Amazing resort...But don't bother upgrading to Diamond Club
My husband and I recently stayed here with 2 other couples. We all agreed we would all go back. The resort was amazing, food was fantastic and the majority of the staff are extremely friendly and professional and the resort is very clean. Why I say to not bother upgrading to Diamond Club is because we did when we booked (the other couples booked standard) and everything was great until we declined their presentation to buy into the timeshare for $25,000! After that, we didn't even see our butler, and when we called to have coffee or towels brought to the room, nothing would show up. One couple that booked standard did pay and sign up for the timeshare (it's worth it for their lifestyle) and they were treated like royalty after. The other couple wasn't offered the timeshare and they still got excellent service. Also, they had no restrictions on pool use or restaurants. So what is the point? Anyhow, we will still definitely go back but will book the standard room next time.
Fantastic Resort for my first time at the Royalton
Im going to start off by my one negative review - as they check you in concierge sits you down and goes over a map and some "smart dollars" they give you for upgrades at the resort, they also try and trick you into a presentation that's an hour and a half and they give you a gift of a 4day 5night vacation free. we wernt interested and the guy offered us a free couples massage, when he pointed to it, it was a $300 massage PLUS hydrotherapy. So we said why not, and agreed. After them asking us a ton of personal information (marketing strategy) they again tell us our gift that we were receiving which was $100 towards the couples massage. We said no that isnt what he promised us, they called US confused. At that point we knew it was for the timeshare and we just said sorry, we aren't interested plus you've gone back on the massage you told us we would receive. They were apologetic and let us go, but came up to my fiance at the pool later (i don't know how they found him) and asked about the "presentation" again and he said again sorry but we aren't interested. the next day a supervisor called our room number and again asked about it. So all in all my bad review was they were too pushy for this timeshare. DON'T go to the presentation. GOod review: Check in was prompt - we originally booked a king suite through our travel agent but when we checked in they said we had 2 queens - we were easily able to switch to the room we booked but still kind of odd. rooms were great, clean, modern, nice big shower and jacuzzi tub, not to mention the bed was super comfortable. Our cleaning person Joico was great too always refilling our water bottles when requested. We were at the main pool everyday, our servers Manuel was fantastic, always on the ball asking for drinks with a smile on his face. I found going up to the pool bar on the standing side took forever for them to take your order but oh well. Huge shoutout to Chuck - the Tiger! - party time! he was so fun and always came over to our group to say hello. Beach was nice to walk on but water was full of seaweed and sometimes so was the beach. Food was fantastic. breakfast buffet was so good, had an omelette every morning - worth the wait! I found the Snack Hut - Nibbles - always ran out of food, the one day i went there she was out of everything except nacho chips - mind you they didn't have the queso cheese or beans it states it comes with - kind of disappointing.. For the restaurants we ate at the steak house, japanese sushi & kabachi - all really good, we ate at the italian place twice it was SO good. their pizzas were awesome and so were their pastas when all we were craving was carbs. all the servers at every restaurant were polite, and did a great job. Drinks at all the bars were very good as well, had multiple different martinis (espresso, cucumber, dirty vodka) and they were all great - think we drank them dry of their cucumber vodka because they "ran out" and never replenished it. We were there for a wedding and everything went beautifully, ceremony on the beach was really nice and reception on the beach was great too. Typical resort food served family style but still good, servers were always on point and the bartenders were really fun - especially Fernando (think tht was his name) Entertainment was good too, they had some dancing ones during the day at the main pool, aqua aerobics which i tried to do everyday, they did some trivia which was fun, also night entertainment they did a lion king reenactment - they had live bands in the lobby upstairs which was cool along with dancers. On top of all the positives i felt safe while being at the resort. Being a young women i wasn't sure how i was going to feel but by the second day i could tell this was a safe resort and could freely walk around. I would definitely go back to this resort, only thing i would change is maybe staying in the Hideaway Adult only side. the vibe over there was different in a good way, and they had extra perks.
Nice resort, not quite a 5 star.
To each their own and this reflects the week we had at this resort. The property is nice and clean and most of staff is friendly and working hard. Check in was poor. We were told to wait in a certain line as many of us arrived at the same time. When the people in front of us finished checking in, the front desk attendant went in the back office, then came back and went to the other side of the reception, then back in the back, everyone was checked in we were the last ones and she never came back out. I mean how hard was it to tell us she was done for the day and to wait in someone else's line? By then several other couples and families had showed up and we had to start the wait all over. Quite painful with a tired and hungry 2 year old. I tried to pay for an upgrade but the price was ridiculous so we waited until the sunday and got a reasonable upgrade to swim up oceanfront which was the best. Common areas: I am not a huge fan of the lobby area with electric stairs making me feel I'm in a mall. When it gets hot, the buffet is brutal as there is no AC and it's sunken in the building getting no natural breeze and zero view. Most public bathrooms were clean. Splash pool was great and quiet. We were not harassed once for time share, we never go to the meetings or engage with butlers so perhaps that's the trick. Beach: Gorgeous sand, amazing service but brown water and loads of seaweed. They clean it up well but still not very inviting. The food was great and there are lots of options. We ate a the steak restaurant which was nice, the mexican was average and Japanese served everything cold and bland. The carribean had no lobster availalbe (5 star right) and I may have been lucky if I ate 10 shrimp during the whole trip. I don't come to the Carribean Sea to eat steak and onion soup! Where is the seafood?? Not here that's for sure. Room was beautiful, smelled horrible upon arrival. I asked for the small puck they put in your AC system and it smelled like over powering perfume for the night but after that it was fine. We were in building 9 in mangrove side and overlooking the ocean. First night was the best sleep, peace and quiet. After that, downhill. Turns out there is a wedding venue right next door, well get ready to listen to thumping beats til 4 am. So we changed rooms as soon as we could to a swim up. Did not win at the no room selection game that's for sure. I had to call twice at 530 pm to get our mini bar serviced as no one came and call for someone to come do a room service leftover dishes sweep after coming back from dinner a few times as the small racoon team had taken over the leftovers making a mess on first floor. You can hear peoples dishes moving in the hallway during the night, now you know why. The dishes will be left til morning if you don't call. I shouldn't have to do the hallway patrol, really For the above few negatives, we would most likely consider many other 5 stars before returning to this resort unfortunately.
Return visit - Overall great, with some exceptions
Third visit, overall, another great week except for a couple of areas below. Good: - Encore Pool was great. A big thank you to Daniel, Cesar, Manuel and Barman. Service was fantastic and they were always eager to please, including specialty drinks for kids. - Food is consistently good, don't require reservations and variety of options available - Fitness facility/staff are above average vs other resorts we have visited. Lots of cardio machines - Good variety of activities during the day - foam parties in the pools, aqua fit classes (Angelica was great). Aqua fit classes are better than local facilities in the Toronto area - Rooms were large and well maintained. Staff throughout the resort are very friendly Negative - Nighttime noise - Stayed in Building 9 on the beach. Music from on-site wedding receptions can be very loud if facing the pools and/or beach. Be wary if you have young children and plan to be asleep before 11 (resort curfew). Bigger issue (our biggest negative from the week) was excessive noise from off-site functions. There is a venue close to Building 9 (told by guest services is not affiliated with the resort), so the noise cannot be controlled. Our sleep was interrupted for three nights of our stay (between 1 and 3 am) - extremely disappointing as we were seeking a relaxing vacation. The noise was a big enough issue that we might not return to the resort - or might try to avoid Building 9. - Staff pushing the vacation club/membership can be pushy/aggressive.
Great resort, but...
Our family of four, two kids 3 & 9, stayed from Nov 9-16. We flew with sunwing, flight was delayed, so we arrived later than expected. Waited 30mins at the Cancun airport for our luggage to come out onto the carousel. We booked a diamond club room with ocean view with jacuzzi terrace. When we arrived at the hotel, we expected diamond club treatment, but just received regular check in process because we arrived so late that diamond club office was closed for the night. We ordered room service that night, took about 1hr. We ate 2am! We got a great room at the diamond club section with a view of the ocean and a rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi. The first day we hung around the family section. Weather could have been better, but we cannot control Mother Nature. The kids splash pad was alright. The slides were nice. The swim up bar was like any other swim up bar. Service at the kids area was not so good. When we stayed at the diamond club pool area, there are a lot more people there to hand out towels, set up your lounger with towels, and drink service. Plus your butler, generally, hangs around that area so if you need anything you just need to ask. Don’t expect to see the butlers that often, unless you contact them. I think they service a number of guests during the day. Food: We ate at Hunter the first night. Hunter was ok. Didn’t have much flavour. Ate at Zen the next night. Food was ok. Teppanyaki show was great. Taj was great. Food had great flavours. Agave was great too. Caribbean was good, but service was slow and they didn’t have rock lobster. Ate at Armadillo for lunch. Hit and miss for service. The first time was great. The second time we went the service was very slow, so slow that people didn’t bother staying for their main entree. Food was good though. Buffet was great. Had a mix of selection throughout breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Great made to order omelettes and eggs during breakfast. My go to was Ezekiel. Loved the fresh grilled mussels, fish and squid during lunch and dinner service. Scoops ice cream was great for specialty coffee and desserts. Overall, food was pretty good. Staff: Overall they all seem to provide great service. Special shout out to Chris and Irving, our butlers, for reservations, setting up our jacuzzi, late check out, and answering questions that we may have. They have a number of staff/concierge that just keeps asking you to sign up for either their spa or to listen to their speech for 1h30min everyday. I get that they want you to spend more $$, but we are there to relax and not to be constantly asked to go to these things. If we want to go to the spa we would go to the spa to inquire about it. Of all the resorts we’ve stayed at, this hotel is the only one where we are constantly asked to the point that we avoid certain parts of the resort just to avoid these people. They tend to be in certain parts of the hotel. Entertainment was great. They work hard to provide great entertainment to the guests staying here. Room: As mentioned above, we had a great room. Loved the double shower head. They both had great water pressure. USB ports to charge devices. However, it is starting to get a bit run down. The faucet to one of our sinks was falling apart and when used if you’re not careful it will spill over onto the counter. Notice grout missing from tiles in the shower. Wear on the counter. Placement of the jacuzzi inside the room was awkward as it was in the middle of the bathroom. They could have designed it better. Beach: The beach was nice when it was not raining. It rained for most of our stays. My youngest loved playing on the beach. White sand and some seaweed. More washes up as the day goes on. Water was brownish. Was hoping it would be clear blue, but it wasn’t. Overall: I would like to have given it 5 stars, but room was getting a bit dated with years of use and the jacuzzi in the middle of the bathroom was just awkward. There were a number of leaks in the hallway and in the main hotel. Just the constant asking about spa and membership is too much.
