    A Long Way from Great

    We stayed at this resort a few years ago and had a great time. However, time has not served this establishment well. On the positive side: The estate is well maintained The pools are clean and well maintained Housekeeping is very good The entertainment team are always fun and engaging There is entertainment at night albeit not to everyone's taste Food on the whole is pretty good and well presented But the positives stop there I'm afraid. Here's why: On arrival we were deliberately shown to a room where the A/C wasn't working in the hope we would not complain Our room safe broke twice Not all the A La Carte restaurants were open The service from the waiting staff is hit and miss to say the least. A contingent are surly to the point of being aggressive so much so at one restaurant we felt very uncomfortable and left The hair dryers are useless There were a number of guests who were very disrespectful to other guests. Examples included playing loud music all night which could be heard across the resort and turning up to the lunchtime buffet and turning their loud music on whilst e eryone was having their lunch In both instances, the hotel staff did NOTHING to intervene. It's a shame. With attention to detail, staff training and a firmer line with guests, this resort could return to the establish,net it was.

    My husband and I have just returned from Riu Palace Macao. We booked this hotel based on our stay at Riu Palace in Jamaica last year assuming it would be like for like. Unfortunately, this was not the case. On arrival we were immediately asked if we would like to upgrade our room this caused alarm bells to ring! We were shown to room 3084 which smelt damp and musty. The pillows and bedding in this room were also damp and smelt awful. My husband returned to reception to be given keys to two other rooms to view. We eventually found a better room which didn’t smell of damp. So back to reception we went to be informed the room rate would incur an extra $800 dollars but they would do us a special deal as it was our anniversary of $400 providing we paid cash and not credit card. We had only taken $450 with us for tips during our stay so they eventually let us pay $300 cash and the remainder in our credit card. We met a number of other British couples during the course of our stay who had all experienced the above. It seemed to us that something very underhand was taking place. The Japanese restaurant was closed for the entirety of our stay. We were not informed of this when we arrived at the hotel or by our tour operator. Air con in this hotel is virtually non existent. The rooms air con worked but was limited. The floor in the room was constantly damp as were all our clothes during our stay. There was limited air con in the main buffet but none in the speciality restaurants, reception or bar. There was a room where the entertainment took place in the evening that had air con but again this room smelt damp and musty. The hotel grounds were beautiful green and lush and were well kept. The food in the hotel was amazing and never a problem finding something delicious to tuck into. Big shout out to Nolis in the buffet restaurant who looked after us for the duration of our holiday. He always greeted us with a smile and a high five and ensured we were well looked after. The entertainment at the resort was not our cup of tea and the entertainment team only tended to speak to guests who participated in events. The pools were lovely and the pool team were always cleaning. We stayed over by the little pool where there was a lovely breeze from the sea. Unfortunately, this is not a hotel I would return to. After what we paid for the holiday including the extra room charge we could have gone back to Riu Palace Jamaica. This hotel is like marmite you’ll either love it or hate it!!!!

    Incredible Stay! Were half of these people at the same hotel?!

    I wouldn't normally do a review but I find it very frustrating to see all these bad reviews for such an amazing hotel. I stayed at the RIU Palace Macao from June 25th - July 4th and it was absolutely fantastic!!! Honestly cannot understand some of the other reviews and wonder if they were even at the same hotel. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who gave us a map of the resort and all the info we needed. Our luggage was also taken to our room which was a nice touch. We had a beautiful room - Suite with Jacuzzi and it is so worth the extra money. Our balcony was massive and we had a lounge area, the biggest bed I have ever slept in and so comfy too! Yes, the air con may not be as powerful as other places but just remember you are in the Dominican Republic (a 3rd world country) and it does not impact your holiday - it did the job. Just wanted to say a special mention to Domingo, an amazing waiter in the main buffet restaurant. He had our table ready for us every evening with our drinks on, and on our last night he decorated our table. He really went above and beyond and made our stay, honestly the best waiter I have ever had! The staff were so friendly and really do everything they can for you. The waiter service round the pool was fab, you wouldn't have to move from your sunbed all day. Beach was absolutely beautiful, clear calm sea and you can walk along for miles. There is a bit of seaweed but they do clear it everyday. Pretty sure the water sports is included also! The food was great, a good choice for everyone and different options every evening, pizza was insane! We only tried one of the specialty restaurants (Steakhouse) as we went to see Domingo most evenings, but that was a delicious 3 course meal and nice to have the food bought to you. You don't have to book the restaurants which is great, you can just turn up depending what you fancy. Club sandwich in the fusion restaurant at lunch time is sooo tasty and such a beautiful view onto the beach. The entertainment team are fab too, always full of energy and work so hard. I really liked the lay out of the RIU hotels all in a village - you have Splash Waterworld and Caribbean Street which has a good variety of shops, and also access into some of the other RIU hotels. I would also recommend the Saona Island Trip - a fantastic day out to a beautiful island. Overall 5 star, could not fault it, best hotel I have stayed in and best staff. I cannot wait to return again one day.

    Couldn’t have been more relaxed!!!

    This place was just beautiful! From start to finish me and hubby had the best time! Our room was lovely! Literally like a block of ice the air conditioning was that high! So nice with how hot it was outside. So much so, I slept with an extra blanket! 😂 The staff were wonderful! They will do anything to help you and constantly cleaning. Like; ALL THE TIME!! Constant smell of disinfectant, but not a bad thing in my eyes. I have seen plenty of reviews on here about people moaning over the lack of air conditioning. The hotel is open, so the inside, meets the outside for the most part, so of course there is no air conditioning!!!! Yes it’s hot, it’s the Caribbean for crying out loud! There is the lounge bar which has air con and the buffet restaurant, but that’s about it. To be honest there was such a lovely breeze, we didn’t care it was so hot and humid! The entertainment staff are brilliant! They work tirelessly to keep everybody happy! They will rope you in to different activities and things going on, or will just leave you alone if you want to just relax. 3 pools. 2 quiet and 1 pool bar which has constant music playing and more for the lively patrons and the day drinkers. Me and the hubby hid in the quiet section as we just wanted to relax. Waiter service was around the pool so didn’t have to get up to get a drink. I would say tip the waiter and he will take care of you for the day. The best guy we dealt with was Adony. He worked in the lounge bar, where some of the evening entertainment was. He was brilliant, so lovely and funny! He definitely took care of us whilst we were there. Food- brilliant! Buffet was a vast selection. Krystal restaurant was so yummy and I had Lobster at the Steakhouse restaurant, which was the nicest Lobster I’ve ever had. The Japanese restaurant is being refurbished so it was closed. The only down side was the beach. Whilst there are plenty of loungers, there are no parasols, and for people like myself with fair skin you need shade and there wasn’t any, so we spent our time at the pool. It’s a shame because the beach is stunning, so it would have been nice to alternate. Yes I can grumble about the odd crack in the wall, a loose light switch here and there, but did it ruin my holiday.... not at all! I would recommend this place to anyone who just wants to get away from it all and totally relax! We had the best time and will definitely be coming back.

    Something special

    The RIU Macao was a very special hotel. The staff was extremely attentive, helpful and knowledgeable.The food was very good. The entertainment was great. Everything at this hotel was fantastic. We were booked at a different and were able ;to change our reservation to the RIU Macao and we are so glad that we did. It was truly a special place. Ing
