Riu Palace Bavaro Is A Safe Bey

Food is good. Facility is Beautiful. Layout of resort is easy. Entertainment is Good. Rooms are ok. I would definitely go back to Riu Palace Bavaro. Great for a couples trip or a group of friends. Riu Palace Bavaro is a little over priced. They have to report to issues faster and more efficiently.

    Bad experience/vacation

We sent a request through our travel agent that we need 2 rooms close to each other as we are a family with small kids. We didn’t get our request until the 2nd night of stay One room (2038) smelled bad & the other room (2034) smelled “terrible”. When we called The reception the staff said they can change the rooms on the following day as there were no rooms at 8:30pm when we arrived late due the “flight delay”. It ended up that we couldn’t sleep in “terrible smell room” and we slept as 4 people in the “bad smell room” so 2 adults & 2 kids in 1 room although we paid for 2 rooms. The following day, we were offered another room (2009) for the kids which was perfect no bad smell and in front of our room (2038). Our room still smelled bad but we decided to live with it in order to stay close to our kids room as we have a 9 years old child and there was no other available room closer to them. Two times we highlighted to the head of staff in the restaurant that the salad smelled bad because of spoiled veggies and they need to remove it, otherwise a child can eat it without noticing it is spoiled. In addition to serving spoiled food, the daily buffet in the hotel was exactly the same every day. We have been to hotels in Mexico & Cuba and they make changes in the menu. How come a guest eat the same food for 7 days with no single change in the menu? Two days before our vacation ended, my 9 year old girl got injured from the “Pool Chair”. Apparently the pool chair has a sharp edge that made a deep cut on her right foot, the little girl was not able to go in the swimming pool for the last 2 days (luckily it happened in the last 2 days & not on day one). Swimming in the sea was disgusting because the hotel cared less about the “Giant” seaweed that was not cleaned neither from the sea or racked off the sand. We saw removal of seaweed done in the next hotel beach & on our previous trip to Cuba. The room service staff were all day long, starting from 6am in the morning, talking through the Walkie-Talkie in the hallways which was so loud and annoying, it seriously woke us up while sleeping inside our rooms.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Good: Beautiful, spacious room overlooking the beach. I had reserved an oceanfront room, and it really was lovely. The balcony overlooked the beach, though the forest of palm trees obstructed much of the ocean view. It was still a beautiful balcony to sit out on, drink my morning coffee, and listen to the waves while watching the corner of the ocean visible through the palm fronds. I thought the food was wonderful. We ate at the buffet for every meal except one. I’m a vegan, and they had plenty of dishes I was able to enjoy. Their spread is enormous — every cuisine you could imagine with fun desserts every night. The wait staff was always attentive and prompt to bring drinks. We had one meal at the Japanese restaurant. I had ramen with tofu, and it was fine. Nothing fancy, but I have no complaints. The drinks are the best I’ve ever had at an all-inclusive resort. My experience with other resorts in the past is their drinks are very watered down. The drinks here are potent and delicious. Ramirez at the front bar in the evening is incredibly sweet and attentive and often alone behind the bar working hard to make sure everybody is served. He’s a gem. Both the bartenders at the middle pool (shame on me I didn’t catch their names) were wonderful as well. Very kind and personable. Nestor greeted us upon arrival and showed us to our rooms. He was really sweet and friendly — a great first impression upon arrival. Because of the room I reserved, I had access to the VIP (adult only) pools. I loooved this. The middle pool was always quiet, lots of pool beds to relax on, chairs built into the pool to feel the warmth of the sun while the water laps over you. This pool did not have a swim up bar (it did have a walk-up bar), but the other VIP pool did have a swim-up bar. That pool was slightly busier, but still pretty chill. The Bad: This resort is huge. HUGE. When we first arrived into our rooms, our welcome envelopes did not have our towel keys in them, which they were apparently supposed to have. I called the front desk and was very curtly and dismissively told “Well you need to come to the front desk to get them then” and was hung up on. I don’t mind the walk, but it’s a good trek back the front desk. And I’m not some pompous American who expects to be catered to, but his tone was very condescending. Not a great second impression seeing as I had just arrived. The rooms are not well insulated from outside noise. Unfortunately I slept terribly every night here. Every time a door closed anywhere in the building where I was staying, it would slam and echo throughout the building. It seemed like I could hear dishes clinking in other rooms, or the hallway. The first night I tried to sleep with my sliding door open so I could fall asleep to the sound of the waves, but was awoken in the middle of the night to people who were clearly drunk yelling on the beach. The building I was in was in close proximity to the main pool, and all day they blast LOUD music and scream into a microphone. I was vacationing without my kids and was looking forward to my afternoon siestas — a luxury I never get when my kids are around! The sounds from the pool made it impossible. That was frustrating. The evening entertainment is sorely lacking. They advertise that we can go to any one of their resorts (in close proximity via shuttle), casino, or disco, but quite honestly I didn’t really want to leave the resort. I’m a homebody and like to stay close, so I would have preferred more options of things to do onsite. My last night there they did have a dance show, and the dancers were incredible. But our first night there was a showing of Moana (or maybe it was Frozen?) and the second night was karaoke. Not. Good. My last night there I ordered room service. When I called to place my order, the man answered in Spanish, and when I asked in English if I could place an order, he YELLED at me ”WHAT!” (as in “what do you want?!”) When he realized I didn’t speak Spanish, he abruptly put me on hold and a different, very polite man, finished taking my order. I don’t go to other countries expecting them to speak English. Just the opposite, I put the responsibility on myself to communicate clearly with the native residents. However, I find it totally unacceptable to be yelled at for not speaking Spanish, from a person who works in the service industry at a tourist resort that caters to many English speakers! The beach was very busy and the waves were pretty rough. I came for a beach vacation, but barely spent time on the actual beach because of this. Lots of vendors, but they didn’t badger. As soon as I said “no thank you,” they moved on. Many of the employees tend to look right through you. This was my first time in the Dominican, and for the most part, they seem to lack the warmth and hospitality of other places I’ve been. This is not a criticism of their culture, but rather an observation. Pools close at 6:00pm. Total bummer. Wish they stayed open until 8 or 9:00. The Ugly: These grounds are beautiful and well kept. However, there are cigarette butts everywhere! This is NOT the fault of the resort, but rather of lazy, entitled tourists who can’t be bothered to walk their cigarette butt to a garbage can. But if I could offer a suggestion, it would be for the resort to place cigarette butt receptacles around the property. I saw a few in specific designated areas, but people smoke everywhere on the property, so if they were more readily accessible, lazy tourists may be less inclined to throw them on the ground. I’ve been to resorts where they have these receptacles, and they don’t have the problem with cigarettes being carelessly tosses to the ground. Overall this resort is okay. I don’t think I’ll be returning the the Dominican, but I’m glad I gave it a try.
