Fantastic Summer Holiday
Just wanted to say to the staff and people of Cuba that we as a family had a fantastic time in your country. It met all of our expectations, and exceeded them as well. The hotel was lovely with a brilliant sea view room that was so close to the beach. The food was tasty and had a wide range of choices. We spent most of our days at the beach and in the sea. I had a perfect morning ritual of getting up early, 7am, and going for an early morning swim. A perfect start to the day. The staff at the hotel were lovely and very friendly and a credit to themselves as they all worked so hard. We did venture out on several occasions. I would recommend the walk to the top of the hill where you get an aerial view of the hotel. We also went into Havana which was one of the highlights of the holiday and has to be experienced in person. Another highlight was in the evening soaking up the atmosphere in the bars of the hotel whilst listening to Cuban music and drinking Cuba libras. My favourite was the grasshopper. A special mention also to the bar staff who were brilliant and so friendly. Our stay at Memories gave us a flavour of Cuba that we definitely want to experience again. I would recommend travellers staying at the hotel to take their own insulated travel cups. This helps keep your drinks cool, but more importantly helps the environment by reducing the plastic cups. Thank you Memories for a fantastic holiday. We loved our Cuban experience, which we intend to repeat.
Liked this hotel and I would definitely return. It seems like all of the hotels and restaurants the food can be very hit and miss. We did suffer a couple upset stomachs. Nothing too worrying though. The food variety depends on what they have on the day. Entertainment was good and you could join in or avoid it if you wanted. We particularly liked the Italian restaurant and went 3 times. The food varied each time from excellent to barely ok. We didn't really like the others very much and the chairs in the gourmet one are so uncomfortable. Drinks can vary in strength depending on who pours them. We loved the wildlife in the area. Frogs, lizards, crabs and there is a coral reef where you can see some cool fish. There are cats that cone to the restaurant for food and dogs on the beach. They all seemed friendly. I wish the hotel would look after these animals more, especially the dogs. A Canadian lady rescued 2 dogs while we were there. They both needed medication. I was so greatful for that. They do regular hikes up the smallish mountain behind the hotel if you fancy it. This hotel is mostly on it's own, there isn't much near it, no others to visit. There is one restaurant outside which is seafood but I didn't visit but was told it was good. We did pay for the diamond club but we are not sure we'd do it again. The drink choices were better. The place on the beach was ok but I'm not convinced about the rest of it to be honest. Overall, a lovely hotel with nice staff.
In between mountains and the ocean
Gave this 5 stars not because its a 5-star hotel, but because it was a wonderful experience and its well worth the price. I've been to half the Caribbean islands and this was my second time in Cuba, first in Jibacoa. The mountains right behind the hotel are wonderful, and so is the ocean (great for snorkeling). The hotel is situated between ocean and beautiful, lush mountains. The food was good; I'm vegetarian and always had enough to eat. Bring water shoes. Hotel provides snorkel gear. Great activities on hotel. I met lots of repeat customers. There's a cute puppy at the end of the beach that has mange (which is curable in dogs and is non-contagious to humans). If you're going here, please being mange shampoo for the dog and give it to the Sunwing lady (you'll have your orientation with her). We spoke to her about this and she'll use the shampoo to wash the dog. You can get it from any pet store or vet for like $10 CDN. Thanks for your help. The only improvement I'd make: there should be no smoking at the outside of the lobby at the front, and where the sunwing sign is is. There are 'no smoking' signs up inside the lobby and central area, however there are 2 smoking areas that's under the same general roof as the lobby and central area, so the smoke travels to the non-smoking areas - even faster in the heat. With alcohol, people tend to chain smoke. Smokers should have a nice designated area that is outside of that entire area to smoke.
Just returned from 7 nights at Memories Jibacoa. Beautiful older resort. Beach is absolutely beautiful. Excellent walk in snorkeling. Staff here are amazing! Our new friend Yendri, with the entertainment staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and included. Also a wealth of information about things to see and do in the area. Oralis, in the beach bar, is a rock star! Makes the best drinks ever, and her personality and showmanship are the best! Lionel took us out snorkling and made us all feel at ease. Us girls ditched pretty quick, but he and the guys went out to the beautiful coral reef which was awesome! Also a shout out to the morning front bar gal, (her name escapes me, blond ponytail) always pleasant and happy to accommodate our wishes.
