Iberostar Tucan in Playacar
This was a two-week all-inclusive vacation with Westjet Vacations (the last week of April to the first week of May) with two flights to get to Cancun and two flights to return. The flight from our home town to Calgary was good except for landing in a snow storm. We stayed overnight in a hotel and returned to the airport early the next morning to get our flight to Cancun. Were told that our aircraft was not available due to the weather the previous night. There was another Westjet flight departing to Cancun two hours after our flight was scheduled to depart and its aircraft was only one hour late departing. After several hours we were told that Westjet had an aircraft scheduled to go to Dominion Republic that would be sent to Cancun instead. We departed about four hours later than scheduled. The flight was the normal excellent service that we always get from Westjet. I do wonder what happened to our original aircraft. If it was unavailable due to the weather why were other aircraft available? Getting through customs and security in Cancun airport was fast and efficient. We boarded a van with four other passengers and spent about two hours getting to our resort because we were the third and last stop. Our resort was the Iberostar Tucan in Playacar which is in a gated community next to Playa del Carmen. There are two Iberostar resorts side by side (Tucan and Quetzal), we stayed in the Tucan but could use all the facilities in both resorts. Check-in went quickly but my wife and I were given a room with two small double beds instead of a king bed that we had requested when we booked. We were told The that a room with a king bed would be available in three days and we could have a special rate of only $40usd per night extra instead of the regular $79usd per night. The standard room we were given was in the building furthers from the beach but was close to the lobby, buffet, restaurants and entertainment. We were happy with our room but extremely disappointed with the beds. It was after 9pm and we had not eaten since breakfast so we went down to the buffet for supper. There was an excellent selection of tasty foods including many vegetables. After dinner we went to the lobby bar for a drink. All the drinks during our stay were good and consistent in all of the bars. OUR ROOM Our second-floor room was very nice, clean, quiet and in a convenient location to everything in the resort (a five to ten-minute walk to the beach and pool). The balcony was nice, overlooked part of the resort next door through the trees that made up the border between resorts. The towels were changed every day. The fridge was well stocked with bottled water, beer and soda. The first day I left a 20 peso tip in the room and requested more bottled water and every day we received extra water. THE POOLS AND THE BEACH There were three pools, the main pool, a sports pool and an adult only pool bar. Most of the activates were at the main pool and there was plenty of palapas for shade. I never saw any sports at the sports pool and it was a quiet area to relax. The adult only pool bar was a swim up bar down in a cenote and the only place to sit was in the water, no place for lounges. Near the main pool was a building containing the scuba dive shop and a beach towel station. We exchanged our beach towels every day and there was never a shortage of towels. The dive shop was run by Dressel Divers. I did 12 dives with them including two dives in Cozumel. The shop was well run and all the staff were excellent. The white sand beach was wide and long and we could walk for about 45 minutes in each direction. There was the seaweed problem as always. Some days very bad and some days not so bad. They worked on it all day long every day. There were many palapas and lounges on the beach so it was no problem getting a shady spot. The buffet in the Tucan was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was a smaller buffet (it is an ala carte for dinner) on the beach open for breakfast and lunch with seating inside and outside. It was extremely busy between 12 and 1 pm. The inside area is enclosed with a net to keep birds out but sometimes birds get inside. There was snack bar nearby with hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, ribs, soft ice cream etc.Nearby is another food station that prepares a different food every day, wraps one day, tacos the next, etc. Nearby was a small ice cream (hard ice cream) stand and a beach bar. Between the beach and the snack bar was a station for washing off sand. Every evening there was good live music in the lobby and the theatre. The staff in the bars, buffet very helpful and friendly. The entertainment staff at the pool, theatre and lobby were amazing. There were many activities to join at the main pool and on the beach. The staff was very friendly and entertaining and worked hard to make activities fun for participants and spectators. My wife enjoyed aqua fit in the pool every day while I was scuba diving. We had a great time at this resort and would be very happy to return if we could get a proper bed in our room. On our return trip we had only 90 minutes to switch aircraft in Calgary including going from international to domestic terminals. We were concerned about getting our connecting flight especially when our flight was 40 minutes late leaving Cancun. We touched down on the runway in Calgary ten minutes before we were scheduled to board our connecting flight. As soon as the door opened Stephanie from Westjet entered and called us and another couple by name. She said she had been monitoring our flight and was going to help us catch our connecting flights. She escorted us to security and transported us to our gates. Thank you very much Stephanie. You saved our trip!
The BEST All-Inclusive Resort
This is the BEST all-inclusive resort ever, as there is nothing more that you could need. The food and drinks were perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the buffets. The Mexican and Japanese restaurants were delicious. The entertainment is fun and the shows are great. I cant even explain how happy the staff is all the time and how great they are. In particular shout out to the bartender in the theatre named Severiano who was so awesome and such a hard worker!! We went to the bar every night during the show just to talk to him and enjoyed every single drink he made. It is SO clean here everywhere you go at all times of the day. The rooms have a ton of space and are beautifully modern. There are animals everywhere in the jungle, which is the coolest thing since there are monkeys, tucans, peacocks, agoutis, flamingos, birds of all kinds, and more! The beach is beautiful, although there is seaweed, the workers work nonstop to remove it. The pool is great too. We will be coming here again in the future and will recommend this place to everyone! It is so luxurious for an affordable price.
