Boring and too far from the beach
****This resort is not on the BEACH!!!! You have to take a shuttle to another RIU Property to access the beach!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was a bit disappointed I felt like it was false advertising online! This resort was very boring NOT for young people!!!!!...I would recommend this resort to older couples in the 50-60 age range. *The buffets were just okay, breakfast was the best!!!!! I survived off breakfast and french fries ONLY!!!. The so called fancy restaurants that you needed reservations for ....both me and by boyfriend go EXTREMELY sick after eating. We both spent 8 hours in pain after eating a steak and lobster meal!. *The staff was pleasant, helpful and treated me with respect. *Bar staff made amazing drinks make sure you order 2 at a time due to the bars getting packed often. *The resort is small so you don;t have to do a lot of walking to get food and poo access *The location is Playa Del Carmen I rented a car to explore the area and I'm glad I did since the resort was so boring!!!!!!!!! The food outside the resort in the city was 10000000% better!
This is not our first visit to the Riu Lupita and it just gets better every time. This was our 15th time to Mexico and stayed in plenty of Riu Hotels. From checking in, the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and clean, with mini bar and optics. The grounds are perfectly kept and tidy, the pool area always being cleaned. The staff are all so friendly, but I would like to a special thank you to Blanca behind the bar, she was just amazing. Big thank you to William, Sophia & Lydia from the animation team who constantly worked so hard to keep you entertain and getting you involved in all the fun and games. Buffet restaurant always had good selection food and impossible for you to go hungry, with very friendly waiters who constantly keep the place clean and refilling your drinks. Visited the Steakhouse at the beach club a few times and food there was very good as well. If you like a smaller much friendlier hotel then this is defiantly the place to go. We have been to plenty of big luxury hotels in Mexico but yet we still keep coming back to the Riu Lupita purely just because how friendly and special the staff make you feel. Will be back again for more soon, keep up the fantastic work. Simon & Zoé
OK...but too quiet
We bid on this resort through CoCo's Animal rescue (Fabulous organization that helps animals in Playa....please look them up and help out if you are an animal lover via donations or bidding on their online auctions)...so my friend and I decided to make it a girls only trip and left husbands at home. 1. Bar Staff and front desk staff are awesome. We paid the environmental fee upon arrival. Apparently we weren't supposed to as everything was prepaid as part of the bid. The girl that checked us in tracked us down and returned the money. Awesome. On the night of the Neon party at the Tequila the bartender at the Lupita asked us if we had eaten first before going to ensure we would be okay...awesome....then welcomed us back when we returned within a half hour (as far as I am concerned they ruined my happy place - The Riu Tequila.....will never go back...it looks and sounds like a Disco now). 2. The Lupita is very quiet....I realize this is the start of low season but still......way too quiet for us (mid 50's). Some people would really like that part of it, for us not so much....it was almost like the majority of the people left the resort every day. 3. Food. This was the most disappointing after spending many years at the Riu Tequila and staying at the Riu's in Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. The buffet was disappointing. The Mexican was downright awful. The Italian was good. 4. Room. Adequate. The room temp could technically go down to 20 C but we could never get it to that temp and the young lady cleaning our room would shut off the fan and air conditioning every day. when she cleaned the room..got back to the room and it was 27 degrees C. 5. The majority of people there were from Britain. Not an issue itself obviously as we have met the loveliest people from there over the years BUT and this makes me so angry.....they DO NOT TIP. The staff are awesome and I realize that tipping is not the norm in Britain....but they are not in Britain they are in Mexico where the employees make they equivalent of 8 - 10 dollars a day......we sat there day after day watching people slugging down drinks...rarely using the words please or thank you and never tipping the staff. There was a group of us (Scotland, Ireland and Canada)that had a discussion on this topic the last night we were there about the lack of tipping going on, we were all outraged. What is 20 peso's (1.40 CAD) every couple of drinks!!!!!!!! C'mon people.....these servers are working their butts off for you and you can't slip them a buck?.....sorry for the rant but this riles me to no end. 6. Feeding the Coati. STOP IT. READ THE SIGNS POSTED EVERYWHERE AS TO WHY. They are wild animals - use common sense. 7. Room was basic and had all that we needed, shower was really good. Only two towel animals in 7 days :( ....was a bit disappointed. 8. They need umbrellas at the main pool especially at this time of the year when it is soooo hot and humid. All in all it's a very basic lower end resort with great staff. Unfortunately I would not return even though I am a fan of the Riu brand...
Value for money
We spent eleven nights in this lovely hotel. First things first.....hotel spotless, rooms, bar area, restaurants and grounds. The staff are all friendly and hard working, be polite and courteous, and tip them for God’s sake. I saw a lot of people just being downright rude, no please or thank you. Learn basic words in Spanish, it goes a long way! The food was delicious with loads of choice but the Mexican restaurant was our favourite. Didn’t visit the Steakhouse restaurant on the beach but we went through the day a couple of times and it had a very chilled and relaxing atmosphere. Entertainment was a bit hit and miss (like most hotels) and we did struggle to get a table to watch it a few nights. The foam party, once a week, is good fun. We had a day at Xplor. Don’t book it as an excursion. Just get in a taxi and go yourselves, ten minutes down the road. Pay for your ticket when you get there. Go early (we got there at twenty past eight and we were the first on all the zip lines before the coaches turned up). Overall, this hotel is brilliant value for money and we would defo return.
Excellent stay. Gem of a hotel
Great small hotel. Wasn’t too busy. Excellent food and facilities. Private beach with bar and restaurant was great with free bus. Great friendly staff who looked after us. Definitely going back. Loved Mexico !!!
