Riu Cancun Extremely Poor
To start on a positive note the staff were outstanding and that's the only good point. This hotel says 5 star but believe me it struggles to be 3 star, the rooms although very clean they are extremely basic and like the whole of the hotel all seats are covered in plastic. The main décor might be smart trending but just looks tacky and outdated, not what you expect from a 5 star hotel. This hotel is a wild loud party atmosphere which attracts loud party animals, not the place to visit if you want a relaxing holiday. I've been to this hotel before and its now a complete contrast and will never visit this hotel again. The food was well presented with lots of choice but after a while it got very repetitive and as for the specialist restaurants in our opinion the food was very poor, especially the so called rib eye steaks, more fat than meat. The hotel is kept spotlessly clean and so are the outside areas but this again is down to the staff. Rated extremely poor unless you want loud.

Old, worn and Tired.
Be warned, the RIU Cancun is a long way short of 5 stars. At best it's an ugly 3 star. I visited the RIU Cancun for one day, having last visited in 2007. In my memory, the hotel was beautiful and clean, modern and spacious. I was excited to show my partner (who hadn't even met me in 2007) the location of many a legendary holiday memory. Walking in to the lobby, I was immediately underwhelmed and noticed the hotel was now really worn and grimy. We hit the small bar to the back right of the lobby, which was again grimy and old fashioned and I saw wasps and flies in the sugar and fruit. I couldn't quite believe it. The entire hotel now feels like a crappy budget hotel. The restaurants look dingy, some window and door panels were cracked and covered in an awful dark blue film, the pools look tired, and the beach was also looking worn, perhaps damaged by recent hurricanes. Maybe it all felt so ugly because we're staying up the coast at the newly refurbished RIU Caribe which is a little more expensive. But the difference in quality is enormous. Perhaps the rooms are nice? But if the lobby has dirty carpets, broken window panes and generally disheveled, so you want to risk it? My bet is you'll have a better time I'd you book a more modern hotel with less available facilities. Especially as the pool and abr area of the Cancun appeared to be busier than it could capacitate. I'd rate it lower but I didn't actually see the food or rooms.

First class vacation
Returned from a great 2 week vacation last night on the 27th of November. From checkin to checkout everything went great. My wife and I both in our seventies were a bit wary as the hotel is described as party central, there was lots of partying around the swimup bar but nothing outlandish. If you wanted a quieter day there is a small area at the side of the hotel with 2 pools and a small beach. We used both. The staff were great and were always pleasant and Very helpful. The food at the buffet and the international restaurants was good. All in all a great vacation and we are already considering return early next year.
