Gorgeous Property With Lots To See & Do
Spent 7 nights at sister properties in the Waikoloa Beach Resort property, but spent lots of time at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. I am definitely not a "big resort" type of traveler, but I have to admit that this place is gorgeous. It's enormous, but well maintained. Could be seen as a big, overpriced tourist trap, but there is a lot to do without dropping a fortune. The lagoon is a great place to swim/snorkel for young kids and beginners (my stepsons saw eels and turtles their first time in the water). You can get very close to the dolphins at Dolphin Quest for free and the pools are great. Although there is really no beach on the property, the scenery out toward Buddha Point is stunning and the sunset is to die for. My fiance did use the Koahala Spa and Beauty Luxe Salon on the property and while she enjoyed the experiences, both charged 5-star prices while not providing 5-star service. Overall, this is a cool place. Much of it is ridiculously overpriced, but if you are careful, you can enjoy it without taking out a second mortgage
WHAT A SPOT
Great place to stay, amazing resort, many amenities, incredible staff. Little pricey but it is the Hilton. Super great layout and also just the atmosphere. For how large the resort is it is very homey feeling
Different strokes for different folks
A lot of people love this resort, but for us, it wasn't a match made in heaven. Oceanfront Makai rooms face north and get no direct sunlight in January. The rooms on the ground floor near the pool area are especially dark. The Hilton Waikoloa was built in the late 1980s and is due for a major refurbishment -- we thought the rooms were dated and needed modernization. We also found that on-site food to be exorbitantly priced (snack-bar hamburgers for $17, ice cream scoops for $6), and rental rates for things like kayaks or paddleboards to be unreasonably expensive. The hotel occupies a beautiful setting that many families with children love, but for us, it was too reminiscent of the man-made, corporate Hawaii that we thought had gone out of style long ago.
Beautiful, large resort with walking paths and an resort train to get you from one end to the other. Sandy, protected lagoon safe for swimming with sea turtles! Walking distance to quaint Waikola Village for groceries and a couple of shops and restaurants. If you are looking for long sandy beaches, Kona is not the place, but if you are looking for a relaxing vacation where you can do a lot of walking, sitting by the pool, and soaking up the sun you will enjoy yourselves.
