RIU never disappoints.
If you are looking for a good beach, great food, terrific weather compounded by smiles from a wonderful staff....The RIU is a good bet. One is greeted by an enthusiastic and helpful front desk upon arrival. Pick an ocean side room if you can afford it as the sunset vistas will astound photo hounds. While the three pools are very clean and well kept, nothing beats a relaxing day at the beach at Hotel RIU. Be sure to find a spot near Bob bar...the rum and pineapple drinks prepared by a friendly staff will keep you coming back for more. While RIU strive to provide very good themed restaurants including Luigi and Seagull, The Island Grill where the daily buffet is served offers up a splendid variety of food choices which should satisfy most any palate. Don't forget to stop by the fresh juice bar at breakfast time, it is amazing. Some observations which may help improve the vacation experience. Small children (wearing diapers) are allowed in the adult swim up bar which may cause those seeking a relaxed drink at the swim up bar some concern. Also the never ending parade of drug dealers and other unlicensed merchants along the Bloody Bay Beach area can create a negative image for those who do not partake. Some guests (un-wisely) were actually offering food and beverages to locals who were wandering the beach looking for handouts. The free and wide variety of non-motorized excursions are a bonus as well.
Jamaica “ one love”
We were a party of adults visiting in September. On arrival after a nine hour flight, two hours to get out of the airport and an hour and half transfer, we found there was only one person on reception doing the check- in. After about half an hour she was joined by some others but this did not put us in a good frame of mind as a good first impression. The weather was very mixed for our stay, a lot of rain and cloud but also very hot sunshine when it came. The hotel is a small complex which is very well kept, beautiful garden areas and very clean everywhere. Every restaurant, bar area , beach and pools are all only a short walk from wherever you are ideal in the hot sun and torrential rain. The rooms are spacious and immaculately cleaned every day with ample wardrobe and drawer space and an adequate bathroom. The food in all the restaurants was really good and a great variety, the buffet was really good as was the Italian, gourmet and steakhouse the only disappointment for us was the Chinese. The drinks are disappointing as they are mainly local brands but that’s just our preference. The fridge in the room is stocked up and there are optics in the room too. We found the hotel quite noisy but this was due to inconsiderate guests. The hotel could do with investing in some quieter trollies used by the staff around the resort as this can be very disturbing early in the morning and whilst enjoying the pool areas they really make a racket. We were aware of the weed smell around the hotel and the beach and we were approached several times about if we wanted to buy it but it isn’t really a problem and if you say no you are not bothered any more. The beach was a bit disappointing as there was a lot of ants and sand flies both of which bite. The sea was very warm but with a lot of seaweed at the edge which isn’t cleared up. The snorkelling was very disappointing nothing much to see and it was very murky but this was probably due to the weather conditions. The staff at this hotel whether in the bar or restaurants or entertainment team who are excellent, really are a credit all round. They are so polite, friendly and above all happy you really couldn’t want more from them. Especially Giorgia in the breakfast buffet who always remembered our teas and coffee as we sat down and the lovely Ivette at the beach bar. The entertainment in the hotel is really good from the steel band to the reggae bands and the shows they provide a good variety. Would I recommend this hotel-yes absolutely but it’s definitely a four star hotel but worthy of it.

We have visited Jamaica before staying at Riu Montego Bay. I was hoping for the same experience but it was not. I understand it is the rainy/slow season but we found a "good deal" through Apple Vacations. One side note that falls on Apple Vacations but they do not have a place to write reviews anymore- Our transport from the airport to the resort was concerning. The bus was old with water from the air conditioning system dripping on all of us on the way, and it lost one of it windshield wipers. The resort was clean and most of the employees were very friendly. Food: The first two mornings no service at the tables. I had to get my own coffee and juice which I'm not above but I'm on vacation. Due to it being the slow season for lunch you could eat at the grill or get food at the jerk hut. It was the same food every day.. A couple pasta dishes, pizza, hamburger, nachos, french fries.... In the evening only one or two of the speciality restaurants were open. One night the steak house was open but when we went there we were told they had a waiting list of 30 ahead of us. So most nights it was the buffet. Again the same thing every night except one night they had a pasta station. There was very little seafood. They had shrimp one night, and the fish was full of bones. We went to breakfast early in the morning as things were empty if you went later than 8am. The food was okay at best. The beach was nice with plenty of chairs. The resort is located on Bloody Bay, not 7 mile beach. The water is very calm at the resort and great for kids. There are some rocks/grass but very little seaweed on the beach. There are areas of coral by the ropes in the swimming area so you can snorkel right at the resort. I saw starfish, an eel, and many different types of fish. The one thing about the beach that wasn't great was the drug dealers yelling at the guests as the were on the beach and walking on the paths. They were allowed to stand by the trees next to the water. We upgraded to an ocean front room. In Montego Bay our ocean front was huge and beautiful. This was a small standard room. A small bathroom that the door hit the toilet when you opened it, a double sink and a shower. No whirlpool tubs in the room. One nice thing: they have umbrellas in each room which came in very handy. It is a very small resort so not a lot of walking. If you wanted to you could walk the beach a short distance each way. If you walk to the left (facing the water) there are a lot of shops made from tarps. Overall we still enjoyed our time away but wished we would have visited a different resort. We would not visit this resort again
