I just returned from a trip where I spent four days at the Hyatt. I had to think before writing a review and what I would want to know before staying here. Overall, not displeased - didn’t leave miserable certainly, but if I were to return to Maui I might try a different location. First of all, the lobby is beautiful - they have a nice ABC type store available (a Macy’s - which I found amusing and fun) and a stunning view of the ocean and the island of Lanai right from the lobby. The woman at check-in was lovely - we received fresh leis and a bottle of champagne once they heard I was there in part for my 40th. Most staff were perfectly kind, but I did notice a good chunk of them didn’t bother to say hello when you passed them. Other places in Hawaii are big on that, so it was noticeable here when they didn’t. They have a resort host table, for example and people there rarely spoke to you. Their valet staff is second to none - fast and so pleasant. I cannot compliment them highly enough. We stayed in the Napoli Tower which was okay, seemed a little dated and it was a bit of a walk to our rooms, but I believe I did request a quiet room. The beds were very comfortable. We had an ocean view. The balconies are small with just a small table and chairs but we found we couldn’t sit out there because it got the sun all day and was just too hot. I was very disappointed in the main pool at the Hyatt, we found we much preferred the pools at the residence club which we had access to - those were lovely. The main pool had so many beds for rental (as many resorts do I will acknowledge), it made finding seating hard or seating in the shade hard. The other chairs were also often behind those beds for rental (not all, but a lot). I don’t believe the pictures of the pool area that the Hyatt provides are complete honest in that regard. That pool area was also nosier then the pool at the residence. The grotto bar was neat looking, but always very crowded and so loud, but again, in fairness, I think that’s to be expected. There’s not too much of a beach - it’s small and narrow, but was well maintained and we were aware of that before we stayed there. The one thing I wasn’t impressed with was the food from Umalu - it just wasn’t good. Their servers were very friendly though. Even something as simple as their Salsa wasn’t our favorite. We choose to eat off property most of the time. Their breakfast at Swan Court was okay and we didn’t try to larger restaurants (a little nervous after Umalu). So, wasn’t blown away by the resort, but didn’t leave unhappy. They did an okay job. I did notice one of their towers was being worked on, maybe they are in the process of upgrading across the board.
Ohana vibe in a big resort setting
Don't let the critical reviews fool you, this in one impressive and grand resort with excellent customer service. While some of the rooms are in need of an upgrade which would appear to be forthcoming (one tower was undergoing major renovations during our stay), the overall grounds are in fantastic shape. Having recently stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai, we expected this property to be a significant step down in quality and luxury based on prior reviews and we could not have been more wrong. The property is sprawling, yet welcoming with friendly staff everywhere we went. When we stopped to look at the gorgeous tropical birds in the main foyer, we were greeted by an employee that offered to take one of the cockatoos out for us to pet. Even the koi and penguins seemed to be excited to see us (maybe thought we had food?). The Japanese garden is lovely to walk through and the numerous flamingos, ducks, geese and swans were surprisingly comfortable with us walking right next to them. The gym and spa have a fantastic ocean view (former is open 24 hours) and the entire property essentially sits on its own private beach that is very accessible and had kid friendly conditions the entire week of our stay. The pool offerings at this property and the nearby Hyatt Residence (access also included) were fantastic and kept us busy for days exploring the waterfalls, water slides, underground grottos, and kids fountains/pools. Self service parking is a bit of a walk unless you're staying at the tower adjacent to the Residence, but valet is only a nominal amount more and well worth it. We ate at the club lounge daily (sometimes multiple times a day) and found it excellent. The staff there epitomize the aloha spirit and always kept us busy with suggestions for local attractions and family friendly activities all over the island. Winetta, Lisa Lani and Alana Marie and my daughters' new favorite aunties!
A Wonderful Place to Stay
We really enjoyed our stay here at Hyatt Regency Maui! The location was perfect for us and the amenities were more than we expected. It was also good to see that Hyatt is in the process of making some big improvements so that if we were to come back it would be even better.
We were treated with an oceanfront room with full view of the pool, the beach and Lanaii, which was awesome. The room itself was just okay. Plenty of space, but it had a queen bed plus a double bed. Clean overall, but was expecting nicer amenities for a Hyatt Regency property. Pool area is great with lots of sun all day and plenty of food options.
We went to the Hyatt in Maui to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I did a lot of research beforehand, the reviews were great, good discounts online so we were excited. When we arrived we were told one of the towers was under renovation so there weren’t that many rooms to choose from. The room felt dated, flickering fluorescent light in tiny bathroom. Nowhere to put clothes at all, no separate shower- felt like a motel but a $600/ night motel. The walls were so thin, 6 am kids screaming down the hall. I spoke to a wonderful manager named Ariel. I told her I was surprised because other Hyatt’s have been more deluxe experiences. She was so apologetic. She upgraded our room and it was a world of difference. I cannot tell you how gorgeous the renovated room was! When they are done with the whole renovation I’m bringing my whole family back. It was like a different hotel. The facilities like the spa and gym were great. The grounds are really nice. They have swans, penguins and lots of parrots. I had one of the best massages of my life with Rose. I hope the hotel will improve its morning coffee at breakfast! It’s Hawaii! Coffee is one of its things! They need to do better. The beach is thin right now- the sand excellent but not really wide enough to set up on the beach. The tide may change and the beach might get bigger again, if it’s important to you you can take a car to another beach area close by or walk a bit down the path to find a wider beach. The food at the pool was great. The drinks and food are so expensive but they have a happy hour. Overall, go and pay more for an upgraded suite- it’s really worth the splurge. Or wait until the whole hotel is renovated. Thank you Ariel! You’re the best.
