Huge Resort Showing its Age
This resort is huge, with 5 pools, and over 1000 rooms. I had read many reviews prior to travelling, and really wanted to have an open mind regarding the negative reviews. I'm sad to say that I would agree with many of the negative reviews. The elevator issues are HORRENDOUS, with them being slow, and often don't stop on your floor to pick people up. There will be new elevators installed at some point, but the current elevator shafts have to be jack hammered apart. Consequently there is constant dust on every floor, and loud jack-hammering going on during the day. Some of the elevators that are still working have so much condensation in them, that you get dripped on as if its raining. One day, one of the elevators dropped 3 floors, then the doors wouldn't open until they were pried open. The whole elevator issue is very unsettling, and appears unsafe. With all the complaints regarding elevators its sad Riu hasn't fixed the issues yet. On a more positive note, the staff are wonderful, friendly, and try to be as accommodating as possible. Most staff were smiling and always said hello. We've traveled to numerous Riu hotels, and had great experiences, but this Riu hotel is dated, and really showing its age in the rooms, and restaurants. The new expansion is very nice, along with the new buffet restaurant, but unless you book a Superior room you will be in the older section. The Superior rooms don't offer ocean views though. The staff are constantly mopping, so the hotel is generally very clean, but you do need to be aware of slippery floors. The food is mediocre at best, but you can always find something to eat in the vast buffets. The Restaurants are still buffets, but you may be served your main entree. The liquor quality is poor, except in the lobby bar, as they have a little better selection. The bartenders in this bar were very friendly, and offered great service. We couldn't recommend this Riu hotel or Mazatlan based on our experience. There are so many other areas of Mexico that offer better Riu hotels and a more positive experience.
This is a very nice resort. It has 5 pools and several bars. The food is good, there is something for everyone. There are 3 buffets and 2 al a carte restaurants. This a good resort for all ages. There is a kids club and water slides. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Pedro and Orlando were two great servers. There are also several great bartenders. I stayed in the new building and the rooms are beautiful, you don't have perfect ocean view but you can still see the ocean from the balcony. The only complaint that I would have is that it can be loud when there are people in the hallways.
This was our 3rd visit to the Riu Emerald Bay. The addition was newly opened and it is wonderful. Not only more rooms - more pools, bars, restaurants, kid's area and waterslides. There are lot of sun loungers. As usual the food, entertainment and staff are great. We lost an item and the staff found it for us. Thank you so much to our room attendant in #530. Sorry I do not have your name. Noa from Sunwing as so kind and helpful. We really felt that he cared and wanted to assist us. The elevators are still a problem however there is work being done on them.
Good choice in Mazatlan
We just returned from a one week stay with friends. All agreed it was a lovely property - well kept and clean with a massive beach well suited for long walks. Food was very good. There were two main buffet options - we preferred the buffet at the new part of the hotel as it was a modern, newer space that offered a lovely veranda you could dine on outside. Made reservations at one of the restaurants- Bamboo - only to discover it was also a buffet, just an Asian theme. We heard from other guests this was the case in the other restaurants too which was disappointing as ordering off a menu and having table service is usually why you’d want to bother reserving at a restaurant. Also liked the swim up bar at the new area better than the swim up at the old part of the building - just seemed cleaner and better lay out. We would use the chairs on the beach directly in front of this new area as it was well treed and shaded so we hardly noticed there were no umbrellas on the beach. Of note, there is no drink service to your chair at the beach or by the pool - you have to line up at one of the bars for a refill. Our rooms were in the tower and were well appointed. The bed was in the firm side, but comfortable. All rooms in the tower face the ocean. We had a standard room on the 4th floor and had a great view. Our friends paid for an upgrade on a higher floor and felt we had a better view. Their room was exactly the same as ours so not sure that an upgrade is worthwhile. Entertainment was pretty good, especially the beach party and the mariachi night. Will return and recommend.
We travelled to the Rui Emerald Bay to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Our experience there was fantastic. Check in and check out were very efficiently handled. We had a superior room which was a complete oceanview. Fabulous view from our spacious balcony. The room had a very comfortable king size bed, a ceiling fan and an awesome shower. We are not drinkers but required lots of bottled water to stock the mini fridge. Everyday we asked at the front desk to re-stock and it was done immediately. Restaurants were varied and delicious. Our favorite was the buffet downstairs in the main building. There was always something different and often they had some of the same dishes that the alacarte offered. You had to line up at 7 am to book an alacarte daily which we were not interested in. Service was always pleasant. The pools and gardens were exceptionally kept. They also have a waterpark which was very popular. We never had an issue with the elevators but heard other people complain. Entertainment was provided nightly and it was different every night. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly go back!
