    Definitely not a 5 Star

We are here now (Dec 10-17), this is our 4th time in 3 years to the Emerald Bay. With the new addition they have not hired enough staff. They pulled many to man the new extension. Quality of service is now way down from what was. Not one waiter serving around pool all day today. Line up at pool bars, only 2 alacart restaurants left. Now on the plus side, staff working here albeit stretched two ways from Sunday are trying. Shout out to Esau, Victor and Moy at the buffet, excellent servers and very likeable! This place was a 5 star for the first 3 trips but in my opinion has slide to a 4 star.

    Not bad

We visited this resort for my father in law’s 70th birthday. There was 13 of us and we have kids 1.5 and 3. My family paid a little more to get the bigger family suite room in the newer building and I am so grateful that we did because the rooms are so much nicer and bigger, the area is more quiet and there’s no wait for the elevators. We get a view of the beautiful courtyard and also the beach - not as direct beach view as the older building. The older building is just like everyone complained - loud construction noises from morning until dinner and long wait for elevators. We had to access these elevators because the rest of the family was staying in the older building and also we had a stroller and need to use these elevators to go to the lower level to access the restaurants and pools. The rooms at this Riu didn’t have a lot of amenities compared to other Riu hotels. (In the bathrooms). And there was no coffee maker which we were used to from any hotels in the world. Especially with my babies that need warm milk- this was super annoying. The resort does cater to children don’t get me wrong, with the water slides/kids area and kids program and shows but it isn’t too baby friendly in my opinion. When I asked if someone could bring us hot water to the room, they said no and that we had to go to the sports bar. Basically, they don’t have room service, whereas the Riu in Puerto Vallarta does. The food at the Buffet restaurants were good for the first couple days, but after you kind of get sick of it. My kids barely ate on the last few days. Though, we would like to give a shout-out to the 2 waiters that looked after us very well whenever we go to the restaurants - Victor and Orlando! 2 days after our arrival, there were bus loads of locals that arrived and the hotel was a zoo for a few days. Most of them were fine but there were some obnoxious men that were drunk and loud pushing their way into the elevators (while we had kids coming out plus seniors trying to get out) and not to mention at night time yelling in the hallways which echos. Both my kids ended up getting sick while we were on the resort, it seemed like there was a flu bug or a cold going around the resort. Every where I walked, someone was coughing or hacking up something from their throat (I know gross). Last but not the least, on our last night around 6pm, we were getting ready for dinner which was at 7pm. But the fire alarm decided to go off about 5 times - each time was a false alarm. My kids were not liking it at all. Then to make matters worse, our power in our room went out. We called someone to come and an hour later no one showed up. They kept telling us someone was coming. So we had to get ready with our phone and iPad flashlights. My husband tried to expedite it by going to the front desk but they just said someone is coming and smiled. We weren’t impressed to say the least. They eventually fixed it while we were at dinner. I don’t think we will return to this resort in the future. Though it is probably the cheapest compared to the other Riu destinations, but you get what you pay for.

    Love Maztalan area

I did not like there was 2 bands on beach playing every day from around 3pm to 7 30pm, they where not even playing together. Came to relax, could not around pool or from my lovely view of the water. End up spending to much time in our room. Mention to front desk and they said they could not do anything as they have no control over the beach area. I love music but this was too much. Also you should not say you have 3 restaurants when they are all buffet Would not do another Riu, but would go back to that area

    Coming Back!

After leaving the Riu Emerald Bay for one year to go to the Fiesta Americana in Cancun last year, we are going back to our “HOME” at the Riu! The Fiesta was nice but spends, and Cancun is way more commercialized!! Can wait for our return to the Riu. This will be our 5th visit in 6 years, and this year we are bringing a group with us. My wife and I are in our mid 50’s, and we have met soooo many people here in the past, from early 20’s to mid 70’s! We have always had a GREAT experience at the Riu Emerald Bay! The staff is outstanding! Check in and check out is a breeze! The rooms are kept up so well. We are extremely excited to see Rafael and Edwardo, two of the absolute BEST! As for the Dress Code at dinner, whether you are at Buffet or Ala Carte, men, just wear golf shorts, polo shirt and Sandals. There will be NO ISSUE! Final point, TIP THESE PEOPLE! If you want your mini fridge restocked daily, give them a few bucks each day and you will have more than you can handle. Write a note if you want more water daily, and they will do it I am really excited to see the new addition to the property! STOP believing the negative comments, these people will never be happy!

    Amazing Time!!

This is our fifth time (total of 8 weeks) staying at Riu Emerald Bay and we can't wait to go back!! The new addition (hotel block, pools, water slides, theatre, buffet) is amazing! The management, Daniel, Sal and Erika, are second to none. The wait staff, Hesau & Victor, are always eager to greet us with a big smile and share some laughs with us. The bartenders, Eduardo, Armando, Luis, Emmanuel, Roger, Marcos, Pedro and Pancho make our stay complete with their amazing drinks and superb personalities. The food is amazing, the beach is good, the weather fantastic! I can't say enough about this resort hence the reason we keep going back and bringing new friends with us each time. Thank you again Riu Emerald Bay for an amazing two week vacation! <3
