Thanks for the Memories!
Cuba is a country that I greatly admire. One for the few countries with the courage to stick to their principles in the face of ever increasing pressure from their bullying neighbour. Sticking two fingers up to the USA is a lesson the UK should learn! The Memories resort Jibacoa is a wonderful place to be. Situated half way between exquisite Havana and the beach heaven of Varadero it is a tropical gem that sits on a coral reef behind tree covered mountains. The grounds are well kept, with flowers and different kinds of palm trees everywhere, mango trees, coconut palms, fire trees and spotlessly clean grass lawns make the general ambience very relaxing indeed. Some people have complained that the buildings are old, but I will not. I don't see them as old, sure, the resort is a mature resort, but everything works, everything is functional, everything is clean and well maintained, so I see absolutely no problem at all. The beach is kept clear of rubbish, and the seaweed is removed every morning, but there are some stones in the sand, washed up by recent hurricanes/tropical storms which turn out to be pieces of coral broken off the reef and tossed ashore by the storms. The sea is fantastic, with the reef topography making the sea shallow for 50 - 100 yards from the shore. Snorkelling is superb, but you have to get out past the area of sea grass just off the beach to get to the best bits of the reef. There are kayaks and pedalos that you can take out, and you can be taken out on a catamaran sailing boat as well, all included in the cost of the holiday. The beach bar staff are among the happiest nicest people you will ever meet, Oralys is an absolute star, always singing and dancing, blowing kisses across the beach, she made everyone feel special. The food is adequate. I can't say any more than that. The availability of food for Cubans is restricted due to the USA's on going embargo, which does reflect on the availability of food in the resort restaurants. However, although you may not get an unforgettable gastronomic experience, you will not go hungry, that is certain, The local drinks provided to non diamond club guests are fine. The rum is nice, the beer is good and the bar staff mix some great cocktails, much better in fact than most resorts I have been to. No complaints there. If I had to complain at all I would say that the sheets are left too long before replacing, the sheets on our bed was left for the whole two weeks. I'm sure that if we complained about it that they would be changed, but my point is that we shouldn't have to complain just to have bed sheets changed. Once a week is acceptable, but two weeks I think is pushing it too far. The entertainment team are very good, with some excellent dancing. We were put off a bit with their enthusiasm for picking out audience members to join in with the dancing, we seemed to be targeted rather too often, as as a completely incompetent dancer I did feel slightly uncomfortable with it. However, the shows were great, the aqua show performed by an outside group was superb, and the operatic show was breathtaking with Cuba's answer to the three tenors and a superb soprano. It had the whole audience on their feet wanting more. We visited Vardero, not impressed, we visited Havana - wow! the Tropicana show is something you HAVE to see when in Cuba. No question. Cigar factory and Rum museum are also very good trips. The TUI rep, who names himself Will-I-Am which is a bit corny, but apart from that he is the absolute best, most helpful, professional holiday rep you will ever meet. Any issues will be dealt with confidently and efficiently, trips will be described honestly and unlike most reps you will come across he will put the customer first, profit second. Highly and thoroughly recommended. The piano bar is a great place to be, the beach is the best place to spend the day, the international a-la-carte is the best place to eat and the Tropicana show is the best show in Cuba. Due to the previously mentioned political and commercial pressures on Cuba, the resort has to cope with a limited availability of things and to make do/reuse where other resorts would simply throw away and replace. This is actually a blessing in disguise, because the environmental impact is greatly reduced, and a slight feeling of lower quality for the wealthy visitor is a very small price to pay for the reduction in environmental damage a holiday resort can have, and one I wholeheartedly support. I do not have a problem with giving up the single use shampoo bottles - usually replaced daily in hotel rooms all over the world, for a refillable bottle. I can easily put up with re-using bed linen for more than a single day or two to save washing clean sheets just so they can be said to be replaced every day. After all I do not change bed linen every day at home, and using local produce in the resort restaurant is a fantastic way to experience a different destination. All in all I would say Cuba is my so-far favourite holiday location, and I can't see anything in Cuba beating the Memories Jibacoa. 5 stars for service, 4 stars for luxury (but that's perfect!).
Very relaxing 2 weeks.
Just back from a lovely 2 week break at Memories. For anyone thinking of booking please note by most countries standards this hotel would only be 3 star rated. It's hard to be too critical when the country is in a state with food shortages and staff are trying their best. If you're into your food you will most likely struggle. The general buffet is limited and largely the same most nights. There's 3 a la carte restaurants to use but even those aren't much better. On the plus side they did have fresh mango most days, which felt like a major treat. The fresh bread is also great! The beach itself is lovely but you can't walk too far either side without encountering horrendous rubbish and bad smells. Someone actually said the waste on the road to the campsite is from the hotel itself which is disappointing. Probably not the hotel for you if you're expecting miles of sandy beaches to walk on. There is a coral reef directly in front of the hotel which is great for snorkeling. Also the hotel provide 2 kayaks, some snorkelling equipment, 2 pedalos and catamaran trips out into the sea, all free of charge, which was a great. The hotel could do with refurbishment. The pool has quite a few missing tiles. The rooms are pleasant but shabby. There's no aircon in the buffet restaurant, just ceiling fans on low. In fact there didn't seem to be anywhere other than your room to stay cool. Aircon was unbelievably noisy in our room, even with earplugs in. The free pool in the games room was a lovely touch. It's in a remote location but ideal for trips to Havana and Varadero. The staff are lovely, especially Orialys on the beach bar who is like a ray of sunshine. I'd say the drinks are the best thing at the hotel, although their local coke is weirdly flat seconds after it's poured. Go with low expectations and you might just end up having a great time!
Home from home at the resort
As a repeat guest, a special thank you to the professional support of management and staff, making us feel so welcome. Cuba Day was fun especially the horse showing off his skills. The buffet food was well presented and good variety of choices. The sugar bowl structures, made from colored sugar were wonderful as were the deserts this year. Thank you all.
Recently returned from a wonderful 2 week vacation at Memories Jibacoa
My husband and I have been home now for approximately 3 weeks after having our annual 2 week vacation in a place as close to heaven as one can be. This may sound like a bit of an exaggeration but it you are a repeat guest, like ourselves, you will totally understand. The weather was amazing as usual, allowing us to enjoy the beach with the green and/or yellow flag days. Not a jelly fish in sight!! The weather allowed for lots of snorkelling which is very close to shore, enabling those of us that are not comfortable being in deep water, to enjoy the many varieties of colourful fish we only see on TV. For those concerned about shade on the beach, the trees on the beach, have actually recovered quite nicely, and have produced more foliage as a result of being pruned by the terrible storm. There are also, a vast amount of palapas that have been made for guests to use. Please for those not in Diamond Club, be aware that the blue chairs are for you, and the grey for Diamond Club. Better signage would be appreciated by all, as it can be very embarrassing for the guests to be asked to move. The food in Cuba does create many conversations that is true. Well, we have to say the food was just fine and plentiful during our visit. It may not always be as hot to your liking, or seasoned to your liking, or the variety you would prefer, but that is Cuba. You are in a beautiful location, not having to do anything for yourself but decide when to get ready to have a meal, (prepared by someone else), nap on a lounger, have a dip in the ocean or pool, (the list can go on and on), but most importantly you are being waited on hand and foot by hard working staff that always have a smile on their faces, no matter what the day has brought them. To top it off while you are thoroughly enjoying your vacation someone is cleaning your room and washroom! My husband and I have enjoyed Diamond Club since it was first offered at Jibacoa and have never been disappointed. Would we recommend it, definitely. The concierges, David and Yeny are very helpful and attentive. Thank you both, you are doing a wonderful job!! Then there is Sarah, what can we say about Sarah that has not been already said. There are no words, just hugs!!! We enjoyed all the al la carte restaurants, and cannot say enough about the excellent attention to service. A special thank you to the wonderful chef at Bella Cucina for making an amazing pasta dish!! Not just once for me but twice!! You have great talent!! My husband and I want to apologize for possibly creating a mixologist feud between Yeniol, and Joel. Let’s hope you will remain friends!! Elaine, our Diamond Club breakfast and lunch waitress is wonderful. Every morning and afternoon she greets everyone with that beautiful smile. Hugs to you. David, the general manager. He is everywhere and I mean everywhere!! Always smiling, patting staff on the backs, greeting them by their names, dancing, singing, talking to guests....making sure all is as it should be. He is one of the greatest assets in making Memories Jibacoa a truly wonderful vacation spot. To summarize, if you want to relax, be pampered, enjoy a small resort set in a beautiful location, a day trip to Havana, snorkelling right off the beach, and staff that are happy, this is the place for you. Just remember you are in Cuba. Not any other island in the Caribbean can offer you what it and its people can. Embrace it.
Great trip with family
We were at memories from may 3 to to may 14. We went with family members whom are also repeat guests. We had an awesome time due to the hard working staff and management. The buffet food was good and plentiful. The beach bar and restaurant was very good for a nice lunch in a beautiful setting .Enjoyed the delicious cappuccino prepared by the beautiful Orlay's everyday. They had tasty burgers at the pool snack bar cooked to order by a very friendly young man. The repeaters dinner was excellent with great service and David the hotel manager made it a point to talk with every single guest and personally thank everyone for their continued loyalty to the hotel. Even if you a first time guest you will be treated like you are family and the management team are available to solve any problem you may have, big or small. Kiki and Sara the P.R team are always interacting with guests to make sure you are having a good time. The bartenders are very friendly and provide great service, The reception desk always very helpful and friendly. Our housekeeper did a great job and kept our room spotless. The gardeners do such a great job keeping the grounds beautifully manicured and clean. The beach is a snorkelers paradise. The pool is big and clean, There are always lots of sun beds both at the beach and pool, don't have to play the towel game LOL. Thank you to all the awesome 10 star staff who go above and beyond their duties to make everyone's vacation the best it could be. You are the reason we return. Take care and we will see you soon.
