It was "OK", but not a 4 star

Perhaps I had quite high expectations of the hotel based upon the photos on the web site, but I was able to see how misleading this could be when I witnessed how they were captured. And its worth bearing in mind that most people post pictures on Trip Advisor when they see something nice, so this gave me quite an obscured view of what to expect. I am aware that many people return many times to this resort, but many of these are Canadians, for whom this is their version of our costa del sol. Firstly the good bits - Being adult only it is much quieter than many of the hotels we have visited before. The staff (in the main) work very hard, and are very hospitable (if you tip well) - one particular staff member who absolutely deserved every tip, was Demi, always smiling and a very nice lady. There is no pressure to join in with the resort entertainment, and also no constant reminders about the Spa - in fact we were given just one spa leaflet in 2 weeks, with no pressure to book, this is how it should be at a hotel. The same applies to resort photos - the first hotel we have visited where we have not been constantly pressurised into sitting for a photo shoot. Everything is very close to your room, as the resort is quite small. The reef is easily accessible and provides good opportunities for snorkelling. Being in a very rural part of Cuba, half way between Havana and Matanzas, there is plenty of wildlife to be found. There is a fabulous entertainments team who work incredibly hard, Yanni and Viktor are the ones who stood out for me. The grounds staff also work very hard, and the gardens are lovely. The beach is cleaned daily - something you can appreciate if you walk to the right along to the Cuban holiday resort and camping resort beaches which are grim to say the least, and a real health hazard with broken bottles and discarded bits of beach furniture at the shoreline. The pool is also very clean and I witnessed it being treated daily. Now the not so good - THE ROOMS are very dated. We shared our poolside room with LOTS of tiny ants, and the bath had a large split in the bottom, so was unusable as a bath and leaked water onto the floor when you showered. Staying with the room, the maid service was quite poor - in 2 weeks we had our pillowcases changed just once and the sheets not at all, despite leaving the card on our beds for a linen change. We noticed on the days when we did not leave the maid a tip that she left us less water, less towels, no toilet rolls and no toiletries (in fact the toiletries were only given twice in a fortnight, and we tipped her almost every day). TIPPING - is expected everywhere, and if you don't you will find you are ignored at the bars and in the beachside restaurant, and treated disdainfully when you do get served. One of our party shook hands with one of the costumed performers outside the sections restaurant and had the tip basket thrust at him for the pleasure. One very smiley lady at the beachside restaurant was extremely accommodating on a day when we visited straight from the beach so had no money on us - for the rest of the holiday she was not very accommodating at all. The staff need to be made aware that tipping is for "good" service, not just service. DOGS - are a real problem at this hotel, so if you don't like dogs don't go. They are allowed to roam into the beachside restaurant where they sit at your table waiting for you to feed them. The also roam into the lower lobby of the main building, and onto your balconies. I was reluctant to visit the beach on many occasions due to the aggressive nature of some of them, including one which tried to hump my leg, and one pair were stuck together in the lower lobby after they were mating there. The cats (there are a few) are less troublesome. There are nightly shows, but being outside you WILL get bitten by insects while you watch them, so take a good insect repellent and lots of antiseptic cream. CURRENCY EXCHANGE - make sure you get a receipt for your currency. We didn't and after checking what we had been given in line with the hotel exchange rate we realised we had been short changed twice by about £10 each time. The same lady charged my husband double the cost for a wifi card, which he would have complained about at the time but just couldn't be bothered with an argument on holiday - we don't go away to argue with the staff. THE ENTERTAINMENT - was quite "samey" every evening and it was a race to leave at them end before any of the performers approached you with a CD or DVD of their work for a hefty fee. THE DISCO - we were looking forward to this, but sadly, in two weeks at the resort, it was only open twice. RESTAURANTS - this is the part which saddened me greatly. Despite having insect nets over all the windows (which were mostly ripped) the restaurant doors are left open and the food is home to many flies, which you have to frequently swat away while you eat. We also found 2 cockroaches crawling on the serving stations, and birds fly in and out while you eat. The buffet restaurant is not air conditioned so you will sit and sweat while you eat, although I understand that air conditioning is currently in the process of being installed. After 10 days of repetitive buffet offerings we walked into the restaurant to find that it did, for once, look like it does in the marketing material - lots of decorative food carvings, clean and with lots more choice which was well presented. I naively assumed that there had been food shortages, or that the restaurant manager was off up until that point, but the display was put on solely for a marketing photo shoot that evening, and we did not get the same selection, service, of display after that one night. The same can be said of Cuba Day at the beach which happens every week. The day which I attended I filmed a chef taking dead lobsters into the sea and placing them carefully in the water. After that he re-entered the water while being filmed by the marketing crew, searched for the lobsters and brought them out, shaking one gently as if it were alive. To be fair this did make me smirk a bit, but after the third take I started to wonder how long the lobsters had been dangled about in the heat and whether they would now become inedible. Needless to say, we did all have poorly tummies throughout our holiday, my husband is still suffering with his. We have travelled extensively throughout the world, and even by a poor countries standard (such as Vietnam) the food at Memories is somewhat lacking for reasons of selection, presentation, hygiene and culinary skill. A real shame as the food we ate in Havana on our trip out for the day was both tasty and well presented. The "theme days" at the restaurant serve the same food each time and we did not realise that pork, rice and black beans were the national dishes of Spain, China, Canada as well as Cuba, so I got that wrong didn't I! This being my first visit to Cuba will also be my last visit as I will go back to somewhere cheaper and more luxurious next year.

    Relaxing Paradise

The holiday was superb from start to finish. We couldn’t fault anything. The setting is idyllic and as it is adults only it is very peaceful. There is entertainment should you want it but equally you can avoid it if you want to and the entertainments team are great at allowing you the chance to join in. We liked the beach and pool games each day (thanks Marco) and the piano bar each night. Many British people go to Varadero. I would choose Jibacoa Every single time over the more commercial Varadero. Have to mention:- 1. The staff. Everyone is friendly and cannot do enough for you. The managers Miguel and David spend time talking to you to get your opinion and they genuinely use this to constantly improve the service.. Felt included, valued and special. 2. Cleanliness. The gardens / rooms / pool / beach are immaculate. The team work tirelessly for very little money. There are a few tiles missing in and around the pool but you have to ignore that and open your eyes to the beauty around you. 3. Tour to Havana with Awesome tours (look it up on FB and ask for Julio). Take a private tour and NOT an inflated travel agent tour. You will be treated as an individual not as cattle. 4. The coral. Stunning. We took full face masks and used them every day. Always something new to see in the shallow waters. Unreal. 5. Air conditioning in the room + comfy beds and pillows for us. 6. Peace. 7. Drinks and food. Plenty to choose from and if there is something extra you want, just ask! 8. Use of FB group before going to ask advice / find out more. It is a guests run group. The ONLY thing is I wish I’d known (or thought) was to take my own thermos type cup for the bar to keep drinks cool for longer and to reduce single use plastics. Good for environment and less trips to the bar as they are bigger! We are saving for a return trip at some point in the future and next time will take toiletries, unwanted clothes for adults and children, colouring pencils and books. Cuban families can simply NOT afford much of what we take for granted. Very humbling and our gifts are greatly and genuinely appreciated.

    We’ll be back!

The resort gave us 6 friends from Sweden all that we could have asked for and then some after a hectic but fun week in Havana. The rooms were great, big and clean. The staff so nice and helpful. So calm and relaxing resort. Nos vemos en agosto. Keep up the good work! Saludos Ninni

    Everything was perfect!

4th time in Cuba, best food, best service, best snorkelling, best resort! Off the Varadero strip between Varadero and Havana. Its beautifully landscaped with palm trees, banana trees and all kinds of tropical gardens and plants. A relaxing getaway with excellent snorkelling right off the beach don't hesitate to book this resort. This resort has thought of every little detail to make its customers happy. Water in your fridge every day, 3 a la carte restaraunts. The International was our favorite, they pour you champagne when you sit down and the service was amazing. Had the best steak I've had in a long time even compared to home. Beautifil beach with lots of palapas and beach chairs. The water is clear and clean. A nice combination of sandy beach and coral reef areas for those who like snorkelling and those who don't. Non-motorized water sports included pedal boats, kayaks, snorkelling gear if you don't have your own and a katamaran ride each day. The day we went they took us out to a snorkelling spot where we jumped off and saw more of the amazing coral reef. The gardeners brough coconuts to us at the beach so we had fresh coconut water to drink. 24 hour money exchange at the front desk. Rooms super clean. Double expresso for breakfast at the buffet every morning (I love the Cuban expresso). My husband was very happy with the "camerones" (shrimp) and grilled fish every day at the buffet. They also had beautiful fresh fruit; mango, papaya, guava, watermelon and bananas.
