all. The hotel manager did not check on them after they returned from her having major surgery or offer any kind of help, upgrade to a room that would be easy for her to get to, send someone with them that could speak the language ect. The hotel did nothing for them, were not concerned and brushed it off. I am totally disgusted with the hotel and management and shocked that this was not important to them. As a Travel Consultant ( agent) for 20 yrs I sell a lot of travel and have never had a client so dismissed and cold lack of caring. We are a large agency and this has been shared with our staff and we will not be selling Riu resorts!
