I guess it’s all down to realistic expectations! We had a fabulous two weeks at Riu Guanacaste, great food, great drinks. Met some really lovely people from all parts of the world. I don’t have recent exotic holidays to compare our experience for this trip. I guess we could’ve paid more to go to a more expensive resort in the Liberia locality but wouldn’t have meant we had a better holiday.. who knows?! What we had and enjoyed was so memorable. The staff at the Riu Guanacaste were fabulous. I don’t think I have ever seen so many people working so hard with smiles on their faces all the time. It was a pleasure for us seeing the hotel so busy at the weekends, yes there were a few guests with some challenging behaviour - that’s not the hotels fault though, and it wasn’t really that awful! There were a couple of times at the pool bar where we waited to be served maybe a little longer than necessary where others got served before us but really wasn’t a problem (we were only going back to a sun lounger!), but wasn’t a 15-20 minute wait that I experienced (maybe seemed like it) we soon found a place at the pool where bar staff came round regularly so we didn’t even have to go to the bar! The hotel is immaculately clean, the decor is Spanish/moorish, taps were a bit corroded in places in the bathroom but like my taps at home, I blame the cleaning products eroding them- at least they were clean! Lots of off site trips to choose from. If you don’t want to go with your travel company for offsite trips there are people on the beach offering options. If you don’t want to go with them, just say no, they won’t pester you. So many positives, the wild life around the hotel is amazing, monkeys, humming birds, pelicans and dolphins in the bay. The water taxi to coco beach was such fun we did it twice, dolphins and manta-rays en-route. Diamanté animal conservation park and zip lines literally next door, rain forest and Tempisque river boat trips an hour and a half away. There’s so much to do.. I loved our trip.. can you tell?! If you want full on 5* pay more and go elsewhere, this was great value for what we paid, a thoroughly enjoyable trip 😊 PS take your bug spray and sun cream with you.. the hotel shop is extortionate.. $40 for a bottle of sun cream $30 for bug spray.. if you needed snacks $10 for a bag of Doritos!! Water taxi to coco beach $20 per person- there’s a supermarket and pharmacy there.. Pura Vida 🤗
Worst experience ever
My girlfriend and I booked 4 days over there from Nov 23rd to Nov 26th, expecting to have a relaxing moment while enjoying the amenities that RIU Hotels offer in their advertising (a 5 stars service that was the opposite). Unfortunately, our experience was totally different since the facilities looked neglected, the WiFi signal was very poor, the sauna for men in the spa wasn't working, the big majority of the staff was rude (especially in the buffet restaurants), giving us the impression that they were upset with the guests presence, and the only pool that they have was crowded all the time. But the worst part of the time spent in that place was the room that they assigned us: after a road trip longer than 4 hours, waiting until 3pm to get the keys, and being awake since 2 am in order to travel from our country to Costa Rica, they gave us a room where the toilet was broken, the bathtub didn't have a non-slip mat and the handler was loose, so we choose to report it but after dinner (otherwise we might be over scheduled for the meal). After approaching to the reception, a technician was sent to check the issue and he said that we needed to be moved to another room, since they need to take out the artifact and fix it, we just have to wait for the administration callback which shouldn't take 5 minutes, but, after 45 minutes of waiting we called them and the guy in charge at that time named Yadir told us to take our stuff and move down to the lobby, since he has the key with him (the way he talked was kinda disrespectful), so we did it, and he checked all our information again just like we did the first time, then he pointed us with his finger the path to follow for reaching the new room (according to him, nobody was available to help us with our luggage) just to find a dirty place, with the bed visible used, glasses filled with water at the middle, and no towels. Reason why we went back to the lobby very upset complaining about that situation but that guy Yadir told us to settle down since nobody talks to him like that (imagine it!) so, in addition, we had to argue with him about it and request a solution for all that mess, where the expectation was to have him doing that for us with an apology thay never came. After a long time waiting, we received a so called "upgrade" and we were able to rest until 1:30 am. I don't want to keep on extending with more details, but basically that's why we even thought to claim a refund and move somewhere else far away from that place. It's a shame to travel so far and find that kind of experience in a supposed 5 stars hotel which also left a bad image of a great country such as Costa Rica where the "pura vida" concept really exists, but believe me, far away from Guanacaste and the Riu Hotels.
The Worse experience ever
Travelled in February 2019 and it's taken some time to finally sit and write this review as it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, Our first impression was the grounds were pretty, so that was the only nice thing I can find that I liked about this place. Our room was on the 4th floor and the toilet was broke and overflowing from the first moment we got there, We called the front desk to be informed the whole floor had the same issue, Didn't resolve the issue. This went on for 4 days. And this was not good as my husband had an issue with his prostrate and required access as soon as required. Which we were told we would need to use the lobby , in the middle of the night. This issue got worse after 3 day and we had to seek the on site Dr which gave . him the wrong medication which worsened his condition. 24 hrs later off to Liberia to a private hospital as he needed to receive emergency medical attention. He had to have a catheter for the duration of his trip and couldn't swim or have anything to drink , it ruined his vacation. Not to mention they told us it would cost us $150.00 cab drive to the hospital in total, they charged our card for each way. I contacted Sunwing once I got back and after fiiing a claim Sunwing did nothing, unreal. unreal . Food was not great, rooms were warm beds were small. So needless to say will avoid this place like the plague. Not to mention would seek out Air Canada travel before I book again with the Carrier that takes no responsibiltiy what so ever,
Great Costa Rican getaway
Spent a wonderful week at this all-inclusive resort in the province of Guanacaste! First of all the place is HUGE and offers a huge variety of things to do and enjoy from the howler monkeys that came to visit right on the resort to the expansive pool, we enjoyed each moment! Been to this type of resort in the past but we were particularly impressed with the friendly staff and excellent food options! The buffets had excellent variety with ole ty of fresh fruit and vegetables and meats for every meal. Some resorts do not have fresh options but this one was fantastic! The staff was extremely attentive and willing to help make each experience a good one. In addition to the buffet options there are 4 restaurants in site: Asian, Italian; steakhouse, and “gourmet”. We went to all four of them and definitely liked the Italian first and probably gourmet next. The steakhouse was disappointing - the ribeye was good but those of us ordering the Maui felt it was overcooked and dry. The Apple streudel dessert was just plain bad - dry and void of taste. The Asian is buffet which was ok and while Italian was mostly buffet as well it was quite tasty. The downside of the on site restaurants was the process - they opened at 6 but you have to go line up for a spot by 5:15 or 5:30. Seems this could be done at the concierge earlier in the day. Each day one restaurant was closed but we were there long enough to get to go to all of them. Nice to have a change from the buffets but, quite honestly, the buffet food was good! The rooms are quite clean and they are constantly mopping the floors around the resort. There are many bars to enjoy and each evening different entertainment to enjoy. The team did a great job of providing shows for fun. The pool is awesome - many options of places to hang for the day! The beach is right off the resort - you should bring some bug repellent - seemed most people had bites including all of us! No big deal but smart to take it! If you go to the rain forest brewing a poncho or pay $2.00 for a super cheap one! Our rooms were above the Plaza bar and the Pura Vida lounge where the nightly shows take place which meant it was a bit noisy u til 10 or 11 pm - not a huge big deal. The mini frog is kept stocked with soda and bottled water - really appreciated! Beds are comfortable but pillows small and a bit hard so take your own if you are picky. I will write about our excursions which were fantastic. Orion was our guy to help arrange our trips - look for him in the lobby to help plan your adventures! Know you will have a blast - happy to help answer questions if you have any!
Great little winter break
I travelled to this hotel with my husband for our winter break after reading some previous reviews I was not expecting too much but was pleasantly surprised.Having visited other Rui hotel I found this to be on par with them .The rooms were average size and very clean the decoration was a little dated with the dark wood but in good order .The main restaurant was buffet with a good choice and chefs serving freshly cooked meat and pasta .The restaurant was very busy at the weekend due to locals spending the weekend at the hotel. There are plenty of bars and we never had to wait to be served .Entertainment in the evening was good with dancers and a live band each evening..The speciality restaurants were ok nothing special .The steak restaurant was visited by raccoons every evening which we found funny but to some diners were not so impressed.Big shout out to Bryan on the animation team who was so happy all the time and very engaging when doing aqua aerobics
