Great to visit Costa rica but the Hotel was a disapointment.
Just got back from Costa Rica .Hotel Riu Guanacaste. Good Hotel. room was clean apart from the shower/bath mould on the ceiling and around the bath ,extractors did not work so the whole room smelt of damp. After a few days our clothes .shoes and luggage cases were coverd in mold.. The hotel grounds were stunning and the beach was great perfect for a morning walk. The food at the hotel was of a good quality but often cold .Sad to say this hotel was so packed with locals that you have to que for your food by the time you get served and sit down( if you you can find a seat) your food is again cold. Dinning at the hotel was very unpleasant .The only restaurant we enjoyed was at the Asian excellent. Sadly the room cleaning staff at this hotel have a habit of taking items from your room, twice this happen to us .And to other guests who lost $80 .The Tui rep and hotel do not appear to be concerned about the stealing from rooms ,But the worst part was been almost robbed of my camera by two local lads who live near the hotel .This happened just of the beach They ran when we challenged them. If your looking for a relaxing holiday with great service then I suggest you find a better hotel than this one. it is a shame as the hotel could be great .
Ignore the bad reviews
We are currently enjoying the hospitality of the lovely people here in Costa Rica. Was almost put off after reading bad reviews but so glad that we came. This place is wonderful. The staff are lovely & friendly, the accommodation is spotless, the food is plentiful. It's clear that some people just like to moan for the sake of moaning. I have to agree that the queuing for the speciality restaurants needs to be addressed as this is clearly not the best way to do it. We have visited several Riu hotels & have booked for the restaurants at reception in advance. It seems to work a lot better. I'll get back to my G&T now. Cheers.
The hotel looks very impressive upon approach. The first thing you notice are the ginormous orange urns with ginormous bamboo sticks popping out of the top. At night they double up as huge floor lamps. There are some good metal looking sculptures dotted around and the whole place is littered with wet floor notices even though the floor was rarely wet unless it was being cleaned. The service is wonderful as those lovely Tico's can't do enough for you. They are all very polite and happy to help you. Food is OK, nothing special in any of the restaurants but if you want fresh fruit and vegetables there is a never-ending supply. It was very shocking to see the two trays of cooked beans dry and inedible the next morning, laid out beside other breakfast items. The hotel caters for the whole world so you will see everything for breakfast from bread (many different fresh breads), yoghurt and cereal to salad, vegetables, meats, every kind of egg (fried, poached, scrambled or just scrambled whites with spinach, boiled soft or hard) a collection of smoothies, pastries, pancakes and waffles, the list goes on. Water is 100% clean and fresh in this area (Guanacaste) of Costa Rica so don’t worry about the salad and vegetables coming in to contact with contaminated water. However, the rest of the hotel is desperately in need of modernisation and decoration. There are many cracked tiles on the floors which cover the whole place. The corridors are poorly ventilated even though they are open, they overlook the courtyard and there is very little air movement, so a lot of the walls have mould on them. The paintwork is mouldy and flaky in some areas. The rooms. Oh dear! As soon as you open the door you can smell the mould and damp. It could be the aircon which they have blasting out. The bathrooms are in a terrible state as is the private balcony for the room. If you have asthma be sure to take your inhalers as the damp and mouldy conditions will aggravate it. The ice machines in the corridors to the rooms need condemning. I can’t imagine anyone would want to use them as they are rusty and dirty. If you’re going to get a tummy bug I’m sure it will be from one of these. The pool area also looks shabby and at one particular area, behind the pool bar, you can smell sewage. Not good. The small beach area is littered with touts wanting to sell you local crafts and trips etc. so as soon as you step foot on it you are hassled for one thing or another. Definitely won’t be going back
Horrible. Worst Vacation Ever
Guanacaste was like a hotel in Disney World.DO NOT book this hotel if you do not have kids. Actually, DO NOT book this hotel if you do have kids! It was dirty, it smelled, and the food was horrible. My room had ants. The ants were not just on the floor next to the bed, but actually IN my bed. They were found (alive) every night crawling under my pillow and on the bed in general. There was even one night, I was watching a movie on Netflix and an ant crawled across my computer screen. I informed the front desk of this, but they said there was nothing they could do. There were no other rooms available. They said they would send someone to clean the room, but the ants were present mostly at night as opposed to during the day time. I never got in the bed due to the ants and instead slept on top of the blanket from the top of the closet in the room and under a blanket I brought for the plane. The fan switch in my room was also broken, so I was unable to turn the fan off. I could manipulate the actual air conditioner (or the heat) if needed, but of course I got sick by my last day. When I got home, everything had the stench of the resort including my hair, and clothes that I didn't even wear. I would never stay at another RIU resort again.
In general I had a wonderful experience here. I would definitely return, and had a great time. I cannot give them 5 stars because there are a couple issues that would need to be improved, but first of all, the great things: -great customer service -the beach is a real paradise -food is very good -comfortable rooms with great view, I like the fact that they have a small bar besides the minibar, in order to enjoy drinks in your own room. -right across the hotel you can enjoy the Diamante Eco Adventure Park, where I experienced the mile long zip line. A must! -rented wave runners at the beach, very good service, awesome experience, views out of this world. -the night shows were good and fun. -very close to the Liberia Airport, convenient for flights. About 30 minutes. Things that must be improved: -check in was AWFUL. We had to wait in line for about 45 minutes to check in, at the lobby there is no air conditioning so you can imagine how bad it was, noone offered a courtesy drink or anything (other all inclusive hotels do so when they see you waiting more than normal times). Even though I had purchased my stay through the internet, after waiting for so long at a 45 minute line, I had to do another queue for paying, when I told them I had already done so, they said that was just to secure the reservation, but it had to be redone (they were doing this to everyone in line)...this is absurd, have never seen this at any other hotel. And then there was the 3rd queue to get the room keys, this process in total took about 2 hours, this is totally ridiculous! Since I complained, the hotel gave me as a compensation, a massage coupon for 2, which was absolutely great, but I think this has to be fixed! -even though the beach is beautiful, there is no bar, restaurant,or even restrooms at the location, which makes your stay there not that pleasant if you are planning on staying there a long time, it forces you to return to the hotel premises very quickly. -even though they offer a 24 hour food service at the sports bar (that's only in writing), because the first night we missed dinner and when we tried to have some food, the only food available is inside a fridge, and it consists of frozen hamburgers which you have to heat up at a microwave, and nachos with cheese salsa. That's it, doesn't look very nice. Other all inclusive hotels offer better quality food for after hours, maybe basic hamburgers, fries, hot dogs and salads served at a table, but not this. I believed it was totally unacceptable. -the a la carte restaurants have a very ridiculuous policy for reserving a table. Every other all inclusive hotel gives you a chance to make reservations, this hotel forces you to be ready and dressed by 530pm each night (no later) and get in a line to the restaurant you wish to use, and they'll give you a buzzer to let you in whenever they are ready, but they can never assure you how long this will take, it can be from 10 minutes to 1 hour, so it leaves you totally unprepared. We decided to not use it at all. The main restaurant had great food though, but both lunch and dinner times were strictly limited. So when you stay at this hotel, you need to carefully plan out your meal times, or you'll be left behind. There is a restaurant behind the swimming pool which offers basic grill food all through the afternoon, but nothing special. So if you want to eat good quality food, you have limited times to do so. -the discotheque shared by both Riu hotels is a joke, the music is awful, and they have the ridiculous policy of charging you the drinks, so of course very few people use it, the first night we went there thinking we could order drinks and we did not take our wallets with us, so we could not stay, and of course we were not going to go back to our rooms to pick them up. The place was awful, it wasn't worth it either. We tried every single night if things improved, but every single night was empty and music awful, even though the hotel invites you several times to use it, but they are expecting you to pay extra for the drinks, which by the way are very expensive! Doesn't make any sense! -The casino besides the disco, even though also charges for the drinks, is not bad. -The entertainment team of the hotel is not very good, their employees seemed bored and don't look very excited about their jobs. Even though the negative comments seem to outweigh the good ones, it still made for a wonderful stay, I believe the hotel needs to work on improving a few things. I would just suggest anyone planning on going there, to just adjust to a couple things and then just enjoy! I want to thank the hotel management for compensating my comments with a massage for 2, which I thoroughly enjoyed, this makes me want to come back and I can tell they really want to take care of their customers.
