I stood at the Iberostar Bavaro from July 24th-29th to attend my cousin's wedding as the Maid-of-Honor. I will break up this review into two parts, one part for the vacation as a whole and one for the wedding day specifically. As for the room, it was definitely out of date. There were no outlets for phone chargers available, we had to unplug lamps in the room to charge our phones and the decor and the walls were old, but nothing too awful to complain about. Housekeeping was amazing during our stay. They came in twice a day and cleaned everything and fully restocked our mini bar with tons of water, soda and beer. The food at the buffet was very good. Lunch and breakfast was the same daily and dinner had a ton of options that were changed nightly. The seafood night was amazing and I wished it happened more than once during our trip. I went to one restaurant during my stay, the French one and it was disgusting. The service was amazing, but the food was gross. I ordered the lamb dish and it was overcooked and had no seasoning on it. My friend ordered the shrimp dish and said the shrimp was good, but that was all. The pool on the property was very great. It was clean, the bars were fast and the employees were always friendly. I only encountered 2 rude employees during my stay, one at the ice cream parlor and another at the buffet by the lobby, which is amazing, granted how many people you interact with daily. All other employees were all smiles and friendly and very fun. The beach was beautiful, but covered in seaweed. I am not sure if this is a seasonal thing, because I've heard from people who have been here before, that the beach is usually beautiful. I did not mind the seaweed since you are in the ocean, but many members of the wedding party did not go in the water because of it. The resort is big, but not big enough where you can't get around by yourself. We were traveling with young children and the mother of the bride does have a problem with walking. You are able to call a golf cart to escort you places around the resort, but good luck getting them to show up within 10 minutes. Many people joked about "island time" being a thing and it is true! People are way more relaxed and move at a slower pace there, so keep that in mind while waiting around for employees for help. Overall, I would give the resort 4.5 stars if I could. I had to give this review 3 stars because of the wedding day. There was never a time I felt unsafe on the resort, the food was good and the place was clean. I do wish the alcoholic drinks were stronger, as I never got a good buzz besides one night at the nightclub. Before the Ceremony: As for the wedding. My cousin got married on July 27th at 5:30 pm. Her bridal party was very small, consisting of me, the bride, her mother and one bridesmaid. We arrived at the salon at noon for the bride's hair appointment and our makeup appointment. There was a problem with the room we were given and we had to wait an additional 20 minutes for this to be sorted out. Then we began to get ready, the three of us ironing our bridal party robes for pictures and showering, when immediately, a knock on the door and we are rudely told we are not ready and we need to be downstairs ASAP for our hair and makeup. This would not have been a problem if there was not the hiccup in the beginning about the room we were given. There was one person doing the brides hair and one person supposed to do makeup for all 4 of us. Obviously, this took much of our time and we were not finsihed with makeup and the brides hair until 4 pm. My cousin then had to push back the photographer and we all had to scramble to meet the photographer. The makeup and the hair did come out beautiful and $45 for makeup was not a bad price. They did not put any type of primer on our faces, so I did end up sweating half of mine off before the ceremony even began. The Ceremony: The ceremony was located on the beach. My cousin was told there would be a stage type of setup for the party to walk on during the ceremony. As I mentioned before, the bride's mother is unable to walk. There was no stage setup, instead, a long white towel type of fabric was across the sand for us to walk on. Sinking heels was an inconvenience, but not the biggest issue that was faced. Having a platform or a stage would have given the bride's mother the opportunity to walk her only daughter down the aisle. Instead, the bride's mother was left completely out of view of the ceremony, basically discarded like an afterthought. We did a rehersal the morning of the wedding and we discovered the bride's mother would not be able to walk in the sand. The wedding planner was present during this rehearsal. Myself and the bride did not fret about her mother not being able to escort her down the aisle, because we assumed the platform or stage was not set up yet and this was only the rehearsal, so it would be ok. Sadly, this was not the case. The bride was rushed down the aisle and her mother was left behind. Luckily, another family member left their viewing of the wedding and got a chair for the mother of the bride and did her best to seat her to where she could at least see the wedding unfold. A bride only walks down the aisle once. This moment was stolen from this mother and daughter because of poor planning and misleading information from the resort. Looking back on this day, we won't see any pictures of the mother kissing her daughter's cheek and handing her off to her husband, we won't see the smile in her eyes as she gives her daughter over to her new life. Instead, we'll see my cousin walking down by herself, doing the best she can to not let her smile falter, because her mother is not there with her. After the ceremony, no one told the guest where to go for the reception. The guests were given an itinerary earlier that day, but it would have been nice to have a verbal announcement instead of guests just standing around not knowing what to do. The shining star that day was the photographer, she picked up all of the slack from the resort and was guiding people and being as helpful as she possibly could. After the ceremony and when the guest finally departed to the reception, the photographer called for a golf cart to bring the wedding party to the reception. We had to wait at least 30 minutes, if not longer, for a cart to arrive. Ever hear of a bride being late to her own wedding? Well, this time it wasn't her fault. The Reception: When we finally arrived at the reception, half the guest were outside complaining about the DJ. The wedding party was obviously frustrated at this point from being late and now hearing complaints as soon as we arrive. We all looked to the wedding planner to help, but she did not. Instead, the wedding planner felt it was appropriate to run to the bride on her big day with every little problem that occurred. The DJ got our entrance songs wrong and messed up when fireworks on the dancefloor were supposed to go off. The music for the night was awful. This was a Spanish wedding! Spanish people love to dance and no one was on the floor. When it was time for speeches, the poor bridesmaid was forgotten about by the MC. The MC was so monotoned, you could tell he wasn't having a good time. The reception was awful due to poor employees from the resort.
Awesome family vacation
Had an awesome time with our family at the Iberostar Selection Bavaro resort. Awesome selection of foods including seafood. Rooms were well maintained and lots of space. We had two rooms with side by side balconies. Our rooms were close to the pools which was ideal to get a good spot in the mornings. Upon our arrival Samuel (one of the workers) introduced himself and told us to meet him the next day to book restaurant dinner reservations. Samuel was the kindest, sweetest young man. All the workers seemed great, but there was something about Samuel. He made sure we were set for the week. One disappointment was the rep for Air Transat . We didn’t see him once. We checked everyday and he was either coming later or not coming on that day. The other reps did a fantastic job trying to help, but it would have been nice to see the Air Transat rep. I would highly recommend staying at this resort. When you stay at Bavaro you can also go to the other two resorts that are attached.
Amazing holiday, fantastic staff and the hotel makes it!
We were upgraded to the bavaro in a junior suite following building works at bahia principe esmeralda and it was fantastic! Staff couldn't do enough for us at meal times and serving drinks while around the pool. A huge shout out to the entertainment staff, black panther, bugs bunny, and B-breako who were absolutely fantastic throughout the day. All the entertainment staff were brilliant! Alberlly was fab, he served us with a smile around the pool day in day out, such a lovely happy person! The buffet was great, neither of us struggled to find something we liked, the range of food was excellent. The speciality restaurants were great too, we went to the Japanese, cajun, Italian, steak and oriental restaurant, food and service at these was fab, the only let down was the Italian as the food was average. Bar staff in the lobby bar were always friendly and served you with a smile, nothing was too much trouble and they are so efficient that they replaced your drinks before they were empty!! The only minor issue we had was that we had to call down to ask for the fridge/minibar to be refilled, it wasnt refilled on a daily basis and at 32+ degrees bottled water would have been appreciated, but as soon as we requested someone did arrive at the villa with supplies. Other than that we had a amazing holiday and were sad to leave!
We arrived at the Iberostar selection Bavaro on August 1st. We were shuttled fr the main lobby to another location called the star prestige lounge were we did Not receive a welcome drink nor towel as described in their own advantages. We were however greeted by an overzealous employee who after asking us 3 dif times how long our stay would be still omitted to give us the hotel credits(coupons). The following day she practically came running to us saying how she forgot to give us said credits upon arrival and asked if we could pick them up later... Ultimately they were being held "hostage" because she wanted us to take the prestige presentation which in all honesty,we might of, had she gone about it differently. We only received these coupons on our 4th day(!!) after calling in a complaint through Air Canada employee relations. That night we also had for the First and ONLY time the turn down service with chocolates (also advertised as a benefit). Receiving this service for the 1st time after 3 nights felt more like invasion of privacy than a service unfortunately. No hotel employee contacted us afterwards and no compensation was ever offered. In the end only one coupon would of been advantageous for us but because of the delay in getting them we simply chose to no longer use it. A lamp that was already broken was only replaced on our 4th day. And we are still waiting for one of the reading lights to be fixed. But of course this is no longer desired since we are now on our last day here. The free bottles of wine selection is sparse and the sample machine never worked. Thankfully some staff members do stand out for their excellent service. These are bartenders Daniel, Santiago and Ruben from the lobby bar. Our daily maid Milena excelled in not only cleaning our room but creating lovely displays with the towels and fresh flowers. Also worth mentioning is Michael at the lobby buffet.
great place to vacation very comfortable, great service, food was great lots of variety, very clean room and hotel surroundings, entertainment was wonderful, great hospitality, pool area great, bar service was great
