    In serious need of a renovation!!

    We booked seven nights at this resort, but could only stay one night and then paid for an upgrade to The Grand Reserve. This resort is in serious need of a renovation. The rooms are old, decor is dated, closet doors don't close, furniture shows wear, showers leak...I could go on..wear & tear is evident. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained, but this resort is not what it appears to be on paper. Not a 4-star property for sure. We were very disappointed and probably won't go back to any Melia property at the Dominican Republic.

    Lack of communication

    Back in March, we originally booked our trip to stay at the Paradisus Punta Cana from 8/8-8/11. Then we received an email on 7/29 stating that the Royal Service room we had booked had been closed effective 7/1 due to construction at a neighboring resort, but that we were being 'upgraded' to the Palma Real -- there were no details in the email regarding our confirmation number, transportation arrangements or reasons as to why we only received the email a week prior to our trip, thereby preventing us from having any choice in the matter in regards to staying at the Palma Real. We frantically began reaching out to all of the hotel contacts we had acquired, to ensure our booking was correct (as this information was not updated on our Melia rewards account), and had to update the Otium transportation company as well. Once this was done, we then arrived in Punta Cana on 8/8/19. We were quickly led out to a van by the Otium rep and were left there for 30+ minutes without any word of what we were waiting on or for how long. Thankfully the other couple in the car spoke fluent Spanish and were able to question the driver, as they had been told that they were waiting on US to arrive and they had been waiting an additional 30+ minutes before we got in the van. With the waiting without explanation and cleanliness of the van, highly recommend reserving private transportation with another company. We arrived at the hotel at the main lobby, and had to then turn over our passports in order to confirm that we were Royal Service guests (even though the hotel had our arrival information). It was a nice gesture by the hotel to upgrade us to an ocean front room, as we were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. We had arrived early, so we were able to put our bags in the office and go enjoy the resort until our room was ready. The room was nice enough, although with the bathroom, there was little to no privacy -- the door for the toilet was clear and did not close off the room, and open area/ shutters leading into the bedroom area meant you could not take care of certain business in complete privacy. There was also an issue with the air conditioner leaking, so the floor was constantly wet. The issue with the communication definitely showed when it came to food. We were automatically booked at the Palazzo for the first night, but we asked our butler if we could change as we would like to have sushi (we did not mark Italian on our pre-arrival preference sheet). He was able to make the change to Bana, then dinner on the beach the next night and then the last night at Rare. We were also informed that we only had access to 3 restaurants as several of them were closed due to renovations/ relocation -- none of this information was made known to us on the website or at check-in. The grounds of the hotel were OK, the pool area was good. For Royal Service, the area is supposed to be adults only, however there were kids in and out, with no workers policing the area. We were also not informed by the hotel regarding meal times (breakfast only until 11:30, lunch only from 12:30-4:00, dinner begins at 630pm and an extremely limited room service menu), so needless to say we missed lunch the first day and breakfast on the 2nd day. When we went out that night, it turned out that BANA was only hibachi (no sushi) so we didn't end up eating. We went to Brisas for a drink and were shocked to see people eating sushi and a sushi chef. When we asked our butler about it the next day, he advised that he was told they were closed. For dinner on our second night, we arrived at the beach to find that there were 2 weddings set-up and no special beach dinner. We overheard another couple saying it had been cancelled. We texted our butler to see if there was a way to get into another restaurant. We went to RARE and the couple in front of us were explaining the situation to the hostess in Spanish the exact same situation we were in -- the difference was that she gave them a table and blankly stared at me when I explained the same situation in English, and then refused to seat us. This was the first vacation where on more than one occasion, we felt ignored or treated lesser than because we spoke English. Our butler was able to get us a table at Palazzo for the Italian food -- which was fine, but not a restaurant we had planned on visiting. On the last night, we did the Circle presentation and received a voucher for Palazzo -- which was an interesting experience, but I would not recommend paying $80 a person for the tasting menu. For the main buffet, there was an OK selection, but it was the same each day. For the buffet at Palazzo, I would not recommend, as they leave the food in an open air area, and we watched black birds peck at the food with the waiters shooing them away (and leaving the food behind) – the main buffet is indoors and sealed off, so highly recommend for hygiene. The Palma Real was not our original choice, and I am not sure of the experience we would have had, had we gone to the Paradisus Punta Cana as we originally planned. The food situation was extremely disappointing and frustrating, especially considering we were only there for 3 nights and did not get to eat at any of the restaurants or types of cuisines that we wanted to. In regards to the royal service, I would also not recommend paying extra for this. The main buffet was better than Palazzo, the pool area was small and kids were able to enter/ exit without issue, and we only communicated with our butler via Whatsapp to assist with correct dinner issues (we did not need anything else). We would have greatly appreciated saving $100+ a day by not booking with the Royal Service add-on. For the beach, chairs were still first come/ first serve, no one brings you drinks or snacks on the beach or at the pool, so I failed to see the value for the additional fee. For the staff, aside from the hostesses at the restaurants and waiters at the main breakfast buffet, everyone was extremely friendly and personable. Our butler Armando Minier was extremely friendly and was very quick to resolve the issue with getting us a reservation after the beach dinner was cancelled – as he was unaware that it had been cancelled. In regards to night time activity, it would also have been great if there was a schedule posted so we would know what our options were.

    Paradisus Palma Real Royal Service

    We loved Paradisus Palma Real. It’s a true upscale resort. The food and service were amazing. Our butler, Juan Suarez took great care of us. He was pleasant, attentive and professional. He made all the restaurant reservations for us. The palazzo service and food were amazing. We also recommend the hibachi restaurant. The drinks were as desired. We would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a luxurious vacation. Just be aware of the “Circle”, they tell you that you will only spend 45 mins on a presentation and it really lasts 2-3 hours. If they approach you run. Beside that everything else is good at the other. Emely and Daniel

    Pleasant stay.

    Very good. Our butler Armando was very helpful. Highly recommended. Luis from Palazzos restaurant was very nice and attentive. The employees at this hotel were pleasant and helpful. The food on the other hand needs more flavor. The buffet has a variety but tasted ok. The room and facilities are well-maintained.

    My boy Edison Aleautana was the best bartender in the entire resort no lie. Better have his job next year or I’ll flip the fudge out!!! No cap!!! He never forgot an order and always had a smile on his face
