Hotel Overview

Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty à la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the à la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guest rooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

    Like a visit to heaven

Without exaggeration this resort has everything you ever can dream of. I´m so very happy and thankful for being able to visit this paradise ´Riu Palace Mexico´, for four times during a period of one and a half years (august – 2022 to April – 2024). And the reason why I return is quite simple: It´s truly a Paradise. The location is at one of the most beautiful beaches I´ve been on in the world. The weather, temperatures at land and in the water are perfect as well. During my stays at the resort (August, Mars, October and April) there have been warm in a pleasant way with comfortable breeze. When there is rain it seldom last for very long and if it exceptionally does it never gets cold. Rooms and buildings are spacious and carefully furnished. You get the feeling of being a guest at a huge Palace. Entertainment is very good and as I see it there is something for everyone at least one of the activities/performances during the day/night. The entertainment staff are gorgeous and most skilled in performing fantastic shows as well as meeting you in the most attentive and lovely way during daily activities. Now we come to the food and drinks which are main subjects (together with beach + sea), for me during vacation. Here you will find yourself being placed in ´Food – heaven`, with buffets morning, lunch and dinner with a quality that even chef´s at Tv – show´s like ´Top Chef`, would see like a big challenge. In other words, the food is soo delicious and presented in almost an artful form. If you love the taste of genuine homemade food as I do, you will find it here as well. They have spicy Mexican sauces at every meal if you want which is a luxury for me who love the taste of habanero, chile, garlic, oil, cumin, oregano, for mentioning some. You will love it. There are also plenty of A la Carte Restaurants that are very good. I have mostly been to ´La Bodega´, the Mexican restaurant and the restaurant of ´Steaks´. I can highly recommend both of them. Now, I will tell you about the drinks. They are just excellent. Even if I mostly have wine I have tasted some different cocktail’s and they are of a quality that you seldom find. Exclusive tequila and mescal you can get whenever you want and they have a very broad assortment of both. Finally we reached to the main reason why I highly recommend this resort. It´s the Staff. The super lovely, super professional, super attentive, super caring and super hard working staff at all the areas mentioned before. You are the one´s that makes, shapes and creates ´Riu Palace Mexico´, every second and every day. Everyday I´ve seen how much you put in the effort for giving your guests the best service. During this four visits I have got the huge happiness of getting to know some of the staff members a little bit more: Abraham, Ermino, Mary, Addy, Carolina, Cinthia, Adele and Noe, from the restaurants (for mentioning some of many other stars of this big staff). And by the staff members at the bar El Palmeral and during bar service during the night’s entertainment, Axel, Ermilo, Alfredo, Orlando, Jose, Anmiel, Javi, Omar and Omar-Manuel (for mentioning some of many other stars of this big staff). Though, during this stays there is one staff member that I have got the huge luck to getting to know a little bit more, Axel. My deepest thanks Axel for the best service I could ever dream of and for all lovely small talk. It simply can´t be better. So let´s tie the bag together: If you dream of a Paradise in all possibly ways and at a very high level – come to ´Riu Palace Mexico´. 😊 But beware, you will probably be heavily addicted and fall in love. That´s precisely what happened to me. Best regards, Jenny K.

Good property with major design flaws

After a 5 year hiatus, we visited Playa del Carmen and stayed at Riu Palace Mexico. I cannot say that we will stay at this particular hotel again because of several significant flaws. But let's start with positives: + Great location + Well maintained beach + Clean property + Hard working and friendly staff + Excellent food And now the negatives: - The room that we stayed has a Jacuzzi tub right next to the bed. Because of the tub the bathroom is open with no walls to separate it from the living quarters. This offers little to no privacy, especially for families. Also, there was a pink mold in the tub because it was rarely used. - The lack of public restrooms. There are only 4 public restrooms in the entire complex. If you are on the beach you need to walk 150-200 yards to the nearest bathroom. Under scorching heat the walk feels like a 1 mile long walk in Death Valley. - The lack of elevators. We only saw two in the lobby. For older folks or people with mobility issues this is a big drawback. - Weird working hours of restaurants and eating stands. If you like eating your dinner at 6PM or having mimosa on the beach in the morning this place is not for you. Overall, while we enjoyed our vacation we will not come back to this particular property.

Fantastic. Don't believe the bad reviews.

I've been here for 4 days and couldn't be happier. I read the bad reviews on Trip Advisor/Facebook/Instagram/X and can't believe people have a problem with this place. It's a dream. The service if exceptional. I've had a drink in my hand every second I wanted one. I walk into a restaurant and I'm accommodated the second I walk in. The food is excellent, the drinks are how I order them, and every single employee is happy to be here. This place is magical.... And I've been just about everywhere. If you're looking for a high quality vacation, this is the place!

This hotel does have its charms, but I can't quite recommend

I think I can sum up my review with a Pros and Cons list. Pros - What I liked 1. The property - both landscaping around the resort and the beach itself, are both beautiful. 2. The buffet restaurant truly does have something for everyone, the options seem endless. 3. I appreciate the entertainment offerings in the evenings, even if most of it was not for me. 4. The 24/7 lounge, while unmanned, was really convenient to grab a snack or one more glass of bubbly on the way back to the room at night. 5. The ability to walk to anything from an all-inclusive resort is not something I've really encountered before and I really appreciated the option to get out of the gated confines for a moment a bit. Cons - What I wished was better 1. While always friendly, I definitely got the feeling that most of the staff would rather be anywhere else than working at the resort. I will admit I don't have a concrete example I can point to on this beyond most of the waitstaff seemed to only make eye contact for a moment before moving on. 2. The rooms are definitely showing their age, there's a lot of visible patches in the doors/walls/floors etc. 3. There were a lot of hours of the day where room service was the only place to get food. For example none of the food venues were open between 11am and 12:30pm. 4. Elevators are installed only in the lobby and don't go to all floors. This may not seem like a big deal but, since my room was quite a hike from the lobby, it meant I was walking up and down 2 fights of stairs ad-nauseum. 5. This is a non-potable water resort - meaning don't rinse your toothbrush in the sink much less drink from it. I'm told that's completely common, even in the Riviera Maya, but I've never encountered it before in that area. I do want to throw in one more Pro, I'm not sure I've ever stayed at a resort that was do diverse, I met people from 6 of the 7 continents at the pool bar alone! That was so much fun! And for all you Portuguese speaking speaking from 3 of the 6 - Saúde! Would I stay again? Nope, nothing there is calling me back.....
