Good and Bad
The positives: Excellent location, convenient to beach, bars and restaurants, etc. Friendly, helpful staff. Clean. Good fast Internet (but paid for as part of the justification for the US$23 per day facility fee scam more of which later). The negatives: Very noisy. Woken several times every night by heavy trucks reversing directly below our window, traffic noises, sirens, etc. Internal noise was also a problem, with very poor sound proofing. Noise from nearby rooms was quite disturbing, especially the sound of toilets flushing throughout the night. Whilst overall the room housekeeping was very good there were some niggles, particularly the inconsistent timing of the room cleaning, which varied from early morning to late afternoon and everything in between. This made it impossible to plan our day because we never knew when we could have undisturbed use of our room. There were also odd days when supplies were not replenished. When we arrived there was no kettle in the room. When we complained we were provided with a disgusting dirty looking plastic specimen that should have been scrapped about 30 years ago. We ended up buying a kettle at US$23. Also the coffee maker stank and I couldn’t get it to work. Be aware that the hotel has no in-house dining facilities, no bar, no proper lounge and no room service. There is a branch of the Hawaiian Aroma Caffe on the lobby floor which serves coffees, breakfasts, light meals etc. It also serves bar drinks. However, the coffee shop closes early so there is no food or beverage facility in the hotel in the evening. Tiny bathroom with an even tinier shower, with a shower door that bangs against the vanity slab if you open the door more than about 40 degrees. Finally, the dreaded facility fee which goes by the euphemistic name “Ohana Waikiki Connection”. For some weird reason the hotel process an authorisation against your credit card on a daily basis but only posts an actual debit for the total amount when you check out. Because the actual debit is not matched to the daily authorisations they stay on your credit card account until they eventually expire in a months time, but as long as the pending transactions exist they reduce your available spend. In my case it was a currency card and the impact is that I can’t finalise my currency exposure for a month. As commented by other reviewers the hotel is old and a bit tired. In summary, whilst the Ohana has some good points we would be motivated to try elsewhere on our next visit
Yes, it's old. But so what. It's perfectly situated to beach, International Marketplace, ABC stores (what isn't LOL) and the staff were friendly and kind. Pool is pretty and not busy. Elevators slow but they are updating. Late check out. Pool and beach towels provided. Bathroom tiny but updated counter and sink and potty. Wifi was fast. A/C noisy but a guy fixed it in about 30 seconds. A good time was had by all!!!
A great place rest between excursions
My husband friends and I stayed at the Ohana East. Not fancy, it is a reasonably priced great hotel. Near the beach transportation, restaurants, and shops The staff is efficient and friendly. Configuration of the bathroom was the only problem.
Oahu Resident, stayed in town for an event
My family and I stayed 4 days here, in a spacious 1-bdrm Suite. Although we live only 20 minutes from Waikiki, we needed to stay in town for an event, as my wife was participating in The Kamehameha Day Parade as a Pa'u Unit Horseback Rider. The unit we had was perfect; spacious and accommodating. From the start, the Bellman was helpful and took good care of us and our baggage. At check-in, Jessie went above and beyond...she was amazing! Every staff member at the Front Desk greeting us with a warm smile! Throughout our stay, the Housekeeping Staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful as well! Everyone was great! These folks pride themselves in customer service, and it shows. And at check-out, the operator was helpful to get us situated and the Bellman that assisted us went above and beyond as well! Overall, an amazing experience!
In the heart of Waikiki
We stayed here for 2 nights at the start and end of our 2 week vacation in Hawaii, to allow us to recover and prepare for our ~15 hour flights. It is about 30 mins by taxi/Uber/shuttle from the airport. It is in an excellent location if you want to be right in Waikiki - only about 5 minutes walk to the beach. Lots of eateries nearby including some delicious, very cheap (cash only) udon. Parking is 35USD per day (unless included in room fee, which thankfully ours was). The carpark height is also very low 6ft2! We had some AMAZING staff - namely Angie. She worked so hard to sort out a challenging room situation (overbooked and our booked room was unavailable). She found us a great alternative. Such a sweetheart and a lovely friendly face when you are weary from travel. Maile was also great!!! The on site cafe (at the lobby level) does delicious acai bowls (with peanut butter) The rooms are a bit dated and the economy room is quite tiny, but if you are only in the hotel to sleep then this really isn't a big deal - the rooms are quiet and the beds are comfortable enough. In future, we will probably avoid Waikiki as it just isn't our scene, but this hotel was pretty good value.
