    Second Visit

Just back from 2 week holiday at this hotel. We were there 5 years ago and it was excellent unfortunately standards have slipped. Staff are very good, smiling and attentive, grounds well maintained but the rooms need upgraded. They are spotless but the shower, electrics and air con all need upgrades. The food is ok in the specialty restaurants but limited selection. The buffet is the usual selection which becomes repetitive but that applies to all hotel buffets. The bars were ok but smokers rule, you have to walk through the smoke to get to the lobby bar and reception which is also a smokers haven. More space for non smokers would be good as would air con in these areas. There are 3 pools, 2 restful the other a swim up which attracts noisy drunken guests. The beach is fantastic and is the best in the carabien, you can walk for miles in either direction in complete safety. Overall a nice relaxing holiday on a stunning beach. We would return if the suggested upgrades were carried out with the air con a priority.

A fabulous time with a few issues

My best friend and I took a girl's trip for 4 short but lovely days. Overall, we enjoyed the trip but there were a few issues here and there. I will start off with the Pros. -The beach is BEAUTIFUL. I mean, A+, amazing, ridiculously beautiful. There is plenty of shade to be had, even if it is a bit annoying to move your chair several times a day. The water was crystal blue and warm and calm. We spent a lot of time there! -The service overall was good. HUGE shoutout to our favorites Keudy (our beach bartender) and Wilton and Virgen at the swim up bar were the MVP's of our experience. Jose at the buffet restaurant was hilarious and lovely as well. -We upgraded to a deluxe junior suite in one of the newer buildings and it was very nice. Minibar was well stocked and it was clean every day. -We had a fun, relaxing trip and for the value it can't be beat! -The property is wonderful and I love you can see the beach from every angle. CONS -The food was not great. The best restaurant we tried was, surprisingly, the Italian one. I wish there had been more Dominican food and local specialties to try. The breakfast buffet was better than lunch or dinner. Pancho steakhouse was ok. Krystal was not good. We didn't try Japanese. -The outlets in the room were loose and only worked if you had the lights on. -When I arrived, they sent me to go look at the room by myself. There was no welcome drink and the desk was a little bit brusque with me. Was not the warm welcome I had hoped for. -There is a lot of solicitation on the beach and one of the staff literally offered us drugs. I won't say who, pot is not worth anyone losing their job, but it was surprising. -The resort is not really adults only since there were children on our end of the beach. Not a huge deal but some people would hate that. -The swim up bar had a BAD smell one day. I think people stay in there all day and just pee where they stand. Also the pools were hot. If you wanted to cool off you had to swim in the ocean (but I prefer that) Overall, not a 5 star but certainly a good time! The issues in no way ruined our great time, but I would say the food needs improvement. I know feeding a lot of people is hard, but there could be more refinement especially at the specialty restaurants. With all the incidents in the DR, I want it clear that we never felt unsafe at any time!

Please believe the news!! Dont go here right now.

I dont fault the riu chain at all I truly dont believe theres something shady but my husband and I both got very sick while we were here. Stayed 5-25 through june 1. We have stayed in Mexico 7 times (many rius) and have had tummy troubles (I even bought metronidazole on our first day from the pharmacy in preparation as seasoned gut travelers) but this was totally different. My husband got sick after the first day and i followed two days later. We both had fevers no vomiting but raging diarrhea. Like i said we have had issues before but NOTHING like this. We were both so weak i could be up for two hours and have to lay down. We had a wonderful room and everyone was soooo nice! Unfortunately we spent our 25 anniversary at the clinic with my hubby getting iv. Lol we’re glass half full kinda people so were not angry at all. Cant say enough about the staff, our maid made me cry when she saw me on our couch and said she would pray for me, they couldnt do enough for us making sure we had anything we wanted. I just cant imagine this was deliberate...I just hope they figure it out because the dr is beautiful! We even had an excursion scheduled through the hotel, rescheduled twice due to our illness and finally just called it...we expected to be out that money but they refunded all of it after they found out my hubby went to the clinic. Thanks staff!!! All the food looked great. I personally enjoyed the toast and onion soup😛.Gatorade and pedialyte are sold in the gift shop.Enclosed you will find a pic with my hubby wearing our anny t shirt! So believe...its not just hype, like I said we,ve been through the travelers diarrhea, we know montezumas revenge, this is way worse.

    Awful Trip!

My husband and I along with my in-laws spent a week at this hotel in March. We thought it was very cramped as it was between a couple of other hotels. There really wasn't much to the hotel. We have been to many Riu's in the past and this was by far the worst one. The keys are very old and big with your room number on them so anyone could take your key and get into your room. Not really much to do a night except sit in the stuffy showroom or sit outside in the lounge area. It was definitely a laid back resort. You could only have drinks in the one pool bar and couldn't take drinks into any of the other pools. We are in are early 50's and like to have things to do a resort. If all you want to do is lay around, then this resort is for you. If not, then find another resort. We spent alot of money for this trip and it was not worth it at all. The food was very cold. We ended up changing our room 3 times. I am a coffee drinker and most of the other resorts we have been to, you can go to a coffee bar in the morning for a specialty coffee, the coffee bar at this hotel didn't open until 10am. That was a real bummer for me. Overall, I would not recommend this resort. We picked this hotel as it was Adult Only. If we wanted to go to the game room, we had to go the resort where there was kids. I didn't pay to go to a kid friendly resort.

    Great relaxing holiday

My wife and I have just returned from a lovely 14 nights stay at Riu Palace Macau. Whilst we did agree with one or two of the negative points in previous reviews, we found these to be really small issues that didnt stop us having an amazing time. Rooms- were large and clean, with a well stocked fridge and all inclusive spirits. We had a few niggles with our air conditioning, which although was looked at 2 or 3 times, never seemed to work very effectively. Also a couple of the power sockets were loose. Pools and Beach- The main pool was clean, large and warm, we didn't use the swim up bar, but it was always popular. There is waiter service from 10am serving the pool and beach. The beach is stunning, there is quite a lot of seaweed, but the staff do there best to clear it. There are plenty of sunbeds, and not a big issue with people reserving them. Food- There is buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a large choice. There are 4 a-la carte restaurants which don't require booking. We only tried the Italian, which although good, was not as good as the buffet option. Entertainment- The daily animation team were very enthusiastic and worked hard . There are a wide range of poolside sports and games throughout the day. The evening entertainment varied in quality. The Michael Jackson and rock shows were my 2 personal favourites. Staff- always polite and helpful, yes they all appreciate a small tip, but I never felt they were waiting for one. Overall a great time was had, and we hope to visit again.
