We recently chose to stay at the Intercontinental in Cartagena, which sadly turned out to be a disappointment. After splurging a bit looking for a nice ocean view in their select Club rooms, we found ourselves in a musky damp room which would be acceptable for lesser hotels, but certainly not this one. Turns out, they know about the damp musky smell in the rooms for quite some time (given the canned answers to year-plus-old reviews complaining of the smell) and haven’t done anything about it. Stay clear of room 2506 if you can, hopefully the whole floor doesn’t have this problem. I didn’t try to get the room changed as it was only a one-nighter, but I did feel compelled to share this with other travelers. Sorry to say this but it will be a hard-pass next time around for this place.
Higher end hotel stay without the high end prices.
Ocean view on a high floor made the stay that much better. I loved how the staff didn't wake you at 8am to ask if they can clean the room. Out house keeping lady didn't come around till about 11am which was great because we were already out of the room. The room had a huge King size bead, which was super comfortable (not too soft not too hard) with nice size fluffy pillows. Plenty of room for our clothes in the closet. The room had a safe, iron and ironing board. The Bathroom was just like home with the toilet in its own closed door closet. The shower had good pressure with plenty of hot water. It also had a double sink vanity which is key for couples. The breakfast ran till 10:30 am and although they had precooked eggs as part of the Buffett they still make them to order. Plenty of meats and cheeses, alot of fresh fruit and juices available. Hot coffee was brought over as often as you wanted. The pool was the highlight of the stay with a bar that served drinks. Plenty of seating everywhere with great views of the ocean. The water seemed clean and not overly chlorine'd. They provided large towels at the pool and the restroom was right next to the pools so you didn't have far to go. It is definitely kid friendly.
Fantastic hotel overlooking beaches and minutes from walled city
Great hotel - love the InterContinental chain! Wonderful rooms and a large pool that overlooks the Boca Grande beach and views of the city. Around a 10 min walk to the walled city, this hotel is in a great location. The staff were wonderful - front desk were awesome and attentive to anything we needed. Pool is great, however can be quite windy. Cocktails are ok.....however the breakfest at the hotel is great and should not be missed. Overall, really enjoyed this place and would certainly return and recommend.
Roof-Top Pool, Ocean View & a constant reminder of Security
My good friend and I were visiting Cartagena and decided on the Intercontinental. First off, the staff are amazingly accommodating and personable. They help you in any way they can. The location of the hotel is superb: right across the street from the beach...which by the way you will NOT enjoy because the local hustlers are relentless and pushy. Trying to sell you everything from friendship bracelets to coke. The hotel is near quite a few eateries, pharmacies & currency exchanges. Very convenient. Next door/part of a casino. Every time we left the hotel, the doormen would take down our names, room number and the taxi driver's license plate number. I guess security really wants to cover all its bases. You're a very short taxi drive from old town which is stunning and quaint. We had a complete safe and fun time in Colombia and the people are so sweet. Highly recommend this hotel. I recommend taking the Genre De Mar tour to the islands. They're BEAUTIFUL!
Nice hotel, great sunset view
Good hotel, clean spacious rooms, great view to the see. Only a short 10 minutes ride by taxi to the historical center. The breakfast is a little disappointing, not too many options. The restaurant is good, I especially liked the ceviche and the sea food specialities. The sunset view from the pool is amazing.
