Going for 3
This was my 2nd time to the Riu Negril and I had as much fun as the first. Checking in was a breeze and I was immediately escorted to my room. After taking a short time to settle in, I was out to get lunch and then walked the beach to see if I saw any faces from my last visit. It's normal in this industry that the employees come and go, so it was wonderful that I actually found 3 that I recognized and believe it or not, they remembered me. Here if you cannot find something at the buffet that you like you are too picky. The food is really good! And the drinks are not watered down. The Riu Negril is small enough to feel like home, but large enough to not feel crowded. The grounds and beach are clean and groomed daily with plenty of lounges, sun and shade. I want to give a shout out to some new friends: Simone, Measha and Seseka from the Renover Spa; Paul the bartender that serves courage in a glass; John Wayne at the transportation desk (thanks for keeping me company); the lady's that work in the gift shops (keep dancing); the lady (sorry I didn't get your name) that cleaned my room, thank you; Captain Jack what a big sweetheart; Tiny with the entertainment group (keep smiling lady) and if you want a great photo find my friend Akeem. Upper management remember the people mentioned above and many others are the reason guests will return. As I will return and soon. One word to the wise ONLY take the new US currency, if you have a bill older than the desk supervisor he will not cash it.
Average 3* service at a potentially 5* hotel a let down to Riu
As an ex TUI agent I have been to and sold many Riu hotels which drew me to booking this one. Unfortunately it did not live up to the normal service standards from the Riu group. On a whole the grounds, rooms and location are 5* the service at most is 2*. With the exception of a handful of staff, namely ... Doulton, paul(Tiny) and Charles ... evening bar men who give great service and make good drinks. So to sum up .. 1. Staff ... with the exception of the above, staff are not too friendly unless you tip them. I'm not opposed to tipping but tips are earned so of you're rude to me you don't deserve a tip. Restaurant staff are very slow with bringing drinks orders. We found ourselves chasing staff around just to place a drinks order. Service is a real let down.. reception is a complete waste of time. If you dare bring to their attention for instance .. your room has not been cleaned... it must be your fault as the it reason it would not be cleaned is if you leave do not disturb outside! Which I assured them was not the case only to be returned with a blank distant look. 2. Rooms ... the rooms are lovely and we had a great view. Maid service was not good, we had dirty sinks for 2 days , no toilet paper on another day, no hand towels another and last but not least no beers or tonic water in mini bar. 3. Food ... nice and lots of choice, but the food in the buffet was the same each night and didn't really make up a proper meal just more of a mish mash. A la cartes were decent apart from the Service, chasing wine after you have already eaten your starter. Also felt very rushed as there is normally a que waiting. 4. Bars/drinks ... the drinks look branded but don't taste it. Keep an eye on the cocktail making as I'm not sure why but some bar staff leave out the alcohol. I asked for a gin and tonic one day and received a plain tonic. When I questioned him I was made to feel as though it was my fault. The beach bar staff are plain rude unless of course you tip them 5. Reception ... If you dare to complain about any of the above... Be prepared to be met with ... It must be because... (You have done some) for instance .. Left your do not disturb sign up. And when you try to explain that it wasn't because your bed has been made, you just receive a blank expression. And 'it will be done tomorrow' On our final day we asked reception to arrange for our cases to be collected at 12pm for check out. This was 8am and at 11.45 we rang just to double check before we went to lunch. Our coach was due at 2.00pm and after checking the luggage room at 1.30 no sign of our cases, reception were very helpful though with this and offered us the key to go and collect them ourselves! 6. The beach ... Beach is lovely.. Be prepared to be offered lots of drugs but the locals do take no well. They are actually very friendly and there's a few beach huts offering nice cold beer out of bottles if like us you can't drink the watered down rubbish. They will even fetch it for you to your sunbed .. Perhaps they should employ them at The hotel as they gave better service than the current employees! 7... The sea... Its lovely and warm lots of fish .. There are some sting rays but they don't bother you. There is unfortunately lots of sea weed the sea by The riu palace is much clearer. But it was still lovely. 8.... Entertainment ... Mediocre 9.... Pools .. The pool bar area is filthy, there's dead wasps everywhere and a slick of oil on top we went in once and that was enough . The quiet pool is better. Overall as much as I sound like victor meldrew we did enjoy our holiday and we made the most of everything. The main let down was the service standards. It's definitely not a 5*.
The staff were all very helpful and friendly. We were attending a wedding and wanted to be nearer, room wise, to our other family members in our large party of people and it was not a problem. We all ended up in one block, which was totally convenient for child care and easy access to other family members. Activities ran all day long, and there was full use of paddle boards, canoes, etc, as well as music and fun and games around the pool. The food was excellent, there was something for everyone, at every mealtime, and also in between. Popcorn and sandwiches were available day and night, and the jerk shack was perfect if you just wanted to stay on your sun bed! The evening restaurants offered you choices from casual dining through to silver service, all at a very good standard. The rooms are lovely throughout and attention to detail has been observed. Very clean hotel, toilets immaculate. For a fun filled family holiday you cannot go wrong. Relaxation, good food, warm water filled with fish and beautiful sunsets summarise Negril for me.
I would come back, but there were some things, which impeded it to be a perfect holiday.
Pluses: - The employees are mostly very friendly - The food is very very good! - Very clean - No disposable plates and cups on the beach-bars. Though indeed there is disposable cutlery Minuses: - No signs or informations, to inform guests to take care of the sealife and the seagrass-fields and not to take the starfishes and other animals out of the water. One guest even told me he had asked at the reception, if it is allowed to take starfishes as souvenir and they told him, „Yes, that’s no problem“!!! Very big minus - not longer contemporary and not acceptable! - There are traders on the beach which offer king-crabs and lobsters. These animals are still alive and are suffocating slowly and struggling for life, while the traders show them around and hold them into water from time to time, just bevor they would finaly die! This massive torture they do nearly the whole day with these animals and – too – is totally inacceptable!!! A lot oft he other guests were upset by this too. I can’t understand, that the hotel tolerates this, for I collected some information and was told by another trader, that the hotel does control, what is offered on the beach by the traders and what not! - Too much waste on the beach and in the green areas, especially straws, plastic bags from the traders and plastic-cigarette-filters. - Big parts on the beach without any dust-bin. - There are traders, who offer trips to the nearby coral reefs. These guys don’t take care about the reefs in any way.
the stay was pleasant, the hotel service was good. However, we suggest to make a better variety of fruits in the restaurants (to add mango, papaya, kiwi, berries, etc), Also, the entertainment was somewhat outdated (like an old and worn out Michael Jackson) and too noisy to the level of not hearing people talking to each other.
