Excellent hotel, food, pools, and beach! But...
I so badly want to give a 5 star review. We had 2 rooms, one for parents and one for teens. They were accommodating for first floor adjoining (daughter with health issues). The rooms were lovely, spotless, and the shower especially was excellent. We were continually wowed and awed on the trip! One of our favorite things was night swim as a family in the smaller pool between bldg 2 and 3. So much fun! The food continually was jaw dropping impressive to the foodies and the picky eater in the family. We ate at every restaurant and the buffets. Tip: eat breakfast before 8 when it’s less crowded on the deck to enjoy the crazy birds! If you’re lucky you’ll also get to see The Cat (we named him Lion King). Also, the beach is spectacular in the morning! 99% of the staff is outstanding! We truly enjoyed chatting with so many people there and were amazed at the hospitality and hard work. So very very grateful for the excellent service and wonderful attitudes! Especially everyone in dining services- never once encountered anything less than excellent. In fact, the second night we ate at the italian restaurant and I asked a woman about dairy free items for my daughter. She was amazing a preparing a beautiful and delicious meal for her. The next night she saw us at the steak restaurant and without asking, jumped right in to make sure my daughter had an excellent dairy free dinner! The photographer taking pics is a trip. We loved him and he got so many great pics. Stop by the photo hut to buy them! We didn’t do much with the entertainment staff, but they were fun. We LOVED the steel drum band- not to be missed! The frustrating things. 1. The door keys. They never worked. We were constantly having to waste time going to front desk and back for new keys. I asked repeatedly for maintenance help on doors and never got it. On day 3 they told us to make sure cards were never near phones and even with that, they still hardly ever worked. 2. Wheelchair. My daughter hit a horrible flair as soon as we arrived. I didn’t bring her wheelchair (only occasionally needed) as she was doing well. I had checked ahead of time and was told there were no rentals for the duration of the visit and front desk will escort whenever needed. There was 1 wheelchair at the front desk and it was often in use by others. I couldn’t believe they only had one! Then on day 4 I was told to ask nurse as my daughter was having to spend the majority of her vacation in the room!! The nurse was hands down the rudest and meanest staff member. I was insulted and dismissed. She also told me that there is in fact wheelchair rental for $250 cash deposit and $30/day use. We didn’t bring that much and after such an awful encounter, my daughter left crying so we continued to wait for front desk service. 3. On our last day we got the girls (expensive) massages. And guess what! There’s 2 jacuzzis hidden back there! We had no idea and had wanted one all week. 4. If you don’t like weed and the smell of it, you’ll hate it here. The dealers are up and down the beach and the air is sometimes strong with it. 5. I had asked to have minibar removed from teens room before we arrived, and 3 times after arrival. They finally did on the 3rd or 4th day. Tips: Bring more sunscreen than you think you’ll need. Also, bring your own soaps and shower products, but don’t worry about blowdryer- there’s a small one on wall. Bring baby powder to help with stubborn sand on skin If you hate sand on tile in your room, bring small broom. Bring floats, especially floating chairs. You can inflate them there You must go snorkeling! Best anywhere! Enjoy gourmet food? For the gourmet restaurant, men must wear long pants and nice shirt. Pack that. Don’t worry about packing lots of clothes. We lived in swimsuits, cover ups, hats, sunglasses, and sandals. Divine. Only needed evening outfits. And to be covered with shoes for restaurants. No coffee in room. Get it in sports bar. Would we go back- definitely!!! Just knowing more!
We love it. Very Friendly.
If you are expecting to get bathrobes, slippers, meals and drink delivered to your room, this isn't for you, so book a hotel that charges a lot more money, This hotel is everything we need for a genuine relaxing holiday! Good choice of pools... Food is plentiful and very well varied. I'm a fussy eater but never found a day when I couldn't find something tp please me! Cleaners are constantly cleaning communal areas. Bell boys are friendly, The waiting on staff were friendly. We never found any fault whatsoever. If you want a hot drink in your room, take a travel kettle and your own coffee, You can get a hot drink at some of the bars but always in the sports bar which is open 24/7. Fridge in the room was topped up every other day. Just returned from our 3rd visit to this hotel and already booked to return in the autumn. The Tui Reps for the UK, Christine and Kerry-Ann are a mine of information and will sort your problems. They are amazing ladies.
Already can't wait to return. The coach journey is around 2 hours however you do stop off halfway for a beer overlooking the sea which is beautiful. Room was good although the sliding door didn't shut all the way. Room overlooked the beach which was lovely. You do get the sellers along there but they were all really friendly, we had a chat with them, plus the guys with the guitars were lovely...one chatted to us for ages and came back the next day with some CDs for us!. We only did one trip but would highly recommend the catamaran tour including snorkeling, trip to Ricks Cafe and Margaritaville - staff were really nice and really good atmosphere. The food was also really good - I'm extremely fussy but never had any issues with trying to find something to eat. Staff were good apart from one or two within the entertainment team that we found quite rude and arrogant everyone else was amazing....biggest shout out goes to Birdman, Flava (thanks for teaching me to dance!) and the amazing Spotlight (ask him for his full name....he is brilliant!!). The nightly shows were amazing too, make sure you see them all! The only thing that let the stay down was the housekeeping as the fridge was rarely stocked up. We called reception after being at the beach the whole day they said the mini bar team had gone home and it couldn't be done until the next morning....not quite sure why but we coped. Overall, I had the best time on my first visit to Jamaica and I honestly cant wait to go back!
This hotel pictures and description are 100 misleading The Hotel is very old, dirty and smelly, the grounds, pool, the grouns, the theater. and restaurants are really run down. Besides is very dangerous cuz drug dealers trasspass the property day and night. If you need anything you're going to wait a long time or it will never be provided to you. There was no towels in thr gym, the attendants were busy working out themselves of flirting with the tourists. I will nevet book in a Riu anymore for sure.
Worst Riu ever
Been here over a week ... beach is fab .. few noisy people.. RIU can’t stop that ... some servers in the restaurants are lovely & attentive.. others ... well let’s just say your spoiling their day ... after being treated like crap in the Mandalay by the supervisor/manager we went & complained .. let’s just say he didn’t care .. next night while sat in the bar with friends a cleaner & “waitress “ came along I asked them for some napkins as our drinks were dripping all over the place.. her reply “no we’re finishing you must leave!” ... my reply mmmm don’t think so ... she then “cleaned” our table.. then threw some napkins at us & knocked my friends glasses off the table!!! ... the rudeness here is unreal !!! ... Day 8 & our mini bar has been stocked twice & that was only because we had to call reception & I’m only talking coke & Tonic !!! been out all day today & left a note saying what we would like in mixers “Tonic & coke” nowt else ... what did they leave... SODA WATER... sod all else !!! ... no bar service... no “please or thank you “ this is by far THE WORST RIU ever .... we have stayed at least 7 other RIU hotels around the Caribbean so we know the standard of service that is on offer ... WTF RUI sort your 💩 out here 😞 looking forward to going home !!
