Gone down hill big time.
Went to Riu emerald bay about 4 years ago and loved it big time, so much so I convinced my friends for us to go there in vacation. Big mistake, we found out a day before we left that it was under construction and not from the hotel or sunwing. I called sunwing right away and asked for 2 rooms at the other side of the hotel, instead we had a total view of the construction. We were there for 2 weeks on the second week people were saying all the great deals they got because of the construction, we had received nothing so we contacted sunwing, their response is that Riu is saying we weren’t near any construction. Between sunwing and Riu they won’t respond to our emails all we asked for was a credit toward a next vaca. I’m a huge Riu customer but not anymore so disappointed in both companies. These are pictures of no construction
Best Mazatlan Vacation Ever
We travel to Mazatlan once a year, we usually stay at another hotel, but decided to try the Emerald Bay. Beautiful hotel, friendliest staff and the food was spectacular. Our room was gorgeous, and they helped celebrate my 60th birthday with a decorated room, nice surprise
RIU... there is always some Good, Bad and Ugly
Our stay was the week leading up to Easter weekend. Which I will definitely avoid in the future. The Good: All rooms have an ocean view. The beach was clean and had plenty of beach and pool chairs. (Until midweek when the locals arrived for the Easter holiday). The large lobby was bright, clean and inviting. The room was a comfortable size with a king bed, bright white sheets, 3 (?) pillows, (why not 4) and generally clean. Bar fridge with beverages. Large closet area with a safe to store valuables. Bathroom was large and roomy. Numerous large pools to pick from on the property. Best feature was the ocean view balcony (with every room). Food was nothing special but we found it to be fresh and hot food was not cold. Last but not least.... the staff were friendly. The Bad: The bed was firm... but you may prefer that. Like most all-inclusive you get tired of the same food, day after day. The elevators were small and frustratingly slow. Hotel rules ask that people not reserve beach/pool chairs but there were so many chairs with personal items left on them by 7 am that it was a challenge to find chairs (in a sun or shade) around 8:30. Many of those chairs sat empty for hours. Therefore... you are forced to play the same game if you want a specific spot. I would estimate that about 1/3 of the beach front property is fenced off due to construction. The area looks like it includes another pool and a children's poool/play area. Also the construction of a new short tower (guest rooms?). It was a little noisy at times but you can sit on the beach if you find it annoying. (Good thing is the construction has to end at some point). They are not overly generous with the bottled water. Or fridge had one 1.5 litre bottle and two smaller personal bottles. (There is more beer then water) 🙄 They only refill it every second day. Listening to many other travellers complain about the lack of response to their request for more water we walked to a local store and bought 2 extra 1.5 litre bottles in case we needed them. ((Which we did). Day 2, I left a tip in the fridge and they doubled our water supply. I repeated the tip 2 days later... no extra water! Day 6 I gave up... thank heavens we had the water we purchased in the closet. Room water is NOT drinkable. There is a sign on the bathroom wall. So why are they so chintzy?? The ugly... I could see the condition of the box springs... not good. I was afraid to look under the the mattress cover so I didn’t. The tub/shower is hazardous and awkward to get in and out of, even using the handicap bars. My biggest complaint is the black mold! First of all... the shower curtain is washable so why not wash it after each guest? It would certainly help fight the black mold growth. I know the humidity is a huge factor but black mold on the grout and sealant around the tub is treatable. I also refuse to use the glasses that are provided in the room because they are not wrapped and sit upside down on the counters. YUCK!! Will I go back? Overall we enjoyed our stay but we’ll try another resort if we ever return to Mazatlan.
Almost a great trip!
We arrived a week prior to Easter...so Holy Week and very much catered to the locals! This was our second visit! We asked for a higher level room, quieter room... we were given 3rd floor and right above the theatre and beside construction! We requested a higher room, they could only give us the 5th floor but they did accommodate higher also with a bottle of champagne which was nice! Our room was clean, bar fridge was broken and sink plugged up, but you can’t beat ocean front as every room has ocean view which is great! If water needed a refill, we asked and they delivered immediately as well as extra pillows! They are very responsive! Beach is fairly quiet but this week was much busier with locals celebrating! Which brings me to why we probably won’t return ...the Mariachi band was ridiculous! This isn’t the hotel band, it’s a variety of locals that come together and form one maybe 3 bands and play (sometimes at the same time) on the beach for HOURS! One night they played from 3-10pm on the beach then from 10pm-6am behind the hotel! Every day at 3, expect them! The solace of the ocean was ruined for us because of them! So many people were frustrated, including some locals we talked to! A bit of mariachi here and there to experience Mexico music is fine but this was way to much! It didn’t sound like they were playing together as they formed the band on the beach! From the rooms it was as if they were playing right beside you, so no escaping as you can hear them from everywhere! I complained to front desk and they said they have no control as it’s a public beach and she said Mexicans love it! A friend who is a travel agent visited there weeks prior and she said the same thing so it’s not just that we were there at the wrong time! We come for the ocean so this was so disappointing! Last time we visited it wasn’t so so bad but this time it ruined this trip for us! Which is sad because... I love all the chairs available on the beach, I love the cleanliness of the beach, I love the rooms, I love the staff, I love the weather! We would definitely return if changes were made!
It was OK.
The food was good. I had $100 stolen from the hotel room most likely one of the cleaning employees. They tell you when you check in that they are not responsible for stolen/missing items so they must know their employees steal and do nothing about it.
