Beautiful but bugs in the room
El Presidente is a lovely property and the staff is accommodating & gracious. However, our "luxury beach" room had a broken seal in the sliding glass door, which obscured the view. It also had a plague of mosquitoes, which multiplied during our five night stay until we asked management to do something. The room attendant came to fumigate, which was an improvement, but we had received a number of bites prior to that. Since we had stayed here before, we were disappointed that our accommodation was less than five star. The hotel is beautiful and the staff (especially the waiters at the Carbeno restaurant) delightful, but the room had significant problems.
Thank you El Presidente for an excellent stay
My husband and I stayed at El Presidente 7 nights in May 2019. Enjoyed every minute of it! We chose the Reef Room due to extra privacy, uninterrupted views and easy access to the water - definitely upgrade if possible. Our room was clean, modern and spacious with the beautiful patio perfect for watching sunrise/sunset. Housekeeping was prompt and very helpful. In terms of dining options, there are 4 restaurants at the resort: Le Cap, Caribeno, Faro Blanco and Trattoria. We dined at all four of them. Breakfast at Caribeno was good but price of buffet was a little high for the quality of food we got. Le Cap was our favorite spot for casual lunch and dinner. Great selection of Mediterranean food, staff was professional, fun and flexible with customizing meals, very nice ambience by the water. Faro Blanco - amazing fusion kitchen and great wine list! Trattoria - great wine list and Italian classics. All offered amazing service who went an extra mile to accommodate our specific dietary needs. We enjoyed the live music at Le Cap and Caribeno but definitely wish there was more happening at the resort after sunset. The resort spa was great. We enjoyed the couple massage. Having been to several top notch hotel spas, the El Presidente facilities would benefit from renovation though. In terms of activities, we enjoyed snorkeling at multiple resort locations but would definitely recommend renting a boat to venture out to Colombia, El Cielo, Palancar and Paradise Reef to experience more marine life. Try deep sea fishing if you're up to it!
Solitude on the isle of Cozumel
Having spent time studying all the positive reviews about the Presidente before I chose to book, I have to admit, they're all true. While the resort is about a 10-minute taxi ride (about $10 USD) from downtown Cozumel, you're close enough to all the attractions (nightlife, excursions, shopping, dining) yet far enough away to experience tranquility. Perhaps much of it had to do with the time of our visit, or perhaps it's the layout of the property, but it really felt at times like we had the entire resort to ourselves. Because of this, we really didn't feel inclined to venture out to town when it came time to have dinner. Especially given the fact that we didn't need to make a single reservation. We ended up dining at all four of the restaurants on the property and the food was absolutely superb. If you love wine, you'll be pleased to hear that they also have an incredible wine list. While one would think that dining at a resort would be subpar to what you might find on the rest of the island, the Presidente quickly proved that theory wrong. The menu and service is top notch and the prices are comparable to any fine restaurant you'd find in a large metropolitan U.S. city (we're from Chicago). My only issue was that I felt the cost of the breakfast buffet was a wee bit on the pricy side. Other than that, the food was amazing. Our room was minimalistic, up-to-date clean and the bed was very comfortable. The walk-in shower was huge, which made it very easy for a tall person like myself to easily get comfortable. The gym(open 24 hrs) was well-equipped and spa were great as well. The only thing I wished the hotel staff did a better job of was to provide us with a better sense of all the activities the resort has to offer. At times I was left wondering if the bikes that were stationed outside the entrance were free to the guests of the resort or needed to be rented by the hour. I also wasn't too sure about all the snorkeling and scuba activities either and had to do a lot of investigating on my own. Granted we checked in after 5 pm and a lot of the desks were shut down for the day, it would have been nice to have be given a little pamphlet along with the map of the property. Or, while I know a lot of resorts are going green, post the activities via a short video on the hotel TV channel. Would I come back again though? Most definitely! Four days wasn't enough. We're already planning our next trip, this time with the rest of the family.
This was our fourth visit both pre and post Wilma and two renovations. The new decor is more modern and not as charming. The beds and bedding were very comfy and we opted for a beach front room with a wonderful view and just steps to the quiet beach. We loved the outdoor garden shower and paid a premium on this visit (worth it for us). The bathroom was large and lovely. The outdoor patios now have a comfy lounge for watching the boats on the water, although it did catch the sun in the afternoons. The staff we encountered were all very pleasant and warm including front desk, evening bellmen, housekeeping, beach staff and grounds keepers. Would highly recommend a trip with Scuba Du on site for diving or snorkeling boat. We spent most of our time on the south beach, there is also one on the north end and one in the middle suitable for wading in. Most of the families trend to the pool and middle beach. We were surprised to walk by the lovely infinity pool during the day and hear loud music on a sound system. There is an adult pool toward the back of the property also but doesn't have the ocean view. The north and south beaches were quite peaceful. There is a well equipped gym and a nice spa. We dined mostly in town although did enjoy lunch on the beach several times with a decent menu. Sleeping was very quiet, we never heard neighbors during the evening or night. The a/c was much quieter than most. We snorkeled in front of the resort every day. Some of the coral is slowly growing back from the hurricane years ago, but we saw a nice variety of fish, some the same, some different each day. We felt completely relaxed after a week here, away from the stress and worries of the world.
Excellence not quite -- more attention to details
Check in was good, bell hops were on point. Restaurant was not so good for breakfast (hot items were cold and overly pricey for what it was, think NYC Intercontinental pricing but in Mexico.) Issues that I am taking off two stars for -- main room door frame had big gaps in it so noise carrier and you could see through the jambs. Hermit crab crawled under the door and into the room (also a pretty big gap), large dead cockroach in the hall leading up to the room for a few days took away from the ambiance a bit. No bugs in the room just the hermit crab... Also for the price a hot breakfast for be included -- sorry but $60 US of breakfast for a buffet is more upscale NYC price and would have expected excellence versus below mediocrity. The other concerns regarding etiquette of guests with kids is concerning. Trying another outfit on our next trip for R&R in a few months.
