Beautiful resort, But...
I would like to start with the positives. Robinson ( waiter at the dinner buffet) thank you for everything! You made our stay so special. The way you decorated our table every night and always had our iced tea full! He was the best waiter I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! Also, Yahiara ( housekeeper on the 5th floor room 5048) wow wouldn’t even begin to describe how wonderful this woman is! She did bed and towel art for us that was so beautiful and made us feel so special! I posted pictures of what she did with our room below. Yahiara is the best housekeeper I have ever had at any resort. We tipped ( we always do) but I cannot believe what she would do to our room. Our clothes were folded and neatly put away. The room was beautiful for my birthday, wonderful service! We will miss her and Robinson so very much! Thanks to the both of you as this trip would not have been great without them..Now, this resort was sub par to other places we have been and has some big issues that NEED to be addressed. The rooms Really need an upgrade! The beds are old and uncomfortable and hard! The pillows are a joke! I had read reviews about the pillows and thought that it may have been picky people, they were not! They are small and lumpy, and look like an arm rest. We ordered up 3 more and it kind of helped. The buffet was great! The ala carte restaurant’s are just a buffet, maybe a glorified buffet but We didn’t wait in the long line to find out, everyone looked disappointed when walking out! Or mad waiting in line only to be turned away as you can’t make reservations! The pool was beautiful but we spent most our time at the beach! One day they ran out of towels! Two huge bins of dirty towels that did not get washed the whole day, just sat there and the staff just said they were out of them! We did not get a towel that day and seems ridiculous that the hotel wasn’t even full and no towels to use! The service was lazy except for the two I mentioned! This hotel encourages blackout drinking which is fine for a lot of people just not us! The liquor to drink is horrible but great for those who don’t care. The entertainment is great if you are blackout drunk and enjoying anything! Michael Jackson show was cool though! The sports bar food is terrible, unless you are very drunk and just eating whatever is available! It’s heartbreaking that these issues have never been fixed other reviews talk about them.We would come back but only if a remodel happens! Thanks again to Robinson and Yahiara! Owners need to fix this!!! The “fruit basket”the hotel sent for my birthday was also a joke , picture below! Disappointed but love CR!
Lovely hotel, let down by some aspects. FULL DETAILED REVIEW
My stay was first week of November 2019 for two people: HOTEL The hotel itself was really nice. Grand and open with stunning gardens and views all round. A couple of people I met had stayed in other RIU's and said this was very dated in comparison, but i felt it was more authentic. The rooms were spacious and cleaned daily. We stayed on the top floor (5th) at the very end of the hotel (hotel is a U shape and we were right at the tip on the left!) Had a lovely view of the pool, beach and hills so really pleased with that. lower down probably wouldnt get nearly as good a view and the other side would be more hills and fences (there is a sanctuary next door) than anything else. Pool was large and clean, plenty of sunbeds around and the swim up bar was really good. If you're afraid of lizards watch out! They wander around the pool area and sometimes go swimming! The hotel is also right on the beach, if you just walk past the pool area you are there. There are some beach vendors selling trips and knick knacks, but don't bother you once you say no thank you. You can walk along the beach and monkeys / coatis can often be seen in the trees. FOOD The food in this hotel was great. Breakfast was my favourite, there was SO much choice that i'm not sure i even saw everything. Pancakes, waffles, doughnuts, pastries with a variety of sauces. Fresh breads, eggs in many forms, bacon and sausages, beans etc. Cold meats and cheeses, lots of fresh fruit and fresh fruit juices. VERY easy to end up with more than one plate! There are 5 different restaurants in the hotel. Liberia is the main one where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served every day and is open the longest. Lunch is also served at the Ocotal which is beside the pool. Again, lots of choice and genuinely good food which was fresh daily. There are also 4 other restaurants - Furama (Asian) La Toscana (Italian) Tucan (Gourmet, was fancy seafood a la carte and we didnt try this one) and Ocotal (same as where lunch is but in the evenings it's a set menu steak house) This is where it gets complicated - the above 4 restaurants are not open every day (Ocotal only at weekends). They all open at 6 and you have to be there at 6 if you want a table. If you want to eat at 6, that's fine just join the queue and hopefully you'll get to eat straight away. If you're not at the front of the queue, you may be told to come back in half an hour or so (happened to us once) as they only let so many people in at a time. If you don't want to eat until later on, you still have to go there at 6 to book a table for later. You cannot just turn up at 7:30pm as you will be turned away and it might even be closed. I assume this is to ensure they don't have waste food, even though Furama and La Toscana are buffet style. On weekdays we found we had to queue from about 5:30 to eat at 6, as it got quite busy (this being November)! and Friday Sat and Sunday - forget it! got in the queue about 5:20 each day and was already about 30 people long. That said, the food in all 3 of those restaurants was GREAT, so worth the wait in my opinion, just a bit of a nuisance. There are also 24/7 snacks in the Sports bar - ideal if you are leaving / arriving outside restaurant hours or going on an early starting excursion. Mostly it's nachos, sandwiches and microwavable burgers, but early in the morning they stock up on pastries and muffins. EXCURSIONS Not necessarily related to the hotel itself - but we booked one excursion for our week stay. We decided against booking with Tui and opted for one of the beach vendors "Alex on the beach". Tui tell you not to - but if you search them on tripadvisor they have great reviews and we couldn't fault them. Will write a review on their for the trip we did. WEEKENDS!!!!! The weekend is what really let this hotel down in my opinion. I'd heard it was busier at the weekends as it's common for locals to do weekend trips, but it really was ridiculous. Sunday especially from what i heard the hotel is opened up for locals on "day passes" to the hotel facilities and restaurants. I felt as though i was queuing all day. Had to go back to my top floor room to use the toilet because the two on the complex were constantly queued out the door and lunch was a bit of a joke. I can only describe it as similar to shopping on christmas eve! being pushed out of the way, queuing for every individual food station and that was after queuing for half an hour / 45 mins to get in there in the first place. I completely understand that they are a business, and probably make a fair bit of money offering the weekend day passes but I feel as though it spoilt my 4.5* experience totally. i would definitely recommend doing any excursions on the weekends as the hotel will be rammed, and you'll have to eat in the Liberia restaurant those evenings a couple of hours after opening unless you're prepared to queue for an hour for one of the nicer restaurants. ENTERTAINMENT Our jetlag was actually pretty bad and we didn't make it to any of the evening entertainment. They have the standard kids disco first, then a different event every night. From what i can remember, there was a michael jackson night, a Footloose dance night and on Fridays there is a NEON party and the hotel was decorated. There was a face painting station too - but beware this was the night that the hotel tripled in capacity and was very busy! one thing to note is - you don't have to go to the entertainment to hear it. it's extrememely loud. I was on the "left" side of the hotel (as if you were facing from the reception) and this is the same side as the ampitheatre where the stage is. of course we were going to bed earlier than most as we were pretty jetlagged, so i'm not complaining about it being on past 8! I would say most nights it finished around 11, which might be a problem if you're travelling with children or just prefer early nights. we were on the highest floor and one night the room was vibrating with the music being so loud. I'm not sure the other side of the hotel would have been much better, so bear this in mind! Overall i thought the hotel was great, staff were friendly and couldnt do enough for you, and the food was lovely (if you could get into the restaurant!). I'd say that Monday-Thursday this lives up to it's 4.5 star reputation. Fri Sat and Sun massively let it down. I don't mind a queue here or there, i am british after all, but i don't think i should have to queue for toilets in a 4+* hotel and certainly not an hour for dinner. Thanks
Beautiful Resort - Great Value For Money
First of all, don’t let the negative reviews put you off, honestly I don’t know what these people are expecting, I couldn’t fault the hotel! The resort - beautiful grounds, simple layout - you’ll find everything easily, right on the beach, a number of bars and restaurants, and check in was very quick and efficient, I can’t comment on the evening entertainment as I didn’t watch it, but it seemed varied. The rooms - spacious and clean, with comfortable beds - if you’ve read about the pillows, forget it, they’re normal size and we had 5 in our room for 2 people. The bathrooms are also a good size, the bath does seem a little awkward to get in, I’d imagine if you’re less able, but there are handles on the wall to support you - I really wouldn’t worry! The bars - great cocktails, friendly staff and I never had to queue for a drink, even when busier at the weekends, the bar staff are so quick and work super hard to keep everyone happy. Carlos in the Filadelphia bar was fantastic, he taught us some Spainish and had our drinks ready just as we’d finished the current one! The pool bar was another favourite of ours. The restaurants - my favourite was the buffet, so much choice, and the theme for dinner changed each day, I never got bored, and the food was all great quality. We also tried the Seafood, Asian and Italian restaurant, the food was good, but in my opinion not quite as good as the buffet, it was a nice experience and a change from the buffet. The only restaurant I queued for was the Italian, for maybe 15 minutes, the others we just tried our luck with and got a table. The pool - the pool is huge, there were always loungers available, even at the weekends when busier. Drinks service around the pool is regular and quick, service was always with a smile, these people really do work hard to keep the guests happy. There’s the pool bar area and adjoining pool which can be more lively, and the quieter pool which seemed to have more families around. Both pools have the in water loungers which are great when it’s so hot! The beach - beautiful greenery around the beach, you can see the monkeys, and the birds catching the fish. The sand is dark, so it gets hot! We walked to the end, and over the rocks whilst the tide was out and found the secluded beach with white sand, was a couple of hours of adventuring! There are tour operators, locals offering massage, and people selling souvenirs, if you’re not interested you can say no thank you and they’re never pushy. We spoke to Eric and Roberto @GeckoTico and booked our trips with them, Johnny was our guide and he was fantastic, we have reviewed separately, I also had a lovely massage, a family business just a few minutes from the beach, and I did buy a couple of souvenirs too. I always rather my money support the locals than a big corporate company! The service - Every member of staff we encountered made us smile, they all work hard and very long days, they are very attentive, provide great service, and do so in a happy manner. Overall we had a brilliant week, we had lovely weather too, Costa Rica really is a beautiful friendly and clean country, we would love to return and see more, but we also love to see new places! This resort is great value for money, if you’re expecting fine dining and 1-2-1 service spend the money on it, if you’re looking for a great holiday, then book this place! One other thing - the locals, yes it’s busier, no it’s not mayhem, you’ll get a sunbed, you’ll get a table, you’ll get served at the bar, it’s really not a problem as so many people are making out!
Take a minute to read an actual review...
Before you go reading the negative reviews and wonder whether you should book or not, sit back, take a minute to read this in depth and let this help your decision. Firstly the hotel. It did everything my partner and I wanted. The rooms were spacious and easy to get to. The beds were firm and comfortable and there are plenty of pillows. We had an issue with our toilet which was resolved within 10 minutes!! There are a total of 5 restaurants. 1 buffet and 4 restaurants. The buffet changed every evening. With a plethora of varieties of food. You cannot complain that you can’t be catered for. The restaurants require you to book a table, but rather than waiting you are given a device that ‘buzzes’ when your table is ready (any excuse for a pre drink before food) There are 5 bars that open at various times to allow you to get a taste of the different atmospheres the hotel offers. All very well spaced and extremely well staffed. We weren’t waiting more than 2 minutes for a drink at any time! This moves nicely to the staff. The reception staff were intuitive and very helpful. The chefs very kind and accommodating. The bar staff in particular were incredible. Not expecting any tips and we’re gracious when trying to speak the local Spanish language. Equally important is the pool. It was huge. Split into two parts but plentiful in space. Lounges are surrounding and in huge supply so no worries about not getting one in a good spot facing the sun. The activities around the pool were inviting and fun to watch/take part in. The swim up bar was very impressive! A huge space surrounds the pool bar with tables where you can enjoy your drink and also meet lots of other people. My partner and I got talking to so many other people during the week which is only a compliment to the pool and the surrounding area. Lastly. Walk towards the beach in your first two days. Speak to Roberto @geckotico and see what they offer excursion wise. They are kind, genuine and give fantastic service. We did 2 in 1 day, got a massive discount and had Johnny as our guide who was 10/10!!
Nearly Ended Up Deaf! Pardon?
Whilst the Hotel accomodation, food, drinks, pool and beach are pretty decent. The Entertainment (closest description) is absolutely awful! 6-nigths a week dancers perform and mime to records and videos (mainly Wacko Jacko) that are played at exceptionally high volume. Party night is even more deafening, local DJ arrives for 5-hours with Dance Music that is acceptable if you are drunk/on drugs. Unfortunately, the three nightime bars are adjacent to side of the stage so there is no release from suffering the noise. There isnt even a bar in the Reception Area to escape too. As the Hotel is stuck in the middle of nowhere, it is not easy to escape at night (no taxis ranks on complex). Our party of four likes music, we often attend festivals and live music at pubs and bars. But this was such poor quality and so loud we suggest strong consideration is given before booking here. Alternatively wear your ear phones at night! When we mentioned the 'sounds' problem to the Manger, he was well aware of it - but seemed to lack any authority or enthusiasm to control the situation or resolve our complaints.
