    Overpriced for what you get

We stayed at this resort on a family vacation. There were 10 family members including 3 kids and 2 teenagers. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are clean. However, they are not very detail oriented and there isn’t much to do on the resort. Considering the price of the room, there should have been more to do and free coffee in the morning (at least). Pros- The pools are nice, there are washing machines in the rooms and the grounds are clean and well maintained. There are 2 good restaurants in the plaza across the street (but don’t try to walk there as it is a busy 4 lane street and difficult to cross). The grocery store is close to stock the kitchen. If you prefer to eat in, having a kitchen is convenient. Valet parking is included. Cons- The front desk people always sound like you are annoying them with your inquiries. However, the valet people were very friendly. Other than swimming pools, there is no entertainment at all. No kids activities or evening activities for adults. There is one restaurant with a bar, that’s it. Since the resort is not all inclusive, food choices are limited to that one restaurant (especially if you don’t rent a car). The restaurant has weird policies. We went running in the morning, the water coolers had not been filled and the restaurant was reluctant to give out cups of water. When we asked for a cup of water, we were directed to a fountain which was hidden between towel machines and we had to hunt for it. They won’t let you sit and have tea, even if the restaurant is empty; one can only sit if ordering a full meal. There is only poolside drink service if you rent a cabana for the day which is expensive. The cleaning service made our beds every day, but didn’t leave fresh towels and by the end of the stay we had a pile of dirty towels and no clean ones at all. There is nothing for free! If you want coffee in the morning you must buy it from the general store on the premises. If you want to snorkel you must rent them. The beach is small and not good for snorkeling. If you stay here, rent a car and plan on leaving the resort for meals and activities.

    Not service driven

I spent a weekend here with some friends after spending a week in Maui with family in a house in Wailea (that was wonderful). The hotel is a nice place to take children. But if you want a resort feel with service, this might not be the place for you. Services and customer service are limited. This is a timeshare property (Vrbo+Air B&B), which I think is why the service is limited. We stayed on the hotel side but cleaning is every other day. The front desk help isn't helpful or accommodating. I needed a cup of raw rice because I dropped my phone at the beach and they told me I needed to go to the store to purchase. Then when I went to the 1 hotel restaurant they told me they didn't have any rice...yet rice is on the menu. Then I realized maybe they thought I was lying and needed it to cook (not the case). I'm not sure why they call it a resort. There is no beachfront service. You have to pay for a beach chair, umbrella, bogging board, everything! There are no really resort like amenities that don't come with a charge. However, if I had small kids and my vacation was only about them it's a nice place for them. The rooms are a good size (1 bdr), although we had a roach in our bathroom the last day, but all in all, the rooms are clean. This is a below average but not poor hotel. But really depends on what you're looking for. It's not a place I'd go back, or recommend to adults only. PS... The valet team was great, friendly and helpful!

    Nice place for kids

We enjoyed our stay at Honua Kai. Be sure to get a two or three bedroom suite if you are bringing kids. It’s so easy with the suite. There is a grocery store right behind the hotel complex so it’s easy to stock your shelves and eat at home. There are grills out by the pool so you can even cookout. The pool has a slide and a small lazy river that does not have a current. The beach is small but very nice. The are lots of little places to take pictures of family along the beach line. There is a place to rent paddle boards and other water toys a short walk down the boardwalk toward the Westin. There is a great restaurant on the property that is very well known in the area. The staff was courteous, nice and honest. All in all a good place to stay for a family. If it was just my husband and I, I think I would stay at the Grand Hyatt down the street. It was AMAZING! Just a few things to note that were not great: It’s busy so don’t assume you can get a late checkout. They will charge you a portion of the price of a night’s rental (so more than $200). There are timeshare rentals here (might want to check that out and see if it’s cheaper on VRBO 👍) There are towel machines to take towels. Only use them if you are in a timeshare. They are not for the hotel guests. Otherwise, have a great time!

    Houna Kai Resort & Spa

One of fanciest hotels I’ve ever been to, it has a pool, with 3 pool, 6-7 hot tubs, there are many kiddie pool areas, at least one in each pool. When I went, they were working on construction for new towers.

The resort was very nice, beautiful views, friendly people, very clean.

Room was very nice, clean, great view from 3rd floor. Pools were very nice! It was a pretty good location. We did have to go some distance for the activities, but we also got to see more of the island in doing so.
