Good but I would look for others !!!!!

This is my 4th visit to a Riu Palace category, I have been to 3 Riu Palace in Mexico, and this is my 1st time in DR. So my review is comparing this Riu to others. We were a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 children with a stroller. Check in/Check out: The check in was very disappointing, no cold towels, no welcome drinks, nothing to the standard of the Palace. The reception guy was not welcoming too and the feeling was like you are checking in to a Motel and not Riu Palace. The receptionist was very distracted and was not giving us a full attention. The checkout was ok, we called the bellboy. He came quickly to pick the luggage, and it was very smooth at the reception area. Room: The room was ok, nothing wawoo. We got the 1st room which was far from the lobby area, so we complained and asked for a different one, they agreed to change it. We ended up on the 2nd floor and close to the elevator and lobby area. The room was little outdated, the children bed-cover was ripped, they never changed it. One of the alcohol dispenser was broken and leaking all the time. The housekeeping service was great, they used to make up the room 2-3 times a day, which was a good thing. Pool & Beach: The beach was soo clean, lots of chairs, no seaweed at all. And the pool area was good. No complain for both. Restaurants, Food & Drinks: The food in general was ok. Other Riu palace food was more luxurious and much much more variety and quantity. I didn’t like the A la cart restaurant, nothing attractive in their menu. No Teppanyaki restaurant. We just tried the steakhouse restaurant, one time the food was great, the 2nd time was bad. The drinks in general are ok. Service: The service was excellent, the waiters are so friendly and every few min you will find a waiter walking around the pool area and ask you if you want to drink something and similar to the beach area. Tipping is a big factor in a good service for sure. Internet & WIFI: The WIFI was free and in good reception in most of the resort. No Wi-Fi at the beach area. Shows & Entertainment: The entertainment team did a great job. Riu resorts are very famous with their entertainment programs. The night shows was not the best, but was great. If you get a good deal $$ so good to try this hotel, but I will not visit this hotel at the regular/full rate, since if I am planning to pay the regular/full rate, I would definitely go to other resorts in DR that are a real 5* and more luxurious.

    Would N O T return

My 4 y.o. is battling severe. fo od poi son ing after 6 days spent in RIU. We landed at O'Hare and went straight to the Immediate Care. My child became really sick the night before our flight back home. We came across mol dy food TWICE!! Yes mol dy FOOD!! food at the resort was horrific and some times in edible! Clogged bathroom, smelly rooms.. spoiled milk offered with the coffee.. and list of com plaints goes on and on. I've been to RIU Guanacaste which was great and I would return to that one ... RIU Palace Bavaro is a complete she to RIU hotels. Beautiful beach and water park were the only positives of the resort. Maintenance service was super fast (I bet they are used to complaints) and staff was friendly. Due to the hor rible food and my child suffering for past 4 days - I'm leaving 1 star. Hope no one else gets sick like him at that place.

    Disappointing in some ways

We chose this hotel based on previous experience of the Riu Palace Pensiular in Mexico. The staff of this hotel are the most friendly, warm and genuine people we have come to meet on our travels. There is always a smile an “Hola” from everyone you meet. Credit to the pool guy in the adults only section he always had our towels ready on the sunbeds. The grounds of the hotel are immaculate and there’s a constant stream of cleaners and gardeners who are looking after everything. Arrival, what a nightmare at the airport. Over 2 hours to get through the immigration hardly any passport desks open. However, this was more than made up for by the warm welcome we received at the reception desk when we checked in. We were offered a nice cold drink and a few minutes later we were on our way to our room. Bags arrived some 30 mins later thou. The room, we were in the villas section and on the top floor of block 4. There is no lift, so it kept us fit going up and down the stairs a few times a day. Whilst the room is clean and tidy it is showing its age and some TLC is required. The maid always left us some towel art and we kindly left her a reward for her hard work. Restaurants, I don’t know if it was a quite week whilst we were there but some of the specialised restaurants were closed. We did try the Steak restaurant (twice it was that good) and the Italian restaurant was great also. The main restaurant was great for breakfast with freshly cooked omelettes the usual range of food was available. The evening time sometimes the food was not quite warm enough for our liking and we sometimes struggled to find something different to eat. Pools, the main pool was loud. If you want peace and quiet go to the adults only section. The not so good bits, on the weekend the place was bombarded with an influx of people who have no idea about queuing up or manners for that matter. They pushed people out of the way snapped their fingers at the staff, moved tables and chairs so that their family of 20 plus people can sit together. This really put us off the whole holiday experience. The drinks are watered down or no alcohol at all. On a positive note there’s an Ice making machine on the ground floor of block 4, don’t know if there are any others located around as we did not look for them. Entertainment, on the couple of occasions we went we only stayed 30 mins or so, so but they can do better than what was on. We did venture twice to the Riu Pool Party, nice if you want a pool loud music, drinks. Great atmosphere – However why does the DJ have to swear over the microphone this is so unprofessional and if he worked for me he would be looking for another job elsewhere (Yes, I’m a DJ) it’s not called for and not required. In summary I can only give it 3 stars, the rooms need refurbishment, the food needs improvement and kept at better temperatures. The staff are great, and this comes from the Manager down, they keep the team going and motivated, they are a credit to the RIU chain. I can’t say we will return to the Dominican again, we were put of by the poorly organised airport staff which should have no bearing on you selecting this hotel. However the Riu Palace in Mexico wins hands down for those little extras that make it 5 star.

    Ok at Best

I stayed at this hotel for 7 days and it didn't meet my expectations as I thought this hotel was suppose to be a 5 star resort. Pros -Really nice beach right outside the hotel -Rooms are spacious. -Riu Party (the only good enterteiment) -Steakhouse for dinner. -Room cleaning was good Cons -Buffet food was hit or miss. The seafood was not seasoned and didn't taste fresh. -Most speciality restaurant food was a little better than buffet food but nothing to rave about. Also not all restaurants open each day. One day three restaurants were open and two serving same exact menu. -Mixed drinks are oversweeten and made with syrups not fresh ingredients. Ask the bartender for little sugar if you want a drinkable drink. -Hotel room needs some updating. Paint was chipping from the walls and the room had a musky smell. The sheets looked very old and felt rough. -Entertiment at the main stage was kind of boring and could use new acts. -Sports bar TV's do not have clear picture and you have to pay extra to play pool.
