Apr 22, 2025Resort changed with no notice or compensation
9 friends and I booked 5 rooms at the RIU Palace Macao 6 months in advance for my bachelor trip as a celebration. Upon arrival when attempting to check in I was told unapologetically that they didn’t have space at the resort we booked and that they were “upgrading” us to the RIU Palace Bavaro. We had no choice but to accept or have our entire vacation ruined. When we arrived at the Palace Bavaro the staff were again unapologetic and couldn’t explain how this would happen. On our original booking we had requested two beds in each room and when we got to our rooms all but one was a single king bed. Not only were we now in a different resort with rooms that only had one bed but this resort was also a family resort unlike the one we had booked. Families and kids are great but out of respect to those wanting a more family friendly environment an respect to our group who booked well in advance and wanted to be in an adults resort and party it up we feel like they should have gone above and beyond to make our original booking work. it doesn’t make sense to place a bachelor party of 10 young fellas in a resort like this and try to call it an upgrade. We were told several times that there were no more rooms with two beds available yet when we offered a tip to the staff suddenly rooms started to appear on their computer system, funny how that works. It’s not a bad hotel and the staff are generally good but to have an experience like this has turned me away from the RIU brand after being a class member for a number of years. They let me down when it counted most

The resort is clean, the food is amazing, the beach was possibly the best beach I've ever visited and the service/staff were fabulous! Our group loved that it was adults only and that there was drink service on the beach!! All that being said, we were generous tippers all week to bar/ buffet/restaurant/housekeeping waitstaff. This was a very pleasing resort in all aspects. Note: It would beneficial to learn some Spanish or at minimum download a translation app.

Plenty of Staff always around to help, never need to wait long!
There is so many staff in the restaurants and buffet, bars etc. that you never need to wait long for them to bring you something. Wow, this is amazing. The beach and grounds are fantastic, there is always enough food to eat although I found the quality to be 7 or 8 out of 10. That is still very good. The buffet food was very good most days for breakfast, lunch and dinner, although it was not consistent. Not enough variety with meat/protein. For example, chicken breast was only available one of the 4 nights which seems very strange, chicken is not expensive. Not much beef. Cant get a piece of cheesecake for desert most nights but they have one with bacon bits in it which I thought was gross (called smoked cheesecake). Creative but not a hit for me. Alot of different fish. One night was seafood night and we had large shrimp and rock crab legs, this was fantastic since I like them both. They have issues with the freezing air conditioning and mould smell inside the resort in bars and inside buffet seating. Rooms are very nice and renovated and did not smell mouldy but was freezing cold (16C). I come here to get away from the cold weather and now its in the bedroom! When they turned it down, the humidity built up in the room that the mirrors were fogged up. I noticed this same issue at RIU in Mexico. They should have humidifiers to remove the moisture. I will come again but wish they would fix the mouldy smell in the inside the sports bar and hemingway bar.
