The STAFF!!!!! Gets 5 Stars!!
We visited OBS for my Uncles 50th Birthday. We were a group of 20 of us all ages from 20 to 85 years young. My wife and I travel every 6 months to the Caribbean, Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc. We have stayed at Breathless (X-Hale), Sanctuary Cap Cana, Iberostar Grand Bavaro, Royal Service at Paradisus all in DR just to keep it relevant. OBS is not those, they try their best to sell as it is if you book as we did the Luna de Miel suite w/ Privilege. What OBS is, is an economic kid friendly resort with an amazing staff, decent food and great entertainment. I’ll break down each individual section below. Valet/ Bellhop Service – these guys make you feel safe and happy the second they open the transport door. “Welcome home”, smiles and excitement. Check In – We booked the Luna de Miel suite which included the Privilege services. So we had a quick private check in where they gave us the layout of the resort, introduced us to our Butler and broke down the Privilege services and inclusions. Cold towel with eucalyptus, and a drink offering, while they went through the orientation. Privilege – Well this is where they really could improve in some areas. With Privilege you are supposed to get 24 hour room service, first there are no Room Service Menus or Even restaurant menus in the rooms. Second, they never answered the phone after midnight in the first 3 days that were their after that we just ate at the sports bar for our late night meals, it would have been the same menu anyways. The good part of Privilege is the option to make reservations, the top shelf liquor, and the Butler service. Butler Service – Our assigned butler was ok. What I will say is that the staff very much works as a team where our assigned Butler lacked in service. Wellington and Jhoan really made up for it. These two guys were amazing. From transport service to needs to just great to have a conversation with and quick to respond to our needs. Restaurants – The food quality is hit or miss at OBS compared to any other resort I have visited whether in DR or anywhere else. A lot of the reviews say the food is the best ever, I must say they may not have been to many places, or just ate at the buffet. The buffet: If you only eat here you will really enjoy the food, large variety of food, a pasta station, and a grill station. Amazing Staff there as well, Alcedes and Eddy, really do a great job. One thing to say is the buffet building is hot temperature wise. The steakhouse: Really small thin steaks hard to make it medium like the wife likes it. They tend to over cook the steaks I always order rare and get medium my wife ordered medium and got well done. The staff there is amazing. The Mexican Restaurant: We had the 50th birthday here, the staff was amazing the infused tequilas were so good. The food portions were small the servers went and got seconds and 3 for people in our group. The Enchiladas were good as was the fajitas. The French restaurant: This is where we had the lobster dinner that’s included with Privilege, we also purchased a Tomahawk Steak (not worth it at all). The couple that was with us, ordered from the menu they were not happy. The Japanese Restaurant: This place is the best restaurant in the resort. Wellington was our Chef he did an amazing job and was hilarious. Miguel and my main man Fernando were great, funny and didn’t miss a beat with the service. We had our drinks always topped off. Mikes Coffee: Simply just go its amazing!! The Bars – This is for the wife and I was the most important areas, lol. The Lobby bar: we mostly sat in the lounge chair or a high top table, Miguelina took great care of us. She was always on top of things. Even when it was 10 or more of us. She always has a smile on her face. Marino the bartender either in the lobby or the Piano Bar, is great, good service, he has the cold beer hiding in the Piano Bar go for it!! The Swim up bar and pool bar. What can I say these guys are only one or 2 maybe 3 sometimes and they take good care of everyone. Rooms and the resort – were moved rooms the second day there we were in building 10 in the 2 story Luna de miel suite. This puts you right in front of the pool bar and its loud in the room even people talking sound like they are on your balcony. There is no sound proofing in any of the rooms. The Moved us to a different Luna de miel suite this one was quieter and the fan actually worked in this one. Both rooms are pretty run down. The resort really needs renovation. What I paid for the Suite with flight and transfer service (we didn’t book through there website), I could have stayed at Sanctuary or the Grand and had amazing suites. If I were to return I would just do privilege junior suite and leave it alone. The higher end suites are not worth it they are run down. The mini fridge rarely got restocked and they wont bring you additional beer, only 4 per day. Also make sure to drink them cause they wont give you 4 per day if you have 2 they only add 2. They will charge you to bring you more beer $16 dollars to be exact. Every other resort I’ve been too anywhere in the Caribbean will stock your minibar as you want it all beer and water is what I normally as for and fill the fridge up this resort won’t do that. Walk yourself to the bar or to the privilege lounge to get a few beers. So if you happen to want a beer say while you shower and get ready for dinner make sure you brought beer back with you, or didn’t drink the 4 cans you had. If not your paying $16 for 4 more. Did I mention that’s if they actually restock the fridge. Spa– This is one thing that I miss from the other resorts I’ve stayed at. The Spa here is nice its good to get a massage. The other resorts previously mentioned all have huge spas with hydrotherapy course or water rituals, where those who book say the Privilege equivalent of that resort get complete and free access to those type of extras. Entertainment and Night Life – The star of OBS, great shows, great entertainment staff if you want to have fun just follow the entertainment staff. Cherry (Manuela), Maracha (Marisol), Pokeman, Chocolate!!! All great fun and caring people. We miss them and if we went back its because of the staff and this group right here. Overall, I’d give our stay an B+, overcoming some of the cosmetic looks of the room and hotel and the not so good bed, was easy. The staff, the ambiance was what made this place a fun. The resort policies over canned beer, the lack of 24 hour room service even though we paid to have that privilege, the rare refill of the mini fridge, we would most likely consider some where else for our vacation. Considering the price we paid for the Suite. If we decide to comeback we would just do a privilege junior suite and that’s only if the family decides that’s the next meeting point. I’m trying to convince them other wise
The hotel is very good! The room and the food are very good! The beach party is the really nice! The activities all day long are really nice! The animation team is excellent and the beach is very beautiful! Don’t forget the staff who do a wonderful job and a special thanks to pokemon! I recommend this hotel for family!
Long Weekend Getaway
This was our second visit to the resort. Our first visit was back in August of 2018. Our second visit was from November 6-12, 2019. On this trip we decided to pay the extra and do the Privilege Package. By doing this we had a butler Jhoan. Although he had a few days off during our stay he still kept in touch with us via Whats App... With the Privilege you are able to make dinner reservations which makes things easier. Otherwise you are given a beeper and have to wait. The Italian Restaurant was our FAVORITE! We ended up eating there twice. Elvin and Rafhi were absolutely WONDERFUL!!!! They worked at the Italian and at lunch at Villa Marina. They were both so attentive. Melfi was the bartender at the beach- our glasses were never empty. He took amazing care of us!! We liked going this time of year as it was not as crowded as it was in the summer. There were not a lot of kids. If you want to get involved you can - the entertainment crew is amazing!! They had a FOAM Party on Saturday and it was a lot of fun!!! The music at the Main Lobby every night was excellent. Sunday was "Love Night" and they had 3 men who could sing Opera and a violinist who were SPECTACULAR!!! Cons - they have lost a lot of their beach. You couldn't sit near the water - it was a steep drop off to the beach. Not sure how they plan to fix the beach but I am not so sure there will be a beach in a few short years. All in all we were very happy and would go back again!!! 3rd Time is a Charm!!!
