We just came back from an outstanding time at this property. We were in the Royal level and would recommend it highly. The service was outstanding and the food was very good overall. Disappointed with the on-site Mexican restaurant and the seafood restaurant. Great value. We loved Occidental Cozumel so much that we plan to return in a few months for our next vacation. Caution: Do not use the Pro Dive Service located on the property, poor poor poor. Use an outside service like Scuba Life or others. Pro-Dive cancellation policies are too strict and prohibitive.
Extremely clean. Relaxing, lots of vegetation and you felt you were not in a chain hotel. Food was average. If you go hungry, that is your fault. Could use more deck chairs. I would go back again without hesitation. Felt safe. Staff was very good. Walls of the units very thin, can hear what is going on outside. Even though there are no elevators, being on the top floor I preferred, no one on top of you.
Pros and Cons
This review can be taken with a grain of salt; I am not a frequent Cozumel visitor so I have no baseline outside of the other all inclusive hotels I've visited in Cancun. I was most surprised by the lack of free wifi at the all inclusive price. It is a great location with a very nice beach set up. The staff was welcoming and friendly, probably the best aspect of the hotel. We were a bit disappointed in the overall facilities as there was no outdoor hot tub (indoor and you had to schedule a time to visit it) and our mini fridge was broken the duration of our stay and never addressed. I've stayed at a nicer 3 star hotel in Cancun for less money. Overall the negatives were small and we still had a good time.
Middle of the road trip
Overall a good experience for our first trip to Cozumel. Positives: Nice beach compared to others we had seen on the island Activity staff around the beach and pool during the day were great. They were always looking to get people involved and offered many different options (water sports/towel art/ bartending classes). Jesus did a great job of keeping the kids on the resort busy with activities also. Rooms were adequate for the price. Nothing special but our room was always cleaned and restocked when we returned each evening. Staff - The majority of the staff were very friendly and always greeted you with a hello. There were a few that were lacking those skills but most of them went out of their way to make you happy. Close to downtown. Usually we do not venture too far off the resort we stay in but we did this trip and were not disappointed. Plenty of shops/bars and places to eat downtown and just a short taxi trip to get there. Negatives: Check in process - Took about an hour to get us checked in as it seemed like everyone got there at the same time. Wouldn't be much of an issue if the lobby had some room to sit and wait but you really do just stand in a line.... Food - It was rough. Breakfast buffet was good but the same each morning. For lunch you had 1 option with wait times to get seated. Same food everyday and it was burgers/hot dogs/pizza type food. Dinner is what really got me. We ate at the buffet on night #1 as we were told we could only eat a la cart 2 nights while we were there. Pasta was bland but ok and what they called pork chops seemed like the left over ham from breakfast. We decided to eat off property for the next 2 nights (Alberto's and the No Name Bar were both excellent). Both a la cart places were ok but nothing special. WiFi - Paid for wifi during our stay so we could check in back home with the kids and keep up with business activity if needed. Service was unreliable and you can only register 2 devices per day. Just a heads up to anyone who still likes to stay connected when travelling. Overall we had a great time as we usually just enjoy our time at the pool/beach everyday and we met some great people that were also staying at the resort. We'll definitely visit Cozumel again but not sure if we would choose to stay in this location again.
We stayed five nights at Occidental on Coz and had a great time. The resort cleanliness was nearly perfection and every staff member was extremely friendly. We were attending a wedding onsite and it appears the planners did a very nice job with the wedding party. Food was OK/good but I realize its difficult to cook for the masses. Our wedding reception dinner was outstanding however. The grounds were manicured and clean. Pools were nice but crowded. The beach was comfortable but crowded as well. Easy check in and out. We had an issue with our toilet and phone but once reported, they were fixed immediately. I highly recommend! Hope to be back! One note...take water shoes if you plan on wading into the ocean. There is lots of coral and sea shell debris in the surf. All in all a great trip.
