Great Place to Stay in Mexico
We enjoy staying at the Riu in Puerta Vallarta. The view and the rooms are great!! We have been staying here for 5 years. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. The food at all the restaurants on the premises are great.
Don’t get me wrong Hotel is great although it has go down from last year, service is great, pool is nice, great if no small kids around or at least parents keep them behaved, there should be no glass around the pool twice people broke glass around the pool. Food is good although same thing every day gets tiring. Management should tell people that there is danger of belly fish and sting ray in the area. Almost every other day someone will get stung. ***The worst part is, if you are staying on the N/W upper floors you’ll have loud music until 1:30 in the morning coming from the hotel next door, I called every night for 5 nights the reception sometimes twice to let them know, they did not do anything about it, at least it felt like it, they suggested to move to a lower level on the other side but we refused to go from 7 floor to the 1 or third I suggested for them to give us the center building they said that there would be an extra charge, they should have taken that extra charge since it wasn’t our fault that they didn’t keep neighbors music down*** So if you stay at this hotel stay on the East tower, cause management won’t help you.
Our 6th 3 week visit in 3 years
It is difficult to put into words the place this Hotel has in our hearts, From the moment we arrrived we were made to feel more like family than guest. As soon as we arrived, Bell Boys Alex, Jamie, Jimmy and Oscar, the Front Desk Manager all warmly welcomed us back, which helped wash away an 18 hour journey from home in England, Check in was quick and we were soon shown to our Suite, which had been well prepared and contained a welcoming bottle of sparkling wine, home made chocolate's and a small gift. Since then we have received very attentive service which is a great credit to Director Alexander and Food and Beverages Manager Victor, who can be seen interacting with guests and staff from early morning till late evening in all areas of the hotel. Captain's, Ulysses, Del Toro, Alfredo, Jeronamo, Regina and Alicia, all provided an excellent and welcoming service. Our favourite restaurant was the Buffet where Head Chef Rogelio (Pat) and his team provided a large selection of well presented and excellently cooked food that should suit all tastes. Waitress Cheri provided us with a wonderful service at both breakfast and lunch and in the evenings we were looked after very attentively by Captain Montoya assisted by either Cristela or Miguel. Our favourite bartenders in the Colibri Bar were Octavio and Noah who provided the most wonderful international brand drinks. We already looking forward to returning again next year.
Great experience - Thoroughly enjoyed our 5-night stay
Family of four from the US (Boise, ID) stayed here for 5 nights during US Thanksgiving week (late Nov 2019). Family included: mom and dad (mid- to late--40s), 15yo boy and 10yo girl. Visited Caribbean side of Mexico (Now Sapphire in Puerto Morelos) two years ago - and loved it. The bar was quite high for this trip. And for the most part RPP met or at times exceeded expectations. We had a wonderful time. Here's the punchline: IGNORE the vast majority of bad reviews and continue with planning your vacation to this resort. I really cannot come up with any significant complaints at all. Yes, there were a few things that the hotel could do better (more below). I guess any review has to be tempered with a "value" component. Meaning, if you are paying full rack rates, then yes, hold off. But assuming it's a reasonable rate, DO IT. You will have a wonderful time at this beautiful beach resort. As others have commented, the hotel itself is basically immaculate. The grounds - though compact - are quite beautiful. Staff are constantly cleaning and/or touching up. Though I personally prefer a layout that's more "spread out", I cannot knock the condition of this resort. Workers cleaning/vacuuming the pool each morning before it opened. Quite lovely in all regards. But rather than re-hash what so many have said before, let me touch on a few points in three different sections: 1/ What the hotel does quite well (will be brief) 2/ What the hotel needs to improve (why I give 4-stars and not 5-stars) 3/ Things that are a bit "odd", but didn't have a huge impact on my rating (but I can see how others might perceive as negative) Here are some of the strengths of the hotel - granted, some of these could be considered basic: . Room layouts - especially loved having 2 sinks in bathroom . Walk in shower - our room (1072, 3rd floor in US parlance) had excellent hot water and shower pressure . Mini bar regularly stocked . Room regularly cleaned (no turn down, did not bother me) . Resort and room cleanliness (very little musty smell, if any) . Free use of non-motorized ocean "toys" at Scuba Caribe . Frequent pool service . Loved the poolside grill for lunch each day . Breakfast and dinner buffets were AWESOME. I'm not a big buffet guy, but this was hands-down the best dinner buffet I've ever visited. We did it TWICE for dinner, it was that good. Bruno at the breakfast buffet was a rock star - let us practice our Spanish and took great care of us! . Beach was lovely - very few rocks, and absolutely ZERO SEAWEED Things that could be improved: . Beach drink service was quite spotty (when busy, there could be a long wait) . Though I loved poolside grill for lunch, it was not uncommon to run out very, very quickly - so get in line asap . If eating lunch on the beach, dirty plates are going to pile up - don't expect them to be picked up until after 5p (due to aforementioned beach service) . Food was a little hit-and-miss. Overall was good, not great. As I said, dinner buffet was shockingly good. La Toscana (steakhouse) was mostly good, but the appetizer selection (seafood ceviche-type dish or salad) was quite limited. Guacamole (Mexican) had mix of good and bad. Apps are self-serve/buffet style. Good variety, quite tasty. Entrees are served a la carte. Fajitas great! Red snapper, not great. Kyoto (Japanese, but not hibachi style) was possibly our favorite! (But I confess we were still a bit hungry after, so we grabbed a couple tacos plus better desserts at the buffet.) Did not eat at Krystal (Fusion gourmet, no guests under 12). . Entertainment team was a dud for us. We absolutely LOVED the team at Now Sapphire and connected with each and every one. No such connection here, though we tried. Because of that, we never quite felt like "part of the family". . Related, activities during the upcoming day would be posted in the lobby. But it was not uncommon for us to show up, and there was no one from the entertainment team there to coordinate. While not completely uncommon in Mexico (some call it part of the charm), it was a bit disappointing the rate at which planned activities or events were just disregarded. . Towel game was absurd. The premium seats were those at the west end of the pool, facing the ocean. Every single one gone before 7a. Every day. It was possible to get shaded seats after 7a, but plan on being 2 or 3 rows back from pool. . Speaking of towels, RPP, go with no towel cards needed. That could easily be part of the "luxury" vibe. AMResorts found a way ... just sayin ... . Great that we could use Jalisco and newly re-opened Vallarta properties ... but I was SHOCKED that we COULD NOT USE RPP TOWEL CARDS at the Jalisco. Was told in no uncertain terms that we had to pack towels from RPP to the Jalisco if we wanted towels. That's just silly. Things that are a bit odd - some might find them negative: . Bathrooms near pool really are not far away. I don't fully understand that complaint. However, the fact that they are down a set of stairs is a bit strange and slightly inconvenient. . Breakfast buffet was quite unstructured. I'm used to the format where you show up, are seated, meet your server, then go get your food. Seemed to be that you grab your seat, hope a server sees you (for coffee, drinks, whatever), and go get your food. Be sure to leave some personal items at the table so no one takes your place. Yeah, a bit strange, but once you know it, you can manage. . No way to get to rooms without going through lobby. Would prefer not to prance through the lobby in swimwear / tanks / flips. Not a major deal, but having a less conspicuous route to rooms would be nice. . Hard-core checkout at 11a felt a bit early. On the plus side, the changing rooms off the lobby - complete with showers and towels - were a very nice touch. Though it means planning ahead in terms of how you're going to change clothes. . Acoustics at the theater were a bit rough. But you're not exactly getting top tier performers, either. Just have realistic expectations. . The rooms themselves are a bit slow to cool down. We set thermostat to 21* C, and by early-evening, AC was struggling to keep the temp there. . Pool did get a little cloudy by end of day, due to heavy use. . In general, English just a little less common/fluent here vs our experience on the RM side. Not an issue, but it did help that I know a handful of words/phrases. All in all, we really loved our time here - we were so sad to leave. That's the sign of a great experience. There were just a few small things that prevent me from giving 5 stars. But I'll say this: I would have ZERO HESITATION in recommending this resort to family or friends. Someday we'll be back, but probably want to try a couple other properties first.
